Ubuntu Dapper Drake Released (Linux is now easy)
Today (yesterday for me but I'm in Australia) Dapper Drake was released. Ubuntu is a version of linux that a was founded by an extremely rich south african entrepreneur Mark ShuttleWorth (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canonical_Ltd). Basically they took the already very good free software outthere, extended from Debian's excellent package management system and just tied the whole thing together and polished it so it was one more or less coherent OS. It works very well and for something that is free its amazing how much cool stuff you can find there - you can spend hours just browsing the packages installing random cool shit and giving it a wiz.
That said - it can still be a bitch to install. On my laptop I ended up compiling 3 drivers. If you want to give it a go I'll monitor this thread and try to help out. Once you install you will get free Office, Net, Instant Messenger, Games, etc. etc. Check it out at http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop (I'm not personally involved in Ubuntu project) |

Ubuntu has really become my favorite distro, and Dapper is awesome.
Check out Automatix or Easy Ubuntu. Both are graphical programs to Download and install all the extra stuff you'll want (but can't be included in the distro due to licensing issues). Movie/Music codecs, flash plugin, and more. Very nice. Very handy. |

Thanks for the heads up. I'm mostly a Windows guy but need a linux distro every once and a while, and Ubuntu is great. I'm installing the update to Dapper, and I'm going to grab Automatix too. Thanks again.

I'm playing with ubuntu 6.06 persistent live cd and I'm trying to install my printer. I've downloaded the drivers and installed them. When I go to add the printer, I see it there, choose Canon, choose the model, but when I go to install the driver i get "Unable to write to /usr/share/ppd/custom/canonip4200.ppd because Permission denied". I've tried going to http://localhost:631/admin/, but it tells me "413 Request Entity Too Large". Any ideas what I should try next?
The printer is a Canon Pixma ip4200. Thanks in advance.

While I've never touched a Linux distro of any kind, it warms my heart to know that there's some good coming out of this country.
Please continue regular tech-talk.
