Stuttering Onboard Sound
Just what the title says. When using onboard sound (my option right now) on my eVGA SLI motherboard, I get sound stutters. I have the latest driver from their website for the onboard sound (Realtek AC '97 or something similar). I check for IRQ conflicts or something like that and could get nothing. Also, I don't need to be doing anything CPU intensive to get the stuttering. Even as I now type this post (while using less than 5% CPU), I get an occasional stutter.
The stutters last only a second or so, but it's rather annoying and seemingly random. That is, there is no apparent connection to a specific program causing it. If it matters, the music is mp3 format being played through Winamp. Any help is appreciated. |

That's probably your best bet then.
I had a mobo with a similar setup (on-board sound...ac'97) and I couldn't use the newest drivers. No stuttering, but there was a definite steady crackling that just wouldn't go away. I had to uninstall the new drivers and 'let' Windows reinstall the default drivers to get rid of it.

Could be a driver mismatch or problematic IRQ sharing.
Was the audio driver, or any other motherboard related code, taken from a source other than the motherboard manufacturer? Everything else up to date, including BIOS? They can often be developed and tested as matched groups outside of which bad things pop up. Back to the BIOS... are you using ACPI? Disable Plug & Play OS. Or, enable plug & play OS but disable ACPI. If no joy, load safe defaults and try again.

Well, I uninstalled/reinstalled with newest drivers (from eVGA directly) and I've not noticed the stuttering sense. cyrnel, I don't think it was an IRQ sharing problem as I checked for any conflicts under Device Manager and found none. BIOS isn't the latest, but the latest only adds the option to remove the splash screen during POST so you can see what's going on. Looks like the problem is fixed for now.
