Could be a driver mismatch or problematic IRQ sharing.
Was the audio driver, or any other motherboard related code, taken from a source other than the motherboard manufacturer? Everything else up to date, including BIOS? They can often be developed and tested as matched groups outside of which bad things pop up.
Back to the BIOS... are you using ACPI? Disable Plug & Play OS. Or, enable plug & play OS but disable ACPI. If no joy, load safe defaults and try again.
