Stuck on a certain page in multi-page threads
Today I'm noticing some very strange behavior on multi-page threads.
Take for instance a 3-page thread. I click the "last page" link (or the "3") and I get page two. I click the next-page link at the top or bottom of the page, and I get page... two. I click the "3" in the page link list at the top or bottom of the page... I get page... two. Nothing I can do will advance me to page three. On very long threads, I'm sticking on a page somewhere in the middle. No clicking links makes any difference. I can't even rewrite the URL to contain a later page number--I hit that page, and redirect to my page I'm stuck on. I've never seen this behavior before. It's very odd. EDIT: A bit more research about this. I went to the Tilted Nonsense thread "Longest Thread Ever" and clicked the "last page" link from the topic list. I got page 533, which is nowhere NEAR the end of that thread (the posts on that page were from 2008). I can click the page number links BACK--getting to 532 was fine. But any link to a page AFTER 533 put me ON 533. My webdev-senses are tingling about some mis-handling of the "last viewed page" feature. It's definitely redirecting me from later pages back to a specific page in the thread. Last edited by ratbastid; 02-28-2010 at 11:42 AM.. |

"View new posts" broken
OK, it may not be broken for everyone. WK and Amonkie couldn't reproduce this when I brought it up in Chat. But, here's my problem...
I start my browsing by visiting the New Posts page. On a long thread, I hit the "Go to first new post" button. Instead of seeing a post from Saturday morning or later (I was on late Friday night), I'm at some arbitrary post in the past, at the top of that page. For example, selecting the four most recent long threads: Erotic Images that make you go...WOW - NSFW: 12/28/09 Make Love Not War Images (NSFW): 2/11/10 Pointless Announcements: 12/29/09 New Joss Whedon Show: Dollhouse: 5/15/2009 Worse, I can't get past that page on any of the threads. Hitting the 'next page' button leaves me on the current page. Hand-editing the URL to increase the page count also leaves me on the same page. I even tried posting a new entry in the Pointless thread, and I can't see what I entered and I'm stuck on the same page as before. I'm using Google Chrome Beta on Mac OS X 10.6.2. I tried using Safari and Firefox and had identical results. I deleted my TFP cookies to no avail. Is this happening to anyone else? Any hints on what may have gone wrong for me?

It has to do with a new version of VBSEO I had to install. I'm still ironing out the configuration. Can you please post the exact link that you are using? I need to read it to see how it's parsing.

No joy. I clicked on http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/tilted-...-ever-711.html (which was the link behind the "last page" link from the title list in Tilted Nonsense)
I end up on: http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/tilted-...-ever-533.html That's pretty much exactly the format of the thing. If I go up to the "533" part of that link and put in any number higher than "533", I end up on longest-thread-ever-533.html. Red, do you get stuck on the same page of that thread that I do? |

It's interesting that I'm always at the top of the page, instead of a post midway down the thread.

In the meantime, you can change your posts per page to 100 to reduce the impact of this bug

Yeah, we've got some issues that we're working on right now. If you go into your user cp and change the number of posts displayed per page to 100, that should help (but I'm not sure if it will totally fix it). I'm also merging this with an existing thread on the issue in Tilted Support, so look for updates there

Yeah, TFP-EZ is technically a separate forum now, so changes made to one do not affect the other.

Please let me know if this is still an issue. I cannot replicate the issue nor can the support guy helping me.
I did however roll back a version so let's see if that helps.

The new posts view has also been screwed up ever since this issue started to show up.
As for the page issue, it seems as though the software was confused about how many pages there were, not that people weren't able to access all the pages. I changed my posts per page to the forum default and I'm no longer seeing this issue. In fact, when I go to the last page of the threads listed as examples here, I'm taken to the page that was supposedly the mistake page. So, it seems that the later pages people were attempting to reach just plain didn't exist in the first place.

Yep, resolved for me too.
Smeth, I don't think it was the reported number of pages that was in error, because the latest posts I could get to in some VERY active threads were dated 2008. I KNOW there were posts after that, I just couldn't get to the page that contained them. |

sorry to bother you. but do I have to clear my cache to see these changes? when I reply to a thread, or start a new one, I don't see them in the New Posts. until someone else replies after me.

I'm seeing this as well. I think New Posts excludes any thread you have finished, and since you posted, it figures you read it. It's a bit disconcerting, but I could get used to it.

Unfortunately the new posts issue hasn't been worked out yet. What was fixed is the ability to access the last page in multi-page threads.

Actually, I think I'm seeing something more interesting with New Posts.
Previously, if I stopped browsing at 3 pm, and came back an hour later, new New Posts would go back to 3 pm only. Now, it seems that New Posts go back a long time, and if I hit the New Post button on an old thread that I haven't been following, it puts me back to 2/21, which I'm guessing is the "beginning of time" for the new functionality. If that's true, I love it. I get that paranoia if I've been offline for too long, because I won't have time to catch up on all of the threads. This way, my "last read" place seems to be bookmarked in all threads. I can't imagine what sort of impact that has on the database. Or I'm just hallucinating.
