Why have the Jets signed Jay Fielder?

ummm... its hard to qualify how I feel. why? for what purpose? I mean... why? Did anyone think maybe a WIDE OUT WOULD BE MORE USEFUL? Even if they are losing or have lost Quincey Carter, Bollinger is a good no 2... I just dont understand the logic behind this signing.

Jay Fielder is not as bad as everyone thinks, I don't have the stats on hand but he is allright.

The logic behind this move, if Pennnington goes down (or if he isn't properly healed from his rotator cuff surgery by opening day) the Jets won't be caught with their pants down and there won't be a repeat of the 2003 season.

Now can someone explain to me why Washington would trade Coles for an inferior reciever and take a massive cap hit in the process causing them to lose Fred Smoot ?

Yeah, Jay isn't a bad quarterback, it's just that he's made some bad decisions and has alot of interceptions under his belt because of it. Still, he has alot of passing yards despite all the interceptions.

No, if you're a Dolphin fan or know anything about the AFC East, he is as bad as you think. He had the benefit of a great defense, and only won one playoff game. Then he got a great running back, and didn't make the playoffs.

He is a direct cause of what went wrong. Not once did he take the team on his back and win when they needed him to, except maybe that game in 2002 (?) against Oakland, where he dove in with 5 seconds left. He is garbage as a starter, and will throw more touchdowns to the other team than to yours.

He'd be a decent backup though. He's very good at getting the play in there.

The Jets aren't going to put any big money into a wideout, considering they have Coles back and Justin McCareins as the other starting wideout. Fiedler didn't cost big money, and apparently, they didn't feel comfortable with their QB depth.

To add to the illogical thinking, why are they looking to trade Gardner too? Perhaps they enjoyed having a piss-poor pass offense.

I guess they arent resigning Quincey... but this makes no sense. this ist what the team needs. Bollinger is fine at no 2. They need a high profile wide out, not a failed QB from the worst offense in the NFL last year as a back up....

this is his all-time stats...not good...but not that horrible either. i would say he is below average though as his td-int ratio shows. anytime a qb throws as much int's as td's, it's not neccessarily a good sign. as far as bollinger, yes, he was fine for 2nd.
1704 for 1000 58.7 pct. 11737 yards for 68 TD's 66 INT's 76.9 rating

Yeah, I'm not sure why they were that interested either. I've heard he's from around the area, but I really don't feel like he's a great quarterback. I was happy that they DID sign him though, since that means the team I root for (the Bears) weren't going to sign him Who knows? Maybe the change of scenery will be good for him, but I really didn't want him in Chicago, just have never been impressed with him.

He's definitely better than Rich Gannon.

Oh man, Jay Fiedler??

I guess it's not really a downgrade from Quincy Carter, since he doesn't have character issues or drug problems...but come on, has anyone in Jets managment since him play? I bet Herman Edwards didn't ask for him...Chad better not get hurt this year, or he'll be on the hot seat.

As someone mentioned, in Miami he had a solid defense and Ricky Williams, but couldn't do squat. Then again, he had Dave Wannstedt as his coach...

jay fiedler isn't a bad quarterback.

the reason the dolphins suck is because of the coaching and who ever calls the plays for offense.

I'm surpised that no one has mentioned Fiedler's incredibly gigantic ears. Rumor has it he doesn't need to wear an earpiece because he can hear the plays all the way from the press box. To answer someone's question, I heard he grew up on Long Island. Also glad he didn't end up here in Chicago, but anything's better than last year's Jonathan Quinn fiasco...

Hmmm that would explain a few things.

Dolphins Offensive Co-ordinator yelling out of the window of his box:OK Jay listen up, we are going to run Orange Posts on 2. Be sure to watch for the DB on the left he will be cheating up,if he does watch for the tightend under neath and throw it to him.

Strange, I'm very impressed to see that a Brit has taken an interest in 'American Football.' How did you get into it?

As a Dolphin fan I can tell you Jay sucks. He is another Chad Pennington just not quite as good. No arm but good accuracy. He wasn't a good fit for the Dolphin organization following in the foot steps of Dan Marino. Dolphins went from having a high flying passing attack to 10 yard drops. Not that Jay Feely is any better though. And now Gus. God help us this year.

hahaha!

I guess there are teams with worse no 2's coming into the new season, but I really think they should be moving to progress Bollinger. I dont see any value in keeping Bollinger if he is going to stay no 3 another season, they should let him go and have a go somewhere else if they cant promote him, and bring in a no 3 they think IS a prospect. The Jets have one of the best O lines in the league, and a consistent and taleneted running back, they've strengthened their receivers and have a good D... I really think they are close to stepping up from a team that makes the play off's to a play off threat... hopefully their offensive play calling will improve now... and while Chad doesnt have a cannon arm, I think he disproved some of the "no arm strength" arguments last season... he can throw a deep ball when he needs to although it isnt his strength, he is mobile, is a leader with a lot of heart, an accurate passer in a 25 yeard range... he is one of the top 10 QB's in the league imo.

I still think they need SOMEONE to be a really big impact player, which sounds funny since Martin won the rushing title last season, but Martin is just so consistent and strong, but he isnt necessarily a big time playmaker, and Santana Moss hasnt progressed as he should have done... but the guy they drafted no 1 last seasons is gonna be good I think.

It used to be on TV in the UK in the late 80's and I got into it then... my dad was a Bears fan... and I just picked the Jets cos I liked some NY rappers.

Ive really followed it the last 3/4 years though... but it can be hard to keep up to date in the UK, cos Football gets ZERO coverage here other than maybe a mention for the superbowl... I didnt even hear the Jets got Coles back until I saw it in this thread...!!!! thats a massive boost for the organisation though... although I still think he isnt the receiver they really need.... his speed makes him a genuine deep threat and he is a big time player, but I still think a better fit with Pennignton's strengths would be a "big" receiver.

But despite all his talent, Moss hasnt fulfilled, and Coles is definitely an upgrade. Moss was basically promoted to do Coles' job on the Jets offense and failed to... so its a very good trade for them.
