TFP Week One NFL Playoffs Tournament Winners

Since the thread is closed, and bundy and absorbentishe haven't posted, Congratulations to first round winners sion and Rogue49. For the rest of us, let's see how the games go. Good luck.

(For those who will question it, Rogue49 did everything possible to contact all of the players.)

After discussing it with sion, absorbentishe is being allowed back into the mix. Since rogue49 received the PM before the start of the first game, an exception has been made. Good luck to both sion and absorbentishe.

BonesCPA

Ps. Regardless of the results of their match up, I am giving sion the Sportsmanship Award for being cool about the situation. That's what the TFP is about (IMO).

After Saturday's games:

rogue49 has a bye and proceeds to the second round.

crfpilot leads crewsor 2-0, and since their Sunday picks are the same, has won the first round.

minx leads cheezhead 2-1, and since their Sunday picks are the same, has won the first round.

The following match ups need Sunday games to decide winners:
present_future leads grumpyolddude 2-1. (AFC game and potential tiebraker to decide.)
steelerz and AL9045 are tied 1-1. (NFC game decides.)
Spartak and djstestudo are tied 1-1. (AFC game decides.)
sion and absorbentishe are tied 2-2. (Tiebraker decides.)
BonesCPA and GOV135 are tied 2-2. (Tiebraker decides.)

Wow!
Great games...2 blowouts and 2 nailbiters.
The NFL doesn't get any better

We had a couple of nailbiters too.
Too bad Bundy didn't show, I would have rather won the hard way.
It's more fun that way.

Congrats to the winners.
And a big thank you to BonesCPA for the work.

I cede my victory to BonesCPA, because:
1. We both got all four, and he posted before me.
2. He was astute enough to get two out of the three tiebreakers correct.
3. I was already a weekly winner during the regular season.
4. I've had alot of life stuff that has kept me away from TFP and I'm not 100% sure I'll be able to keep up each week.

So, BonesCPA, you are moving on. I will be following your entry thoughout the playoffs, good luck, I hope you make it to the top!

in fairness to steelerz, the remaining players should all weigh in on gov135's decision to bow out and cede his victory to BonesCPA, with a majority rule deciding the issue. personally, I have no problem with it, but by strict interpretation of general tournament rules, steelerz would normally get a bye next week as a result of his/her competitor failing to show up (so to speak). or alternately, we could leave the decision up to steelerz, as it was done with me and absorbentishe.

as I said, I favor allowing BonesCPA to move on, in keeping with the TFP spirit of good gamesmanship, as well as for the reasons gov135 mentioned.

what say ye, TFP NFLers?

-------------

also, I think we need to alter the tiebreaker format or set an emergency 4th tiebreaker, as we've seen with this weekends games that the 3rd one leaves the possibility of a tie, even if the two competitors chose different teams. the need for another breaker will become readily apparent as the #of teams dwindles. consider the super bowl, where there will be only two teams left. in that situation there will only be three possible outcomes for the two players that are left.

1-1 tie, go to breakers, which may or may not resolve the decision
1-0 > we have a winner
0-0 tie, go to breakers, which may or may not resolve the decision

as you can see, in 2/3 of the possible outcomes, the tiebreakers WILL come into play. however, logic suggests that most players will pick the same team to win as they will the highest scorer, which means there is a high likelihood that the #2 & 3 breakers will be irrelevant, should they come into play.

there are several ways to go:

1. reverse the order of the tiebreakers: 1st=lowest (or highest) scoring team. 2nd=highest (or lowest) scoring team. 3rd=total points scored. I think this would be likely to minimize the chances of a tie after all three breakers have been checked.

2. select a 4th breaker, such as total number of TDs scored, or total # of FGs, or total interceptions or some such.

3. eliminate one of the existing breakers and replace it with another, then change the order.

I favor option 3 with the order going like this:
1= highest scoring team
2= total # of FGs scored by all teams
3= total points scored by all teams

as you can see, with each progressive breaker, the number of possible correct outcomes increases, which is as it should be, so that there is a progressively smaller and smaller chance of two players matching. in the case of the SB, if player A & player B both chose the correct winner, they will tie, and TB1 will be irrelevant. TB2 will have an outcome most likely between 0 and 6 (or even as high as 10 - though I really doubt either team will make more than 3 FGs). if necessary, TB3 could have an outcome anywhere from 2 to 100, though anything over 60 will HIGHLY unlikely.

finally, worst case scenario we still have a tie, then I suggest a virtual coin toss, with the higher seeded player making the call and the "tossing" to be done Halx or one of the other moderators.

Personally, I prefer just reversing the order of the current tiebreakers.

Second, I vote to allow gov's decision.
I prefer more competition, it's more fun that way.

And thank you very much for the chart, Sion
This makes things very clear.

I have no problem at all with gov's decision either.

As far as the tiebreakers.....I think my head hurts from reading all that Sion! A reversal would probably be the best way to work around the problem.

Great chart, thanks!

reversing the order will probably not result in a tie, but it is conceivable. thats the only reason I brought up the other suggestions.

in any case, as before, whatever the majority decide is fine with me. if the SB winner did come down to a tie on all breakers and was decided by a coin toss, wouldnt that just be too TFP?

As far as the tiebreakers go, I agree a change needs to be made. I think the points first doesn't work as well since we are talking head to head, not a group of people. Therefore, I agree with the thought on changing the order. My thought is that we stick with the three tiebreakers for one more week since there are still eight teams in the mix. The order would be most points, least points, and then total points of all games. I will start thinking through the future tiebreakers during this week for the final two weeks at let everyone know later.

And don't forget, there is still a non-tournament version of the pool going on, so you can stay involved even if you are going for the "TFP Cup".

He's quoting only the wins of each person, not the losses.
So if each person picked 4 then it's a 4-4 tie.
and so on...

So you picked 3 wins,
and crewsor picked 1
You win.
