he absolutely did. Machida looked awesome tonight.

evilbeefchan 02-01-2009 01:55 AM

Man, that was a great night of fights (except for the Karo one). I was very surprised with Jones, especially since he's only 21! Jackson and GSP worked out a great strategy, breaking Penn's spirit early, overwork his neck and shoulder so he can't fire off a punch, and control the rest of the fight. Guida and Diaz was a fantastic opening fight, and I would love to see a rematch, especially if it's a 5 rounder. Silva played perfectly into Machida's style, which made for a very entertaining fight (and awesome KO).

Radio Monk33 02-01-2009 02:30 AM

Yeah, that Kim fight was bs...what to say..

The first 2 fights were kind of slow, abit too much grappling. GG Machida...nice to see some aggressiveness.

The GSP-BJ fight wasn't very entertaining imho. A little too one-sided to get people riled up.

m0rpheus 02-01-2009 09:57 AM

Pre-card
So got Fitch right but I thought he'd finish it. 1-0
Looks like Tavares' cold streak comes to an end. 1-1
I picked Wilson because I didn't know Howard at all. 1-2
Got O'Brian. Thought he'd finish it too. 2-2
Cramer by split, just as I thought. 3-2

Main Card
Nate Diaz vs. Clay Guida - Way to go Clay. I'm always happy to be wrong when I pick Clay to lose. 3-3

Karo Parisyan vs. Dong Hyun Kim - I'm right, but I really thought Kim deserved the decision more than Parisyan. 3-4

Stephan Bonnar vs. Jon Jones - Wow Jones looked awesome until he gassed. Then again he's only 21 with some better cardio he could be fantastic. 3-5

Lyoto Machida vs. Thiago Silva - Wow. Machida won by KO??? WTF??? I'm shocked to say that I was actually entertained by a Machida fight. 4-5

Welterweight Championship bout: Georges St-Pierre vs. B.J. Penn - Wow again. I picked GSP but I had no idea that he would dominate BJ like that. At the end of the fight BJ had done so little to GSP that it looked like Georges could have taken another fight next weekend. Great win for GSP. 5-5

Prophecy 02-04-2009 09:13 PM

Did GSP cheat?

It seems BJ Penn and his lawyers are calling GSP out over his use of grease during the fight. I haven't seen the fight yet, but if GSP did use grease that certainly tarnishes his victory. If the complaint is found to be legit, do you guys think we'll see another match?

Penn wants St. Pierre investigated - Sportsnet.ca

Quote:

B.J. Penn says Georges St. Pierre didn’t fight fair with his use of Vaseline and has asked the Nevada State Athletic Commission to review their Jan. 31 title fight.

In a letter sent to the commission dated Feb. 3, Penn is arguing that St. Pierre's use of Vaseline on his body at UFC 94 negatively affected Penn's ability to compete with the Canadian.

"This illegal situation made it impossible for Mr. Penn to defend himself and unfairly exposed Mr. Penn to GSP's `ground and pound' strategy which Mr. Penn extensively trained for and was fully prepared to perform against," Penn's lawyer, Raffi A. Nahabedian, wrote.

Penn's lawyer stated the letter is not a formal complaint, but it is asking for a "comprehensive investigation and review of the activities involving and relating to Georges St. Pierre prior to and during the bout."

Penn claims the Vaseline neutralized Penn's Brazilian jiu-jitsu skills while exposing him to a "life-threatening and career-ending environment: an environment that the Commission was formed to protect against."

The Nevada State Athletic Commission said St. Pierre will be given a chance to respond.

Following the fight, UFC president Dana White was quoted as saying the commission was "flipping out," as they noticed one of St-Pierre's cornermen rubbing Vaseline on his back in between rounds.

"The guys from the athletic commission went up there and started screaming at them, knocked the Vaseline and kicked the Vaseline out of the Octagon," White said. "Some Vaseline on a guy's back didn't change the outcome of that fight, but you don't do it."

St. Pierre's trainers have dismissed allegations of wrongdoing, saying any transfer of Vaseline was accidental when one of the cornermen rubbed his back as part of an energy/breathing exercise between rounds.

The commission ordered St. Pierre be wiped down after the second and third round. The Canadian won after the fourth round when the bout was stopped on the advice of the ring physician. Penn's corner concurred.

"All Mr. Penn wanted to have on Jan. 31 is a fair and just bout and he continues to seek a fair and just encounter with Georges St. Pierre," the letter concludes.

evilbeefchan 02-05-2009 07:01 PM

Hmm, hard to say. The only time it would have made a difference was when it was taken to the ground and Penn went for a high guard but never got a grip. Whether this was from Vaseline residue or from GSP just working out of position, we'll never know.

m0rpheus 02-05-2009 08:57 PM

So is BJ ever going to defend the lightweight belt then?

Paq 02-05-2009 10:11 PM

yea, his next fight is against Kenny florian and should be aaaaamazing. Kenflo is one of the hardest working and intelligent fighters in the UFC and he has brruuuuutal elbows and a great submission game..

on the other hand, anyone stopping bjpenn at 155 has to be amazing.

m0rpheus 02-10-2009 11:13 PM

I know Kenflo is supposed to be up next. I more meant the fact that BJ hasn't defended the belt since last May and if BJ does actually want a rematch against GSP will he defend the belt first seeing as he won it last January and only defended it once in 2008. Since GSP is supposed to be fighting Alves (in July according to Wikipedia but take that for what it's worth) hopefully BJ will defend the Lightweight belt at least once more before a GSP rematch.

Paq 02-10-2009 11:18 PM

im gonna state it here and now..i am 99% sure there will not be a gsp/penn rematch anytime soon..by soon, i mean before 2010 or 2011. ie, if they do it, ti will be when they are both past their prime or aren't champs anymore

evilbeefchan 02-21-2009 12:55 AM

UFC 95 Diego Sanchez vs. Joe Stevenson, it's gonna be a tough pick. Joe is coming off a loss to Kenny Florian, while Diego is coming off back to back wins and making his debut at lightweight. Both fighters have great ground games, and both have improved their striking. Diego stands 3 inches taller than Joe, and may end up weighing more by fight time. Conditioning shouldn't be a factor, but I think the combo of weight cut and time difference will effect Diego in some way. I'm taking Joe by decision.

Paq 02-21-2009 05:52 AM

i'm kinda conflicted on diego/joe daddy...i like both, i think both are pretty amazing, both are cutting lot of weight regularly (joe is about 185-190 on a normal day, diego is/was about the same but looked insanely ripped during the weigh ins). I don't really have an opinion on how either could win, but i'm thinking diego pulls it out.

i am shocked by the people who are on the undercard vs the main card, just seems backwards or they are using this ppv to promote their younger fighters

Paq 02-21-2009 08:39 PM

well, i'm not putting up a spoiler yet, but i think every match was televised...gracious.

evilbeefchan 02-22-2009 01:27 AM

Yea, the 3 hours felt much longer. Good night of fights, though.

Not Right Now 02-23-2009 03:35 AM

great night of fights. I just wish i had been more excited for it beforehand.

Strange Famous 03-15-2009 03:42 PM

I saw a Kimbo Slice fight on youtube the other day (when I was searching for something else)

It was really a joke, he was fighting a guy who almost fell over tryng to get away from Slice, hit him with a soft jab by accident while trying to push himself away, Slice seemed to slip over, the other guy missed several times with clumsy right hands while Slice was down on his back - and the ref called it off.

Slice got back up and clearly wasnt much hurt but he had a little mouse under one eye.

I mean, I know this is probably a very bad fight and not representative... but it is an issue, if you dont have a clear rule and the ref just stops the fight when he thinks the other guy is hurt you must get terrible decisions like this. The ref obviously had a bad angle and just saw the guy swinging in right hands and couldnt see that not a single one landed, so he stopped it, when all it was was a slip by Slice.

---

Oh, and is it true David Tua is going to have a go at MMA? I have no idea if he'd be much use at wrestling, but he his left is one of the most dangerous weapons Ive ever seen in a ring.

Paq 03-15-2009 03:57 PM

that was kimbo vs seth and the actual fight was pretty much kimbo chasing seth, seth kicked kimbo which doubled him over, then starting punching, kimbo goes down, seth keeps punching and kimbo doesnt' defend it. the ref calls off matches if someone taps out, is knocked out or does not intelligently defend himself.

Strange Famous 03-15-2009 04:06 PM

But in fairness the guy with pink hair didnt land a single clean shot other than a single jab that had no power behind it. He jumped on Kimbo when he slipped and was swinging wildly, but he didnt tag him after the first jab.

I suppose the rules are the rules, but it seems a bit weak for a fight to end in 20 seconds when neither guy has been hurt.

I think the ref would admit he made a mistake. But he has to make a split second call, and someone's life could be at stake if he allows a guy who really is out to be hit again and again when he is down...

Paq 03-15-2009 04:30 PM

he was connecting and hitting pretty hard, even kimbo said that during post fight interviews. He got caught, went down, didn't continue fighting.

Either way, it's not a great match on which to judge mma bouts and kimbo was a travesty.

Strange Famous 03-15-2009 04:37 PM

As I understand, Kimbo was a street fighter. Fighting in the ring, whatever the rules are, is a bit different. I know of legends of bare knuckle boxing also (Roy Shaw, Lenny McLean, etc) who wouldnt last two rounds in a ring with someone like Lennox Lewis.

So what fights would you recomend I check to see the best of MMA?

Anything that wasn't produced by EliteXC. That organization was god awful. Watch some classic Pride or UFC or WEC or even Affliction fights.

My favorite fights off the top of my head:
BJ Penn vs Sean Sherk - Full Fight Video UFC 84

Matt Hughes vs. B J Penn 2 Fight Video UFC 63 | MMATKO Mixed Martial Arts Videos, MMA Videos, UFC Videos
Fight starts at the 14:30 minute mark. A great back and forth for the first 2 rounds, BJ overexerts himself in the 2nd and injures his ribs.

Classic: Matt Hughes Vs Frank Trigg UFC 52 fight Video
Speaking of bad reffing, Mario Yamasaki misses the accidental knee to the groin, but this is one of the fights that had me jumping out my seat.

I tried to find the Dan Henderson vs. Anderson Silva fight, but the one I had was incomplete.

Not Right Now 03-15-2009 11:26 PM

just a highlight, but one of the better ones I've seen.

Penn vs Florian is set for UFC 101 in Philly. Can't wait to be done with this "scandal," and focusing on exciting fights.

m0rpheus 03-30-2009 10:53 AM

I wish BJ would just shut the fuck up and move on. I used to be a fan of both GSP and Penn's but now I'm just sick of Penn. It would have been one thing if a) Penn didn't get dominated by GSP and b) Penn had filed the inquiry and let the commishion look into it. But Penn has been going on like a fucking nutcase about what GSP did to win, including his diet making him sweat extra slick.
Seriously I`m just sick of Penn now and I kinda hope Florian kicks BJ's ass because you know BJ is gunning for another shot at GSP and you know Dana will give it to him because of the whole Greasegate thing. At least if Florian beats Penn it only interferes with one weight class.

Not Right Now 04-01-2009 03:16 PM

Fight not tonight, Joe Rogan is twittering prelim results and i'm 5-0 right now.

Here's a few.

CroCop vs Nogueira - Note this was in PRIDE over in Japan which used different rules than the UFC does (like kicking in the head when the other guy is down)

---------- Post added at 08:11 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:56 PM ----------

Fedor vs CroCop from PRIDE this one goes LOOOOOOONG. Although it does show one of the things I prefer about the cage of the UFC vs the ropes of Pride and Affliction where the fight is stopped and has to be resumed when CroCop goes under the ropes in the third clip while on the ground.

Fedor vs Arlovski

Watching Kimbo stuff is really watching the worst of MMA. Kimbo only ever had a chance against purely striking guys. If they had put him against anyone with a decent ground game or a striker with real talent then EliteXC would lose their big draw, the internet sensation Kimbo, and they knew it.

I've liked diaz for a while, but i did not think he was really 'that' good...

but he just pwned frank shamrock...entire match. That was about as much of an unexpected domination as Mir vs Nog.

i was also shocked by the gracious ending. Neither fighter is really known for not trashtalking after the fact.

m0rpheus 04-21-2009 04:02 AM

Man what the hell was up with Spider this weekend?

Paq 04-21-2009 06:30 AM

I'm remembering the spider vs hendo...vs leben...vs marquardt, vs franklin..twice....

i really thought he was just farking around for a few rounds and would just turn it on in the later ones just bc he could......

but then.....

and i'm watching again and trying to figure out if it was silva, leites or just a bad style matchup. I think silva fought the 'smart' fight and fought to not lose, but in the interest of entertainment, he he probably should have just gone down and pounded out a win.

This only hurts worse bc the last two silva fights have been blah

Glory's Sun 04-21-2009 07:02 AM

This past UFC ppv was shit.

one of the most boring cards I have ever seen.

and Chuck just needs to retire.
