What sports moves did you copy when you were a kid?

I remember trying to do everything like the pros when I was a kid. I tried plunging my hands into buckets of rice like Steve Carlton for hand strength, I swung a heavy metal bar like a bat just like Steve Garvey- there was a Cincinnati Red (on the big red machine) who used to pump his elbow up and down a zillion times before the pitch that I used to copy.

I shot from outside with the behind the head shot of Jamal Wilkes (Silk), I had Kareem's sky hook and I used to do a mean George "Ice Man" Gervin finger roll when I made layups.

Who did you used to copy. Maybe I've forgot some signature moves that I need to bring back to my Adult Rec League games.

i believe that Reds player name is Joe Morgan. he played 2nd base and is now one of ESPNs better baseball announcers. (no slight against the others, i just really like Joe's down to earth-ness) for a while i wanted to be johnny bench from the same team. my childhood dog's name was benchly. and i always wore my hat backwards. even though i played 2nd base. pretty weak.

i thought every kid on the planet played basketball with his tongue out a la MJ. am i wrong on this one?

and did no one else do the michael cooper socks? j/k.

how could i forget... Dave Parker's (most notably with the Pirates, but also with the A's and the Reds i think) circling the bat before he swings... like a cobra before it strikes. that one was a staple of backyard baseball.

Sorry, I find Joe Morgan to be an arrogant arse. I think mainly due to his HoF eliteness. Now that he is in, NO ONE is worthy after that. But I digress............





I used to practice turnaround fadaway jumpers for hours......I wanted to be like Mike. I also play a lot of sandlot tackle football (sans pads ) and love the running style of guys like Mike Alstott and Jerome Bettis..........don't make em miss, just run em the &*(% over.

Hmmmmm..... I copied Mickey Mantle's smoking, Alex Karras' drinking and Denny McLain's gambling.

Seriously, though, my childhood sports hero was Al Kaline, who patrolled right field at Tiger Stadium for 20+ years with the ultimate in grace, technique and integrity. I tried like the devil to copy his smooth batting stroke and deadly accurate throwing style, with dubious results.

When playing baseball, we would mess around and do the pre-swing waggle like Gary Sheffield (he has been around since '88).

We all tried the Jordan fade away jumper, but for some reason, we couldn't quite match the elevation he had on his version.

I can't quite think of anything particular for football, but when being quarterback, I remember shouting out "Blue 32, Blue 32, set, hut!" like Scott Bakula from Necessary Roughness.

I always tried to hit guys hard enough at their benches to throw them over... I don't know who did this first but the most recent was Robin Reghr, I was personally at that game too. I suppose I tried to do the Paul Henderson goal, that was spectacular.

my friends and I used to wrestle in a home made ring all the time until I was put in a full nelson by someone who had the intent to hurt me and ripped apart my pectoral muscle all to hell.

When I was younger I was BIG into tennis and emulated Jimmy Connors big time. I had the wooden Jimmy Connors racquet, later replaced by the aluminum T2000.

In baseball as a hitter I was a cross between Pete Rose, on the base paths and Mike (The Human Rain Delay) Hargrove, in the batter's box, as a 3rd baseman I was Petey all the way and as a pitcher I tried to be be Tom Seaver.

Any other sport when I was a kid I didn't pay attention to and just played as me.

Today though as I swing a golf club and putt I try very hard to play like my favorite golfer of all time...... the great Payne Stewart..... RIP.

I still do the Connors pumps and jive when I play tennis.

As for Golf man, after I hit a shot that is better than sex I'll take my cap off and wave it around and and bow..... then because of my cockiness I'll fucking hit shit for the next 2 holes.

Every now and then I say "fuck Payne" and just do the John Daly ...... grip her and rip her...

Ahhhhh golf when the game is going good it is sooooo much better than sex..... it is the greatest feeling on Earth to have that perfect drive down a 500+ par 5 landing dead center of the fairway with a perfect view of the pin or hitting that 30 foot putt for a birdie......

In order to do the skyhook correctly you actually have to be shooting down at the net. This is achieved by using an indoor hang from the door nerf basketball set.

When I was a kid/teen I could play indoor nerf by myself for hours. I would dunk, skyhook, sit and shoot, bounce it off the wall, ceiling etc... I would pretend there was 5 seconds left, I would see how many shots in a row I could make.

Then a friend would come over and we would have heated games of horse and then after the loser got pissed we would have a game of warball with anything goes try and make a shot. You basically had to kill the guy and then make sure you dunked it so his zombie spirit didn't reject you at the last minute.

ps: even though I'm fairly young I still hate metal/composite tennis racquets and will break out the wood racquets for a game with my brother.

Also- in backyard wrestling I would ALWAYS ask for the five count just like the greatest wrestler of all time King Kong Bundy.

Not very long ago I played kitchen nerf b-ball with my dad. He'd always bust out the skyhook, but mine was always a sick fadeaway jumper .. that usually hit the ceiling

I'm still pretty young, and I've got a younger brother who I play sports with. One of the little neighbors who we played with had a stance that looked exactly like Junior's. Here was this goofy little white boy with glasses and he had a perfect replica. Not only did he have the arms right, the follow through was perfect.

Lately I've actually tried a few Doug Flutie drop kicks out of inspiration. I tried to teach my brother but that didn't work too well. I can't say much ... my drop kicks suck.

I know these are old skool but.....

Anybody remember Bobby Tolan???.....he held his bat straight up. We loved to copy that one.

How about Richie Hebner of the Pirates??? He used to crouch over and pull up his shirt at the shoulders.

And definitely Bjorn Borg's wicked topspin forehand. Kevin McHale's look right and drop step with the left was a classic too.
