Like many others here I use a Mach 3 and shaving gel and I've only had a slight nick once early on. Always be sure your razor is good and sharp. Dull razors increase the likelihood of nicks.

I shave my balls , sack , what little is on my shaft, and about 2 inches around the area. It defintely improves sensation during sex.
