Setting the mood in a hotel room for Valentines' Day

I'm renting out a hotel room for Valentines Day's night, and I'm thinking of ways of preparing the mood in the room beforehand to surprise my girlfriend. I have some questions regarding my ideas, and I'm also looking for any suggestions you guys may have to add.

Before I begin, there is one main limitation. I'll only have access to the room approximately 6 hours before my girlfriend will enter the room (with me), and I'll only have access to it for at most 15 minutes.

1) Rose petals on the bed/bathroom, etc.

I'm debating between fresh petals and freeze dried. I've read the thread on rose petals and I understand fresh petals will stain clothes, sheets and carpets, so that's not very good. Does anyone know if they stain by merely touching a fabric? Or does it need to be "pressed into" the fabric in order to stain? Also, will fresh petals wilt/turn color after 6 hours?

Also, how are freeze dried petals, which are supposed to not stain, but might not feel as soft, and silky? Are they any good? I've heard you can rehydrate them by putting them in a steamy bathroom for 30-60 minutes. Will that cause them to stain again? And also, will they "survive" for 6 hours?

2) Wine and/or Champagne

3) Massage oils

Last time I gave her a full-out massage, she fell asleep!! Any tips on how to keep her awake? also, she's allergic to a whole bunch of stuff. do you know if they make hypoallergenic massage oils?

4) Candle-lit bath

Rose petals in the bath a good idea?

Ok, well that's all I could think of. I'd really value any feedback to my questions, as well as other suggestions

Thanks!!

If you are afraid the rosepetals are going to stain the sheet, you can allways bring your own sheet. I think fresh petals would be the best! They're soft and smell good. You can also have some fresh roses there to make an even more pleasant smell. If shes allergic vanilla scentet candles may be out of place.

Perhaps you can spread the petals the moment you both get there.... Buy some time by blindfolding her. Some erotic lounge music, slowly undressing her - kissing her lightly - telling her how much you like/love each bodypart as you reveal them.

Lead her into the bathroom and bathe her. (Petals are nice in the tub - some massage oil in the water makes her skin baby-soft) Do it slowly and erotic - Alternate from light touches to deep kisses. Rub your body against her. By keeping her attention she won't fall asleep.

Kiss her all over as you dry her with a soft towle. Make it erotic, but don't cross the "edge" (It's not the right moment to fist her......yet *S* )

Then you can enter the bedroom and remove the blindfold. At this moment candles should be lit, and rose petals all over the bed.

Take your time to enjoy each other slowly, make it a good time you both will remember and talk of

I did the fresh rose pedal thing once a few years back. When I went to the flower shop to pick them up the ladies there kept giving me a weird grin like they knew exactly what I was going to do with those roses. I ended up taking them home and put them on the bed and anyone can guess what happened next. Didn't go to a hotel though. Maybe this year.

As someone who spends 1/2 their life in a hotel, you want a romantic touch - -bring your own towels, the hotel towels are generally stiff as boards, and not at all fluffy.

Hotels can have an antiseptic smell sometimes, so I'd bring along a lavendar room spray, or a lavendar linen spray.

Rose petals on the bed seems a little trite to me, plus it makes a mess. Roses by the bed, and blindfold her and run a rose up and down her body, or have her do it to you, is much more erotic.

Turn the heat up in the hotel, hotel rooms are generally chilly, so you'll want to be warm.

A flame retardent scarf to put over the lamp, hotel room lighting is awful, make your own ambiance. Music... most hotels generally only have a clock radio, so you will probably want to bring a cd player and a cd or two of music.

wow great advice so far. thanks so much!

after reading the first two posts, and before i read maleficent's post, i seemed pretty set on fresh petals. One of the advantages i've read about freeze dried was that they won't wilt. Is this going to be a problem with fresh ones? Do they wilt in a matter of hours? or does it take days?

Maleficent, your suggestion to use an actual rose seems interesting, i'll have to seriously consider that.

You also mentioned covering the lamps with a scarf to improve the lighting. What about candles? Do you think candles are going to set off the smoke detector?

This has all been good advice I think, I don't have too much to add except to say that I've never had a good experience with a warm bath before a romantic night. They always get too sleepy and just want to go to bed (to sleep) or they get dizzy with all the steam and the mood is gone.

Also if you're bringing candles in the room, make sure no fire alarms will go off! I think that's something you should give some serious thought to - house alarms won't react to candle smoke but hotel alarms are generally very, very sensitive, so make sure everything's safe there.

As a girl, I will try to give advice. For one, I wouldn't like the mess of rose petals, myself. Freezedried, or not. A candle-lit bath could be dangerous in a hotel room, also.

As for the massage, give it AFTER sex if you want her to stay awake. I'm sure she'll appreciate it just as much after as before. Champagne sounds great, and you might want to bring your own classical music CDs, etc.

Like mal said, try bringing your own pillows, etc. Wait...damn, just read her post and she basically has the same advice as I do. Damn.

we take LOTS and I mean LOTS of candles when we go stay in a hotel (sometimes as many as 24 lol) and we've never had a problem with them. I can honestly say rose petals wouldnt do anything for me, but thats just me. I'd vote for actual flowers. We also take this thing (im sure there is a name for it) but holds a votive candle underneath a very shallow dish which you put some kind of essence oil in, ours is in the form of two dragons and the wings hold the dish, (we always use scottish heather cause thats MY scent) and you pour some of it in the dish and the flame from the votive heats it up.....makes the room smell nice very very quickly

We've had good experiences with scented tea lights...teeny tiny candles all over the place. Get a pack of 12 or 24 and put them everywhere. Make sure you put them on something to protect the furniture. Go fo fresh flowers, they're more romantic and less messy. Have fun. Try to remember things she has told you. Dance with her.

candles prolly won't be a problem--but check with the hotel, they could tell you i'm sure. worst case scenario, you could ask for a smoking room (though with her allergies that might not be possible).

and i agree with others who suggested bringing personal items from home. unless you are going all out (and have seen what the hotel provides) chances are, the towels, pillows and bedding are going to suck.

i've never done the petal thing...i'm not a big fan of the idea (many women are, i'm just not a huge fan of roses period).

as for the massage oils, i'm sure you can find some hypoallergenic ones somewhere--but i'm not positive. if you can't find oils, just use lotions (i know you can find those!). warm it up in your hand a bit first and you're good to go.

i'd also suggest you take along some food. if it turns into a full night, you may be wanting something to eat. and who wants to break the mood while you take time to go get a burger? unless the hotel of choice has 24 hour room service, some light snacks that travel well wouldn't hurt. if you don't eat them that night, you can always take them home!

and if she doesn't know about the hotel in advance--pack her some clothes. i realize it isn't the most romantic thought when you have sex on the brain, but trust me, she'll appreciate having clean undies in the morning!

Everyone else has posted excellent ideas, but no matter what you do, make sure you bring something that smells good, whether it be incense, candles, whatever. A lot of hotels smell funky even if they are nonsmoking, and that sucks.

If you're worried about the rose petals, maybe pick up some roses right before you meet her. Show her the flowers, bring them up, then have her close her eyes or blindfold her, sitting on the edge of the bed, while you tend to candles, etc. You can pluck the petals as you want them from the flowers, which can be just as much fun as having a whole bunch there already. I second the fruit - you can maybe get a fondue pot and melt some chocolate when you get there, and take turns dipping fruit and feeding it to each other. You should definitely have some music, and are her favorite flowers actually roses? Being thoughtful and thinking about what SHE likes is the easiest way to get her in the mood.
