Female Contraception
I apologize if this is a re-post, but I did do a search and didnt find anything matching.
Well, we've got two lovely kids - one a product of the rythym (holy typo) method, and the second was planned. My wife does not like the pill at all, will not consider patches etc., doesnt like female condom and won't use an IUD. We've tried condoms, but quite honestly - i lose it the moment it goes on. I don't know if its psychological or just lack of sensation - a condom just kills it. We aren't ready for tubes tied or vasectomy yet. so. I would like to ask the ladies about your preferences for a couple of other contraceptives used. 1. The Sponge. The Today Sponge (a la Seinfeld fame) is now for sale in Canada and the price aint all that bad. 2. Spermacidal Foam. What are they like? Do they lessen any sensation for the woman? Can the guy feel them? What would you all recommend, and if there is anything else we could try that does not require a patch, injection or pill let me know! Daval

Daval, given your "luck" w/ the rhythm method, you're not going to want to hear this, but... my wife and I have had great success over the past two years with Natural Family Planning (which really isn't the same thing as rhythm). Pre-kids and in between the birth of our two kids, my wife was on the pill. When she quit so we could try to conceive, we got pregnant the very first month (we think the first time during each month) we tried to have kids. That being the case, we know she is very fertile, so lack of infertility cannot be the reason for our luck.
I have to admit that I was NOT thrilled w/ this concept, but my wife is great and I agreed to support her wishes, since it meant a lot to her (and since I hate wearing condoms and really didn't mind it if we had another kid). Here is the absolute BEST (!!!) part of NFP: it results in us having a LOT (!!!) more sex during the "safe" times of the month, since you have the "use it, or lose it" attitude; and it results in us having lots of horny petting / oral / titty / you-name-it (but not vaginal) sex sessions during the "unsafe" times of the month, which builds GREAT anticipation for the time when we can start having sex again. I don't know about you, but when you are married or living w/ someone and can have sex whenever you want, that anticipation factor, which is what makes things REALLY hot, tends to wane. It is very exciting to have this back in our relationship. |

Well, this is basically what we are doing....I just assumed it was called the rythm method. But even with the natural planning method it can still be dangerous and mistakes can be made. We've been lucky so far - we were using it for 4 years after daughters birth and like you said - when we tried to have our son he was concieved within like 2 weeks to my great dissapointment - i was looking forward to much more sex. Our daughter was concieved cause we did it when we weren't supposed to. I blame all the tequila we were drinking that night

I totally forgot about the diaphragm thingy. I've never been with a girl that used one, although I've seen one - looks like a suction cup, right? Hows that work? Would I like bump into it? Does it mean i only can go in an inch or two? Forgive my ignorance - I have no experience with those!

2 - yeah, diaphragms look like a suction cup, caps look like a big rubber thimble. fits snugly over the cervix. you wouldn't notise it during sex, but you would be able to feel it with a finger. just soft and rubbery, nothing 'odd' about it at all. doesn't get in the way or interfere with anything. afaik, some wome's cervixes are better shaped/suited for caps, in order to get a good suction. for your wife's part, insertion is easy - just as with a diaphragm, you put a bit of spermacidal gel inside the cap, and kinda squeese it together and insert. it has a nice way of almost automatically finding the cervix and attatching onto it. removal is a bit trickier, but not too difficult. one just must be able to reach in with finger far enough to 'break' the suction-seal, and then pull it out. works best when squatting, i would always take it out while in the shower. look into it, have her talk to her gyno about it, but it seems like it would be a good thing, at very least to use during more 'fertile' times or so. hope this helps

What about the Shot? My sister uses it and swears by it. It comes in 3 and 6 month doses and it proven effective and safe, with a smaller more focused dose of hormones that have less side effects than hormone bases pills.
Planned parenthood markets them for 25.00 a shot, regardless of age or financial status.

I've only dealt with the pill, condom or spermacide. I can't use latex condoms cause I'm allergic. Spermicide didn't seem to give me too much trouble. Made me a little irritated. Hubby got quite irritated from the spermicide though. I've heard that the diaphram is pretty good. Also there's NuvaRing NuvaRing She can check at the respective website for side effects and things. Some things work better for one person than they do for others. My mother gained almost a lb a day on the patch. My Sister-in-law liked the shot but she gained weight there too. She used to be size 5 but she's no where near that size now. I wish you good luck in finding the right solution for you.
With regards to Rhythm - have she ever used a basal thermometer and a system utilizing that? Supposely using a basal thermometer will help you know exactly when the woman ovulates and when pregnancy is most likely and least likely. Here's just something I pulled up quick that explains just a little. Basal Termperature Good Luck to the both of you.
