Theory
It occured to me in High School that people are attracted sexually to people who look like themselves (usually hair and skin). Over the years i have witnessed it more and more. So many of my friends who are attached fall into this category. I think its very interesting. Brad Pitt and Jen Aniston are a great celebrity example (she has a more chisseled jaw than he). Anyone else ever noticed this??

Maybe that is why I married my ex. He looked a lot like a younger version of my dad. Could that be Freudian?

I think attraction has more to do with the 2 people getting together having attractive offspring, rather than attraction between themselves. So maybe all these people who look the same, already believe that they are attractive enough so they get with someone who looks like them so then there children look like them aswell???
i hope that isn't too confusing, i didn't exaplin it very well... |

You can theorize about anything, and then there will be a random sampling that will fall into it. People have said that my wife and I look alike, but I don't see it. And as for the mother/father issue, no. My wife is blonde with green eyes, my mom has black hair and brown eyes.

Actually...the guys I go for are sort of my physical opposite.
I have blonde hair and blue eyes....I go for guys with dark hair and dark eyes. I'm tall and curvy...I go for guys that are medium-to-short and skinny. This "type" dates back to my earliest childhood crush. I wonder if that image has been burned into my subconcious as "my type", and I've gone after everyone else as a result...weird.

I don't buy this theory at all. I can say that I've dated a lot of women with the same physical atributes as my mother (dark hair, dark eyes, short, medium build) but I'm most attracted to other races (I'm white). I think black, asian, and latino women are the hottest on the planet. White women have to have a real, natural beauty for me to be attracted (I don't go for the "done up" look with all the makeup and slutty/sexy clothes).

none of my past gf's have looked anything like me... so i don't really buy into this. I really dig the asian persuasion, which is across the globe from my own heritage, and looks nothing like my mother.

I think people are attracted to people with whom they would be compatible. At least generally speaking.

The people i found this theory applying to more than any others were the people who were a bit hedonistic.

There has actually been studies on just this topic. I'm sure one could find the exact science someplace on the web. (I'll leave that to the more curious sort.)
It goes something like "...familiarity breeds attraction." Kind of makes sense. Although, it does manifest itself in various ways So all us geeky guys have a chance with those hot young girls, we just have to keep our mouths shut and hang out with them all the time. |

I was talking to my cousin a few years ago and he said "wogs like skips and skips like wogs". I thought thats true for me. I like the blonde hair blue eyes stuff. I then started looking around and as a genral rule its true. You always see aussie girls/guys with wog girls/guys. I wonder why this is?

i agree for the most part
i think it is based on psychologal (people are egotistical and see themselves as the most desirable) and deeper subconscious animal reasons (to propogate the species, people that look similar want to birth more like people) my parents look pretty similar, both me and my brother ( who looks nothing like me) have long time gf's that look like we do one glaring exception i've noticed throughout the years is that a lot of italian men married irish women i know of quite a few older couples like that

A 'skip' is an anglo saxon looking australian. As in Skippy the bush kangaroo. The steriotypical australian.
A 'wog' is a person of mediteranian descent in australia. It includes italians, greeks, yugoslavs and maltese. Though the italians wer also called 'daco's'. Ive been told that wog stands for western oriental gentleman but I doubt that was the origianl meaaning since it used to be an insult kinda like coon, nigger or nip. But now there isnt anywhere near as much ethnic hatred in australian societyso the terms can be used without too much hassle. Though if you use it infront of the older generation who still see it in the original context they can be offended. |

my ex totally looks like she could be my sister, if i had one, by facial features, except the freckles she has. we've been called out on it a few times, too, because she is 3 years younger than me, so if we were out shopping or something, sometimes we'd get the "brother/sister" comment. Interesting observation... I think there are large groups of similarities, such as many people are attracted to people that resemble them, whereas there are other large numbers of people who appreciate just the opposite.
I think the overwhelming numbers of consistencies may just be because you only have 3 basic choices: you either look alike, you don't, or you're exact opposites. *shrugs* |
