Theory

It occured to me in High School that people are attracted sexually to people who look like themselves (usually hair and skin). Over the years i have witnessed it more and more. So many of my friends who are attached fall into this category. I think its very interesting. Brad Pitt and Jen Aniston are a great celebrity example (she has a more chisseled jaw than he). Anyone else ever noticed this??

AHadley 09-09-2003 07:32 AM

I have noticed people who looked almost like they could be brother and sister, but I haven't noticed this in myself. I tend to like all types --- tall, short, big boobs, small boobs, dark hair blonde hair ... I can work with most anything!

legolas 09-09-2003 07:55 AM

My roomate's girlfriend looks EXACTLY like his sister. It's so freaky. He gets nailed for it so much too.

viveleroi0 09-09-2003 06:19 PM

I hate to admit this, but I find people attractive who resemble something similar to my Mother did when she was my age.

SexyCat 09-09-2003 06:28 PM

Umm...sometimes it is true, but sometimes not. I don't look anything like my boyfriend and neither does anyone else in my family. Then again, we are different races...go figure :)

GoldenOuroboros 09-09-2003 07:07 PM

I read something along the lines that most people are attracted to those that resemble their mother or father when they were born..

sexymama 09-09-2003 07:27 PM

Maybe that is why I married my ex. He looked a lot like a younger version of my dad. Could that be Freudian?

I told you!!! This shit is real. Let me go write some essays on the topic.

Sleepyjack 09-09-2003 10:58 PM

I think attraction has more to do with the 2 people getting together having attractive offspring, rather than attraction between themselves. So maybe all these people who look the same, already believe that they are attractive enough so they get with someone who looks like them so then there children look like them aswell???
i hope that isn't too confusing, i didn't exaplin it very well...

anti fishstick 09-10-2003 12:06 AM

no way jose. i like white boys.

Sledge 09-10-2003 01:49 AM

I avoid people who look like my mom. So gross.

My girlfriend is white and looks nothing like me.

motdakasha 09-10-2003 02:39 AM

i, too, dig white guys.

Averett 09-10-2003 04:33 AM

Im most attracted to guys with brown hair and brown eyes. I have brown hair and brown eyes. I totally buy this theory!

absorbentishe 09-10-2003 04:48 AM

You can theorize about anything, and then there will be a random sampling that will fall into it. People have said that my wife and I look alike, but I don't see it. And as for the mother/father issue, no. My wife is blonde with green eyes, my mom has black hair and brown eyes.

SabrinaFair 09-10-2003 01:28 PM

Actually...the guys I go for are sort of my physical opposite.

I have blonde hair and blue eyes....I go for guys with dark hair and dark eyes.

I'm tall and curvy...I go for guys that are medium-to-short and skinny.

This "type" dates back to my earliest childhood crush. I wonder if that image has been burned into my subconcious as "my type", and I've gone after everyone else as a result...weird.

cylune 09-10-2003 02:57 PM

The thing people find most attractive is, believe it or not, themselves.

Garcon 09-10-2003 03:35 PM

I don't buy this theory at all. I can say that I've dated a lot of women with the same physical atributes as my mother (dark hair, dark eyes, short, medium build) but I'm most attracted to other races (I'm white). I think black, asian, and latino women are the hottest on the planet. White women have to have a real, natural beauty for me to be attracted (I don't go for the "done up" look with all the makeup and slutty/sexy clothes).

bermuDa 09-10-2003 09:34 PM

none of my past gf's have looked anything like me... so i don't really buy into this. I really dig the asian persuasion, which is across the globe from my own heritage, and looks nothing like my mother.

Slims 09-11-2003 09:02 AM

I think people are attracted to people with whom they would be compatible. At least generally speaking.

Tusko 09-11-2003 10:20 AM

fuck no. if anything its the opposite. im not attracted to skinny redheaded girls. becuase, im a skinny redheaded guy. i like darkhaired, very "stark" looking girls (lol... avirl lavigne ;) ) or chicks with meat... like... i dunno... aria giovanni maybe? britney spears?

almostaugust 09-11-2003 12:57 PM

The people i found this theory applying to more than any others were the people who were a bit hedonistic.

arhat 09-11-2003 01:16 PM

There has actually been studies on just this topic. I'm sure one could find the exact science someplace on the web. (I'll leave that to the more curious sort.)

It goes something like "...familiarity breeds attraction."

Kind of makes sense. Although, it does manifest itself in various ways

So all us geeky guys have a chance with those hot young girls, we just have to keep our mouths shut and hang out with them all the time.

Lunchbox7 10-09-2003 10:21 AM

I was talking to my cousin a few years ago and he said "wogs like skips and skips like wogs". I thought thats true for me. I like the blonde hair blue eyes stuff. I then started looking around and as a genral rule its true. You always see aussie girls/guys with wog girls/guys. I wonder why this is?

Averett 10-09-2003 11:01 AM

I'm not up on my colorful language..... Whats a wog and skip?

sigma1042 10-09-2003 12:38 PM

i agree for the most part
i think it is based on psychologal (people are egotistical and see themselves as the most desirable) and deeper subconscious animal reasons (to propogate the species, people that look similar want to birth more like people)

my parents look pretty similar, both me and my brother ( who looks nothing like me) have long time gf's that look like we do

one glaring exception i've noticed throughout the years is that a lot of italian men married irish women i know of quite a few older couples like that

skysooner 10-09-2003 01:41 PM

I have dated all physical types, but the ones I felt most comfortable with came from my same socioeconomic group and culture generally. This is mostly due to personality, but I have a hard time separating the two.

i am not sure about a skip, but i think it could be an asian?
but a wog is an italian/greek olive skin, black hair, quite hairy, gold chain... sterotypes aren't too conclusive though..

man....i never knew that i was in such high demand
:suave:

fuzzix 10-10-2003 03:42 AM

This doesn't really apply to me, I have blue eyes and curly hair, whereas my perfect female partner would have brown eyes and straight hair.

mattevil 10-10-2003 05:20 AM

is it to much of a stretch that you would be attracted to the same types your parents were on a genetic level? I mean i could see some gene or something in a lineage making a guy respond to blonds, blue eyes, etc.

gremlinx8 10-10-2003 07:41 AM

I really like dark hair with blue eyes- there's just something about that contrast of light to dark I really like.

I always wondered why I was attracted to super-models.

Lunchbox7 10-10-2003 01:52 PM

A 'skip' is an anglo saxon looking australian. As in Skippy the bush kangaroo. The steriotypical australian.

A 'wog' is a person of mediteranian descent in australia. It includes italians, greeks, yugoslavs and maltese. Though the italians wer also called 'daco's'. Ive been told that wog stands for western oriental gentleman but I doubt that was the origianl meaaning since it used to be an insult kinda like coon, nigger or nip. But now there isnt anywhere near as much ethnic hatred in australian societyso the terms can be used without too much hassle. Though if you use it infront of the older generation who still see it in the original context they can be offended.

tekaweni 10-10-2003 02:31 PM

Yep exactly right. And people also choose pets that physically resemble them in some way also.

haha i've noticed that too.
i have a picture when i was about 10 with a bad perm holding my [then puppy] cocker spaniel next to my face. her curly black ears earily resembled my hair. :o

analog 10-10-2003 04:50 PM

my ex totally looks like she could be my sister, if i had one, by facial features, except the freckles she has. we've been called out on it a few times, too, because she is 3 years younger than me, so if we were out shopping or something, sometimes we'd get the "brother/sister" comment. Interesting observation... I think there are large groups of similarities, such as many people are attracted to people that resemble them, whereas there are other large numbers of people who appreciate just the opposite.

I think the overwhelming numbers of consistencies may just be because you only have 3 basic choices: you either look alike, you don't, or you're exact opposites. *shrugs*

hobo 10-10-2003 07:25 PM

I don't find this is true with myself. I find a variety of girls attractive and they all look quite different.
