It depends on the people involved. I don't really think there are any universal standards.

Don't mistake it for a 'proper' relationship.
It's just sex. Sex as fun, shared between people who enjoy each other's company, but that != 'Love'. Be disciplined in your mind and emotions and you'll be just fine. Oh, and don't talk to your other friends about it.

I know plenty of poly people on a different message board who would disagree with you, tisonlyi, that fuck buddy is just sex. I know some polys love their fuckbuddies.
I would like to re-iterate that I really doubt there is anything universal about fuckbuddies.

Maybe that's my definition of a fuck buddy clashing with yours then, motdakasha.
If you're a poly, then I don't think you can really use the term fuck buddy, can you? I mean, when you add Love, I mean real romantic Love, into the equation don't the relations move substantially higher than the concept of just a buddy you have sex with? I've had what I'd term fuck buddies, and i've been in relationships with several ladies at the same time - all knowing about each other. Those ladies all meant something to me romantically, there was more of a connection there than just friendship. I've probably only muddied the waters, but still.. For me, Fuck Buddy necessarily means the absence of romantic connections or Love. I guess everyone is entitled to use the term as they see fit though, it's unlikely to be defined in the Encyclopedea Britanica any time soon, I should imagine.

I didn't realize there was a rulebook stating which people are allowed to use what terms for relationships. Anyways, I've seen them use the term FB and explain that it is possible to love FBs. *Unfortunately, the message board I'm referring to was wiped out and restarted from scratch somewhere else, so the explanation of how it's possible to love an FB is no longer in existence.

I don't think I did _just_ restate your point, but...

what the hell...
The 'rules' have varied from one FB to the next and they're established with that person mostly in advance. That communication thing again... Some were ex's and we both had more than just casual feelings for one another and some were just... a physical attraction and we'd get together when it was convenient for both. The real common thread with all the FBs I've had was an understanding that any one night had no implication of any future nights. If another happened, gerat - if not, no worries. (shrug) every situation is different...
