Karen Owen’s now infamous PowerPoint “thesis” detailing the thirteen men she had relations with while an undergraduate student at Duke University has quickly become a social media cautionary tale.

Though Owen wrote her 42-page dossier, titled “An education beyond the classroom: excelling in the realm of horizontal academics” reportedly for a few select friends, nothing juicy stays a secret for long in today’s Web world — especially when said item is easily forward-able. After circulating amongst the Duke student body, the mock thesis went viral after it was published by several websites, including the Gawker-owned Jezebel and Deadspin.

A crudely nicknamed takeoff list has even hit the mainstream, with established newspapers writing up reports and the Today show sending out a correspondent to Duke’s Durham, North Carolina campus. (In the below clip, Today reporter Jeff Rossen hilariously points out “People gossip with their friends all the time about sex… I’ve been told.” Now there are even reports of book offers going out to Owen. Can a TV show be far behind?

After reading through that, I think a good study would be how males get educated on how to pick up women. I mean, from age 12-14 they know nothing, to here were age 18-22 guys who were not shy about it and were successful.

So, what happens in those 4-8 years? Is it natural, did they learn it from older brothers/friends, did they just try the same moves on 50 girls and got lucky with one?

And I think rule 180 applies. For every life the Internet improves, 10 are destroyed. Some of those guys got a great recommendation, others got exposed as inadequate. Or rule 20, take nothing seriously(she had sex, wow, she went into detail about it and lots of people found out, interesting just because it is usually guys who kiss n' tell or make movies)

The problem is not that she had a healthy, active sex life, it is that her private notes about it were made public!

Please don't demonize healthy sexuality. Young people are perfectly capable of creating long-term stable and happy relationships, whether they are number 4, 14, or 40. Why instill fear in young people about healthy sexuality? It is perfectly okay to have an active sex life, as long as you have safe sex and are honest with your partners about being non-exclusive.

I think the church is the major offender when it comes to encouraging fear and negativity in connection with sex. What is wrong with liking sex? Nothing. "Sleeping around" can be wonderful. But for some reason people get uncomfortable and judgmental when they actually hear people say they love sex...especially when women say it.:rolleyes:

I know this is somewhat off topic but I just think it's always worth pointing out that one amazingly well-lubricated individual in that graph that apparently had sex with eight girls and one guy.

Is nobody else confused as to why she used PowerPoint? I mean, I've used PowerPoint extensively in the military, at college, and now as a part of my job... but I've never had the urge to put anything remotely sexual in a PowerPoint (*). Slideshow for a bedpost notch list? Who does that?

I can't see the guy who did that - there's the guy at about 12 o'clock who had 8 girls, but the only homosexual links I can see anywhere is the triangle of 2 girls and a guy at 1 o'clock.

I went to two like that and I didn't get laid until college mostly because I'm pretty sure even if I'd double-bagged before doing any of those HS girls it would STILL have turned green and fallen off.


Back on topic though I'm pretty sure this will NOT end well. Even though truth is an absolute defense against libel it's still going to be a pretty uphill battle if anyone actually tries to bring suit with this.

yeah the format in which this is presented is incriminating enough in my opinion to write this woman off as a complete sociopath. Doesn't matter what gender you are, people who do this are pretty lame.

Like I wouldn't mind getting 100% honest feedback from an ex or current partner in this format, but not in a presentation format which is designed to show off information to groups.

What is amazing to me is that this is newsworthy at all.

I think if a male student made this list instead of a female they'd be looking for a way to charge him with a crime of some kind.

My two points are A) she's not all that hot, and B) The overall quality and methodology of her thesis sucks almost as much as her. This should not be news, this should not even be something that any single one of us is aware of.

I expect she feels a bit embarrassed, the guys... I guess it depends how she rated them how the feel.

I don't think it is a crime (criminal or civil), but I am interested in this from a sociological perspective.

The brutally honest sexual history of a college female is rare.

(And even though I don't like censorship, I think it would be OK to change the names. I don't know any of them, and it wouldn't make any difference to me. I have a problem with the black boxes and knowing who is person 1 or if they are talking about person 3,4, or 5 under the box.)

I don't think anyone believes a crime has been committed here. I think I started us in that direction with my comments that if genders were reversed they'd be looking for a way to charge the male student. I doubt they'd find a crime. But I seriously believe the response would be completely different.

If I were one of those guys, I'd be damn sure a crime had been committed. I'm surprised none of them have yet sued her for libel. There is more than 'personal opinion' here, and most of it is thoroughly covered by libel law. Maybe because they don't want their name to be associated, and they're hoping only their picture will be there, unrecognized.
