Karen Owen's Fuck List - Duke University Student's mock thesis on Jocks she bedded
Karen Owen’s now infamous PowerPoint “thesis” detailing the thirteen men she had relations with while an undergraduate student at Duke University has quickly become a social media cautionary tale.
Though Owen wrote her 42-page dossier, titled “An education beyond the classroom: excelling in the realm of horizontal academics” reportedly for a few select friends, nothing juicy stays a secret for long in today’s Web world — especially when said item is easily forward-able. After circulating amongst the Duke student body, the mock thesis went viral after it was published by several websites, including the Gawker-owned Jezebel and Deadspin. A crudely nicknamed takeoff list has even hit the mainstream, with established newspapers writing up reports and the Today show sending out a correspondent to Duke’s Durham, North Carolina campus. (In the below clip, Today reporter Jeff Rossen hilariously points out “People gossip with their friends all the time about sex… I’ve been told.” Now there are even reports of book offers going out to Owen. Can a TV show be far behind? Karen Owen's Duke Powerpoint: Horizontal Academics Goes Viral - Speakeasy - WSJ ---------- Post added at 06:39 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:38 PM ---------- Oh, and here's the list..... http://deadspin.com/5652280/the-full...yline=true&s=i 13 guys in 4 years is no big deal, but so much for discretion. I only hope she got a release (ahem) in writing from each of these guys she is writing about. |
Her parents must be proud. Stay classy, Duke.
I don't really care about what she did. But if I was her, I wouldn't want to visit daddy on Thanksgiving break. |
So, her diary became public knowledge. At least we all know what a large percentage of women really think about sex.
That isn't the list. It is censored. |
Let's hope her "Fuck List" is the only thing that went viral.....

On a more practical note, this reminds me of the Ohio State study of high school sex partners. Researchers Map The Sexual Network Of An Entire High School I wonder how many of the guys current relationships are going through problems because this ex made some not-to-flattering info public... I wonder how I would rate on her fuck list? ---------- Post added at 09:27 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:03 PM ---------- After reading through that, I think a good study would be how males get educated on how to pick up women. I mean, from age 12-14 they know nothing, to here were age 18-22 guys who were not shy about it and were successful. So, what happens in those 4-8 years? Is it natural, did they learn it from older brothers/friends, did they just try the same moves on 50 girls and got lucky with one? |

it proves that Duke sucks.

Also, BAD asu2003, don't link to that horrible FBI watched torrent site. Bad news. |
Quote:
Duke doesn't suck. They are awesome! That and this chick is a douchebagguette! |

But, I doubt the FBI is going to waste their time protecting Karen Owen's secrets. Although, TPB has pulled the description and you can't search for it, all the media sites have censored it, and she tried to eliminate herself digitally from the internet. http://blogs.forbes.com/kashmirhill/...nneltopstories Not a bad wipe job, but it is out there and they should accept it and go from there.* And I think rule 180 applies. For every life the Internet improves, 10 are destroyed. Some of those guys got a great recommendation, others got exposed as inadequate. Or rule 20, take nothing seriously(she had sex, wow, she went into detail about it and lots of people found out, interesting just because it is usually guys who kiss n' tell or make movies) I wonder what the guys would say about her? *And while I don't think she should become religious, this is an area where the church should say, had she not slept around, she wouldn't be having this problem. And then use reasoning and psychology to help teens improve relationships and create long-term, stable, and happy couples who know that they aren't number 14. |
Quote:
Please don't demonize healthy sexuality. Young people are perfectly capable of creating long-term stable and happy relationships, whether they are number 4, 14, or 40. Why instill fear in young people about healthy sexuality? It is perfectly okay to have an active sex life, as long as you have safe sex and are honest with your partners about being non-exclusive. I think the church is the major offender when it comes to encouraging fear and negativity in connection with sex. What is wrong with liking sex? Nothing. "Sleeping around" can be wonderful. But for some reason people get uncomfortable and judgmental when they actually hear people say they love sex...especially when women say it. |

Is nobody else confused as to why she used PowerPoint? I mean, I've used PowerPoint extensively in the military, at college, and now as a part of my job... but I've never had the urge to put anything remotely sexual in a PowerPoint (*). Slideshow for a bedpost notch list? Who does that?
< This guy. *starts work immediately, looks for phone numbers and addresses to go with pictures* |

Damn, I wish I'd gone to that high school. I didn't get laid until afterward.
|
Interesting because I've had a copy of that image for years and Mr. Hefner up there looks a bit different in my copy. Must be a photoshop...

Back on topic though I'm pretty sure this will NOT end well. Even though truth is an absolute defense against libel it's still going to be a pretty uphill battle if anyone actually tries to bring suit with this. |
Quote:
But a f'ing Powerpoint presentation? Was she planning on releasing this to the world? |
Quote:
Like I wouldn't mind getting 100% honest feedback from an ex or current partner in this format, but not in a presentation format which is designed to show off information to groups. |
So if she converted it to a word document, it would be perfectly alright? I mean PP is just an easy way to put up the info she "researched", then again people have many money off of doing things like this.
I think it's funny and it probably just a way to blow off steam after making ten million PPs for school. Personally, I could care less who she humped in college, but I do have to say something about her taste... I mean duke college students? That's the lowest of the low. GO TARHEELS! |
What is amazing to me is that this is newsworthy at all.
13 partners in 4 years? Meh. And describing body parts and acts in an era where you can find someone's sex tape in 5 minutes isn't that wild. Which leads me to think that she has already signed up for a book and movie deal as a carrie bradshaw/tucker max mix and this powerpoint isn't real at all, just the first step in a viral campaign. |

I think if a male student made this list instead of a female they'd be looking for a way to charge him with a crime of some kind.

My two points are A) she's not all that hot, and B) The overall quality and methodology of her thesis sucks almost as much as her. Oh i guess C) would be complete agreement with Tully, If a guy did this all hell would break loose and people would be bemoaning the wrecking of their precious little daughters good names.
|
"Not all that hot." As if that is relevant.
|
Anyone else notice that she claims to have no recollection of the night with the highest scoring subject? If that be the case I'd say that she felt the word inadequate applied to everybody on that list.
//edit err...Disregard that, apparently I suck at reading. |
I think I'm getting old: I have no desire to click on the link and read this crap.
I'm so tired of talentless people becoming famous in this country. |
Crap. Cim's right this person is going to end up with a talk show.
|
It's not unprecedented. There's lots of talentless folks that get noticed and launched. Shit, I worked with Debbie Matenopolous when she was an intern at MTV, sleep with the right people and boom you're golden.
The Peculiar Endurance of Florence Foster Jenkins - Opera's Greatest Bad Singer |
I have no idea who Debbie Matenopolous is and I'm thinking that's good.
And that is some seriously bad singing. |
Now I know I'm getting old. I don't know who Debbie Matenopolous is. I googled her, and don't recognize her. Jenny McCarthy was hosting a dating gameshow, the last time I watched MTV.
|
now wait a minute.
i am not going to sit idly by while the transcendent genius of florence foster jenkins is impugned. witness... now obviously this is not bad. this is Something Other. florence was in and from Another Place Altogether. so obviously the majesty that is florence foster jenkins is not pertinent in a thread like this. next thing you know you'll be bringing up yma sumac and i'll have to reach through this monitor and slap you upside the head. |
I cant imagine why anyone cares.
Does anyone seriously think that this girl should be charged for this? In the same country that Chris Brown is allowed to beat and throttle his girlfriend and just get a bit of community service, does anyone think a college girl ought to face charges for telling two friends about the guys she had consensual sex with? Get real! This should not be news, this should not even be something that any single one of us is aware of. I expect she feels a bit embarrassed, the guys... I guess it depends how she rated them how the feel. |
I don't think it is a crime (criminal or civil), but I am interested in this from a sociological perspective.
The brutally honest sexual history of a college female is rare. (And even though I don't like censorship, I think it would be OK to change the names. I don't know any of them, and it wouldn't make any difference to me. I have a problem with the black boxes and knowing who is person 1 or if they are talking about person 3,4, or 5 under the box.) |
I don't think anyone believes a crime has been committed here. I think I started us in that direction with my comments that if genders were reversed they'd be looking for a way to charge the male student. I doubt they'd find a crime. But I seriously believe the response would be completely different.
|
If I were one of those guys, I'd be damn sure a crime had been committed. I'm surprised none of them have yet sued her for libel. There is more than 'personal opinion' here, and most of it is thoroughly covered by libel law. Maybe because they don't want their name to be associated, and they're hoping only their picture will be there, unrecognized.
|
...but would you hit it?
... Based on the scan (*) I did of the OP materials, I hafta wonder if half those dudes remember impaling her. They probably woke up from a Busch / Natty Ice coma the next day and wondered why their dick smelled like it'd been to work. I know that's how college was for me... minus the shit beer; I stuck to liquor. Man, I've got some funny stories I should put into a headline-making PowerPoint. Ever get a handjob from a girl without thumbs? |
It's not libel if it's true.
|
Quote:
You can sue somebody for anything, but the deck is stacked with social norms. Women are allowed to act a fool like this. Men aren't. That and you can't really sue somebody for what amounts to a product review. "His cunnilingus skills are mediocre at best," is an opinion. It's not a whole lot different then somebody's __popular social website__ commentary getting outta control. |
