I believe it was Camillia Paglia who made the arguement that rape is a crime of sex and not a crime of power. I tend to agree. A hard up man can be a dangerous thing in many cases. I believe that it's more comfortable for people (and men in particular) to say that rape is about power and or violence then to admit to themselves that it's about sex because to say that it is about sex means that any man is a potential rapist (which simply isn't true). But getting back to the topic at hand, Prostitution in Canada is already legal, but only in the form of an outcall (call girl) where you call up the Sex Worker and make arrangements for her to come to your hotel or your home. Street walking and brothels are still very much illegal. Unfortunately, when most people (and in reading these posts, I would say a great many posters here) think of prositutes, they think of a girl standing on a street corner hustling guys walking or driving down the streets. (This may have been true 20 years ago, but now a days, there are few if any street walkers that I see hanging out in the streets.) I have no problem with call girls, or even brothels. I would draw the line at Street Walkers however. As to regulation, I'd want the police to ensure that all sex workers are over the age of 18, not being forced into it, and have a license. I voted yes. I don't believe that legalizing prostitution in this country will have any effect on the number of rape incidents though.
I live in South Africa, so I know only too well the number and nature of sex crimes being committed. When you look at how many reports there of young girls - sometimes even toddlers - being raped by their uncles, stepfathers and other men in their community, it makes it clear to me that in a lot of cases rape has got sweet buggerall to do with sex. I'm really embarrassed at these South African government assholes who think they know what they're doing. So yeah, I agree with mixed in that it should be legalized but really heavily regulated and controlled. However, I don't think it'll work in this country. Too many 'young girls' are going to see the 2010 WC as an opportunity to make a quick buck and will be roaming the streets of all the cities in the hope of some cash. Not to mention what it'll do to our already out of control HIV/AIDS problem. Is South Africa really the rape capital of the world? Wow.
