A new report has been completed concerning the alleged abuse at the hands of American Military Forces in this war on terror. As I find the organization that filed the report reputable, I must say I am disturbed at the findings. Rather than cloud the forum with a series of quotes from the report, I will simply place this here:
The soldiers’ accounts show widespread confusion among military units about the legal standards applicable to detainees. One of the sergeants quoted in the report described how abuse of detainees was accepted among military units: “Trends were accepted. Leadership failed to provide clear guidance so we just developed it. They wanted intel [intelligence]. As long as no PUCs came up dead it happened. We heard rumors of PUCs dying so we were careful. We kept it to broken arms and legs and shit.” and supply the link: http://www.hrw.org/english/docs/2005...usint11776.htm My hope is we can discuss the information in this report....rather than debate the Evil nature of those imprisoned.

In a war, I expect things like this to happen. Of all the places and situations I can think of where I would expect everyone to be treated in a kind manner, war is at the absolute bottom of my list.
I don't find this shocking or hard to believe or even wrong. I see it, simply, as a part of war. They have never been pretty and they never will be,

The source seems reasonably credible. I think my only criticism is that the information they have doesn't support their claim of widespread abuse. They cited a handful of instances that, while totally inappropriate, don't necessarily lend credence to the hypothesis that detainees are routinely treated like this in multiple military prisons. It seems as though the organization has an interest in exaggerating the severity and scope of the abuse...

The peculiar evil of silencing the expression of an opinion is, that it is robbing the human race; posterity as well as the existing generation; those who dissent from the opinion, still more than those who hold it. If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth: if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with error. ~John Stuart Mill, On Liberty |

Well I think the board deserves to have the article in full without tecoyah's biased and contextless presentation. Note that "war on terror" appears only in a quote skeptical of the claim that these abuses have anything to do with such a war. The Orwellian term PUC stands for "person under control."
