Resistance to the 'Patriot Act' in the Heartland
I found this article from Newsweek quite interesting, especially the manner in which the citizens of Geuda Springs, Kansas are reacting to the 'Patriot Act'. Resistance to the Patriot Act is growing in the American heartland <--Link!

Seems like it has no real relevance. So, a bunch of people passed a law that requires homes to have a gun. What makes the relatively few viewpoints communicated indicative of the Midwest or gives them greater significance than someone you run across in Spanish Harlem or anywhere else in the US?
The simple fact that they voted to force every homeowner in town to be a gun owner shows they are not representative of the nation at large or the heartland. The response that we can turn the country into a parking lot says a lot about the level of thinking that at least one of the town spokespeople put into the situation.

The point, I think, is that Bush is counting on folks like these to be his bread and butter in 04, and this article shows that to not necessarily be the case.
Interesting how that one person said the right to bear arms was one of the last rights he had left- helps show why some people are so protective of it.

There two threads running on this board right now - this one and one about another totally inane act by the 9th Circuit Court.
http://tfproject.org/tfp/showthread.php?threadid=36608 While these two posts may be extremes it does show how far apart some parts of the country have drifted. The attitude of the town in Kansas probably would generate much more support than anything done by the 9th Circuit - Conflict? There is a definite rift developing in this country - call it liberal/conservative or call it us/them - call it whatever suits you best but a lot of people are totally fed up with a lot of what the ninth circuit seems to believe should be the law of the land - and just think - once it was over a 1/10th of a cent tax and all hell broke loose.

If what he's saying is correct and even conservatives think Bush is a baby killing simpleton then he won't win in '04. I'll just make a note to make fun of this guy later.

This not the first area to require gun ownership. Kenessaw, Georgia passed a law around 1993 or so requiring all male landowners to be gun owners. It got some attention, but the media flurry eventually passed. Kenessaw is a lot bigger than this other place.

i dislike the tone of the article. he seems to be implying...
"hey look, even these gun-toting rednecks don't like the bush administration!" it reeks of smug superiority to me.
