" Do you want a terrorist living in England thread"

Well,

Mr Aziz wants asylum in the UK. He will provide information relating to terrorists, providing he receives immunity. Agree/ disagree?

PS: This information is crititcal to U.S. national security.

If you already know what he has to say why do you need him to say it?

As long as it is known where he lives, and he isn't given a new identity... Sure.

I doubt he'll survive for more than a few months.

If Aziz fully cooperates, it is worth it, IMHO.

He has been with Saddam since the 50's and he is a treasure trove of information.

Of course, some people will just say he is making things up for asylum.

His words were The information will be critical to US national security.

Can't really say I'm up for it. He wasn't an opposition leader, he was thick as thieves with Saddam.

Don't want Britain to capitulate to the US on this one. If the UK is seen to be an "easy touch" for these characters to seek asylum our social system will be overrun. There is already a problem with "Asylum" seekers putting strain on the benefits and health care system. Don't want my tax money going to him.

My point would be if he needs to have a safe place to stay in return for info send him to the US. Especially if his info is related to US security.

I think it would be a very wise move to do this. Tariq Aziz would be a goldmine of information to the US.

Asylum? How about no, but you can stay in this comfortable 2 room flat...and never leave. A prisoner of sorts, yes, but full asylum, no.

Fairly sensible suggestion. As long as he has a way to earn $$ so he can pay for his own upkeep. Somethin' nice and interesting like hospital cleaner or trustee?

As I have heard reports that he may have been the CIA's "mole", I don't think he needs to be fully prosecuted. Although I could also have been misled by the media, but withholding judgement for the time being.

Was Tariq Aziz a terrorist? Wasn't he a part of Sadams regime?

I don't think that Aziz is a "terrorist". Call him a survivor, or a manipulator, a talking head, a spin doctor, but terrorist probably won't fit. Aziz is probably, outside of Saddam, the best known Iraqi figure simply because of the exposure he has gotten as the official voice of Iraq on many occasions. He is intelligent, well educated, and probably knows a lot of things we would like to know. I believe he should be milked for everything that can be wrung out, cajoled out, or scared out of him. Promise him whatever he wants because there is no place on earth that will ever be safe for him. Probably the only way he can survive is in a maximum security prison, isolated from the rest of the world. He is a source of information - I believe we should take every advantage of that source possible.

Double standards aren't so bad when they save lives. Make no mistake, we want this bastard to pay, but how does bringing him to justice weigh against the lives of American civilians if his information is that urgent?

I think we should lie to him, get what we need, and shoot him in the back of the head. Secretly.

As far as i am aware (which is fairly limited, as I normally stick to the Financial, Sports, and Page 3 (USA you lost out on this one))...

Mr. Aziz was the Deputy for Mr. Hussain, although I suspect his role was purely diplomatic (not, saying he is innocent), compared to Saddam's sons and family who were not as effective diplomats (shooting someone is not a diplomatic solution in my book). However in his role as Deputy I do not think he was entirely separate from what Saddam was doing nor segregated from the general Human Rights abuses that occured under that regime.
I only feel that he should not be allowed Asylum rights in the UK (This would basically give him a free holiday under current British socialism rule) in return for his information. He may for his work (unproven) for the CIA and in the interest of National Security of the USA given the same chance any non-priviledged minority gets in the USA. ie. Work Hard, Get an education and prosper (at least thats what I believe in). Although earlier I liked the nice prison alternative as long as he pays for it. Beats being Dead in my book..

All this is IMHO only...
