Yes, taxes have increased immeasurably. We are bringing infinately more into teh government now than we ever have before.

Whats not listed is expenditures. 100 years ago did anyone hear of a school? How many actually went? Anyone subsidize farmers back then?

What happened as we grew as a country and needed more money for the more programs that we got involved in. I dont think the increase in the amount of taxes is too disproportional to the amount of expenses. Maybe thats just me though.

Here's some info from The Straight Dope on how U.S. taxes (around 2000) compare to the rest of the world:

http://www.straightdope.com/columns/001201.html

I just can't muster up the strength to debate this, so I'll just say that in general, you pay for things one way or another, and who's to say that taxation isn't as good a way of doing it as any other, at least for some things.

That does nothing to prove causation. Not to mention that laundry listing taxes says nothing about the amount at which they are set. Also implicit in your arguement is that we are too far right on the laffer curve, and that if taxes were lowered, we would have better economic progress. Well, that my friend, is called reaganomics...and we tried it once. We're trying it again. I have no expectation that it will work any better than the miserable failure we had under Reagan.

As much as I dislike being taxed. Its not the quantity of the money being taken out, its the quality of what the money is being used for. I'm not anti-social services completely, but I always find it shocking how much money is pissed away on things that it could've helped elsewhere.

Also, for the record, I think your comment to the effect that times were better because women were staying home to raise babies instead of pursuing careers is utterly tactless. Women don't stay home to raise your babies because they don't want to.

You are correct. Some parents do not raise their children correctly because they do not want to.

Keep in mind that Customs agents work to prevent a deluge of weapons and drugs, not only illegal immigrants. I don't think America would be very safe if we didn't do anything to regulate what comes in. In spirit I agree with you, but I think the solution is to have a reformed, more compassionate immigration policy; not having Customs or border patrol at all is a bad idea. Especially now that Bush has made America the enemy of the world.

A high-level agency that oversees all the various aspects of transportation (statistics, laws, interagency operability). Here are some more services that they oversee.

OSHA is a critical protector of worker's rights in America. It is this group that is responsible for the laws that require companies to provide a safe working environment, and training. You might think that companies would do this on their own, but you would be absolutely wrong. The hazards of many production-style jobs are numerous, and it is often expensive to protect and inform the disposable workforce. OSHA is famous for enforcing the requirement that companies provide a reference book to employees that lists every chemical they might come in contact with or be expected to use, which outlines its potential hazards and long-term exposure effects. You can not trust a corporation to do this, and there are many expamples of workers getting the shaft on this count.

This is OSHA's mission statement from its website (http://osha.gov):

OSHA's mission is to ensure safe and healthful workplaces in America. Since the agency was created in 1971, workplace fatalities have been cut in half and occupational injury and illness rates have declined 40 percent. At the same time, U.S. employment has doubled from 56 million workers at 3.5 million worksites to 111 million workers at 7 million sites.

I'm shocked that the right-wing pundits of TFP have nothing but silence on this subject. Aren't you going to tell me how these services are all Liberal hair-brained schemes to waste people's money and promote communism?

So, by this logic, should no one protect their borders? Since the dawn of man, we have been fighting, raping, and killing each other over land. It's not just the nasty American pigs that have been doing so. :P

Border protection is purely a matter of self-preservation, and I don't see it as being hypocritical.

Whoa, whoa, whoa and whoa! I originally put this in Tilted Humor, because I thought it was funny. Jadzia Dax thought it to be more political in nature, and subsequently moved it here. I thought that it was worth a chuckle or two, not a debate on the worthiness, fairness and effectiveness of taxation. Jeez, and I thought I was wound too tight...lighten up guys. It was supposed to be a fricken' joke, for cryin' out loud.

Ok, ok, please stop... it is just too taxing. Personally there should be just one tax... a consumption tax. And a special tax for CEO's who make more than one million dollars a year.
