Yes, taxes have increased immeasurably. We are bringing infinately more into teh government now than we ever have before.
Whats not listed is expenditures. 100 years ago did anyone hear of a school? How many actually went? Anyone subsidize farmers back then? What happened as we grew as a country and needed more money for the more programs that we got involved in. I dont think the increase in the amount of taxes is too disproportional to the amount of expenses. Maybe thats just me though.

Here's some info from The Straight Dope on how U.S. taxes (around 2000) compare to the rest of the world:
http://www.straightdope.com/columns/001201.html I just can't muster up the strength to debate this, so I'll just say that in general, you pay for things one way or another, and who's to say that taxation isn't as good a way of doing it as any other, at least for some things.

As much as I dislike being taxed. Its not the quantity of the money being taken out, its the quality of what the money is being used for. I'm not anti-social services completely, but I always find it shocking how much money is pissed away on things that it could've helped elsewhere.

Also, for the record, I think your comment to the effect that times were better because women were staying home to raise babies instead of pursuing careers is utterly tactless. Women don't stay home to raise your babies because they don't want to.

This is OSHA's mission statement from its website (http://osha.gov): OSHA's mission is to ensure safe and healthful workplaces in America. Since the agency was created in 1971, workplace fatalities have been cut in half and occupational injury and illness rates have declined 40 percent. At the same time, U.S. employment has doubled from 56 million workers at 3.5 million worksites to 111 million workers at 7 million sites. Quote:

Whoa, whoa, whoa and whoa! I originally put this in Tilted Humor, because I thought it was funny. Jadzia Dax thought it to be more political in nature, and subsequently moved it here. I thought that it was worth a chuckle or two, not a debate on the worthiness, fairness and effectiveness of taxation. Jeez, and I thought I was wound too tight...lighten up guys. It was supposed to be a fricken' joke, for cryin' out loud.
