We had no national debt, we had the largest middle class in the world, and mom was able to stay home to raise the kids. What Happened?!?!? |
don't forget the other FEES and SURCHARGES...
and one tax you didn't list... GROSS RECEIPTS TAX, it's the one that you get to pay for the phone companies gross receipts so that they don't have to pay as much taxes. |
Yes, taxes have increased immeasurably. We are bringing infinately more into teh government now than we ever have before.
Whats not listed is expenditures. 100 years ago did anyone hear of a school? How many actually went? Anyone subsidize farmers back then? What happened as we grew as a country and needed more money for the more programs that we got involved in. I dont think the increase in the amount of taxes is too disproportional to the amount of expenses. Maybe thats just me though. |
Try to list the benefits we ALL get from taxes. Betcha can't.
|
No dudes and dudettes, the government have no extra spendings, they just collect the taxes and bury our money under the white house, for no reason whatsoever.

Here's some info from The Straight Dope on how U.S. taxes (around 2000) compare to the rest of the world:
http://www.straightdope.com/columns/001201.html I just can't muster up the strength to debate this, so I'll just say that in general, you pay for things one way or another, and who's to say that taxation isn't as good a way of doing it as any other, at least for some things. |
And dont forget to vote democrat so that more inepte social programs can beformed and taxes can be raised!
|
Holy Crap. Can anyone spare a dime...

If we could only get some tax relief to the richest one percent, cause lord knows, they need more.
|
As much as I dislike being taxed. Its not the quantity of the money being taken out, its the quality of what the money is being used for. I'm not anti-social services completely, but I always find it shocking how much money is pissed away on things that it could've helped elsewhere.

Okay fair enough. Now, can you tell me how many of the following agencies and services required funding 100 years ago? Which of these do you consider unimportant and why?
Thanks. US Bureau of Customs and Border Protection US Department of Education US Department of Transportation Federal Aviation Administration National Child Care Information Center US Small Business Administration Office of Child Support Enforcement Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Department of Veterans Affairs US Department of Health and Human Services Food and Drug Administration Food Safety and Inspection Service US Social Security Administration (Welfare Reform) US Census Bureau US Department of Labor Department of Commerce Temporary Assistance to Needy Families - Office of Family Assistance National Criminal Justice Reference Service (NCJRS) US Fish and Wildlife Administration for Children and Families US Department of Agriculture National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Technical Information Service (NTIS) US Department of Agriculture Food and Consumer Service Agency for Health Care Policy and Research Consumer Information Children's Bureau (CB) Child Care Bureau (CCB) Family and Youth Services Bureau (FYSB) Office of Community Services Division of Tribal Services Employment and Training Administration US Health Care Financing Administration |
Also, for the record, I think your comment to the effect that times were better because women were staying home to raise babies instead of pursuing careers is utterly tactless. Women don't stay home to raise your babies because they don't want to.

This is OSHA's mission statement from its website (http://osha.gov): OSHA's mission is to ensure safe and healthful workplaces in America. Since the agency was created in 1971, workplace fatalities have been cut in half and occupational injury and illness rates have declined 40 percent. At the same time, U.S. employment has doubled from 56 million workers at 3.5 million worksites to 111 million workers at 7 million sites. Quote:
--- I'm shocked that the right-wing pundits of TFP have nothing but silence on this subject. Aren't you going to tell me how these services are all Liberal hair-brained schemes to waste people's money and promote communism? |

Border protection is purely a matter of self-preservation, and I don't see it as being hypocritical. |
Whoa, whoa, whoa and whoa! I originally put this in Tilted Humor, because I thought it was funny. Jadzia Dax thought it to be more political in nature, and subsequently moved it here. I thought that it was worth a chuckle or two, not a debate on the worthiness, fairness and effectiveness of taxation. Jeez, and I thought I was wound too tight...lighten up guys. It was supposed to be a fricken' joke, for cryin' out loud.
|
Ok, ok, please stop... it is just too taxing. Personally there should be just one tax... a consumption tax. And a special tax for CEO's who make more than one million dollars a year.
