Racism is over!

Pool Boots Kids Who Might "Change the Complexion" | NBC Philadelphia

More than 60 campers from Northeast Philadelphia were turned away from a private swim club and left to wonder if their race was the reason.

Kids at Creative Steps Day Camp were thrilled to go swimming once a week at the Valley Swim Club. But after only one trip to the private club, they were...

"I heard this lady, she was like, 'Uh, what are all these black kids doing here?' She's like, 'I'm scared they might do something to my child,'" said camper Dymire Baylor.

The Creative Steps Day Camp paid more than $1900 to The Valley Swim Club. The Valley Swim Club is a private club that advertises open membership. But the campers' first visit to the pool suggested otherwise.

"When the minority children got in the pool all of the Caucasian children immediately exited the pool," Horace Gibson, parent of a day camp child, wrote in an email. "The pool attendants came and told the black children that they did not allow minorities in the club and needed the children to leave immediately."

The next day the club told the camp director that the camp's membership was being suspended and their money would be refunded.

"I said, 'The parents don't want the refund. They want a place for their children to swim,'" camp director Aetha Wright said.

Campers remain unsure why they're no longer welcome.

"They just kicked us out. And we were about to go. Had our swim things and everything," said camper Simer Burwell.

The explanation they got was either dishearteningly honest or poorly worded.

"There was concern that a lot of kids would change the complexion … and the atmosphere of the club," John Duesler, President of The Valley Swim Club said in a statement.

While the parents await an apology, the camp is scrambling to find a new place for the kids to beat the summer heat.
We heard it over and over that racism is over because we have a black president. I think this story goes to show that racism is much deeper than what a black person has achieved. There is a ingrained racism in our culture. I'll admit that I notice myself at times reacting to different races differently. I don't mean to be racist but sometimes it seems to be instinctive. With that been said I can't believe that this pool would do this. I hope they have protesters outside their pool until they are broke and forced to sell.

I abhor racism, I really do, but this story reminds me of what I used to have to put up with when I was on a swim team in elementary school. Our team would meet at a public pool twice a week. Before our meetings, the pool was open to the public. This park/pool was located in a predominantly black neighborhood. At least once a month, our meets would have to be canceled because one of the black kids either shit in the pool or got their junk stuck in a jet. Perhaps this speaks more to poor people than to black people, but when I moved here (predominantly white area) and asked people who swam if they had ever had anything like that happen, they not only hadn't, but were SHOCKED that the black kids would literally shit where they swim (obviously bad parenting is a huge issue here, but black kids typically have black parents).

So maybe the country club just doesn't want to risk shutting down their pretty pool to clean up some shit head's baby ruth bar.

edit: Yes, 15 years later, I'm still miffed lol.

Funny, my wife was just at an upper class pool that had to shutdown because of shit in the pool. I don't think there are any black kids at that pool....

I've a friend who worked over at Disney world. One of the most expensive resorts there, the Boardwalk Inn, would close it's pool at least once a week because someone crapped in it. Cheapest room there is 335 a night, and as you can imagine guests are usually white and rich. Truth is the main "culprits" for that are young kids without or with faulty swim diapers.

Point being, as always, that anecdotal evidence is really no indication of a trend, and that any conclusions are more likely to be based on one's "confirmation bias" than anything.

Is it even legal to refuse people membership clearly over a matter of race? It would surely raise a lot of voices out here. I would sue. This is very wrong. I can't believe this kind of thing still happens in supposedly civilized countries.

Since it is a private club i'm pretty sure it is legal. However, it is also legal for people to picket there business everyday.

O-Positive Program // Donating 500 Units Before Jan 20th

Quote:
The mission of the O-Positive Program is simple...to harness the positive energy derived from the 2008 Presidential Election and stimulate citizen participation in donating a minimum of 500 units of blood during the January 4th to 17th, 2009 time-frame.

Dr. John G. Duesler, Jr. (Team Co-Leader) ** jgduesler@opostiveprogram.org

A simple google of his name brought this up. Checked the area code with Philly, and it reads correctly as in the article. So... the racist was an Obama supporter?

Other articles I have read stated the club has some sort of voting system. Either a board of directors or a voting membership and the people voted to cancel the membership. In fact the person who called them to tell them there membership was canceled said he was overruled in the vote.
