Purge: Skeptical reporters tossed off McCain plane

Is McCain showing his racist tendencies?

Quote:
Chicago Tribune, The (Portland) Oregonian, and the Los Angeles Times, TOLD TO GET OUT... All 3 endorsed Obama

The McCain campaign has decided to heave out three newspapers from its plane for the final days of its blitz across battleground states -- and all three endorsed Sen. Barack Obama for president!

The Chicago Tribune, The (Portland) Oregonian, and the Los Angeles Times have all been told to move out by Sunday to make room for network bigwigs -- and possibly for the inclusion of reporters from two white magazines, Ivory and the White Folks Journal.

Despite pleas from top editors of the three newspapers that have covered the campaign for months at extraordinary cost, the McCain campaign says their reporters -- and possibly others -- will have to vacate their coveted seats so more power players can document the final days of Sen. John McCain's historic campaign.

After a week of quiet but desperate behind-the-scenes negotiations, the reporters of the three papers heard last night that they were definitely off for the final swing. They are already planning how to cover the final days by flying commercial or driving from event to event.

I think he's doing a cost benefit thing. Paying to fly journos who are already against you is pointless when you could use the same money to flatter people wo will write FOR you.

No, but someone here has a grudge, so he make a lame attempt to mimmic Drudge... by flipping the story and taking it one step further by bringing up race (shame on you, otto).

Obama replaced a few reporters from papers that didnt endorse him with national news media for the final push of what is an historic election in the US...there are only so many seats on the plane. (daniel...the press pay their own way).

otto....perhaps you agree with Palin as well when she suggested that the press are somehow threatening her First Amendment rights by reporting on her negative campaigning.
Quote:
HOST: Is the news media doing a good job—are you getting a fair shake, are the Republicans getting a fair shake this year?

PALIN: I don't think they're doing their job when they suggest that calling a candidate out on their record, their plans for this country, and their associations is mean-spirited or negative campaigning. If they convince enough voters that that is negative campaigning, for me to call Barack Obama out on his associations, then I don't know what the future of our country would be in terms of First Amendment rights and our ability to ask questions without fear of attacks by the mainstream media.
I'm much more concerned that a major party candidate for VP has no understanding of the concept of a free press and constitutionally protected speech than a few reporters loosing their seat on a campaign plane in the final days of the campaign.

DC - thanks for the clarrification.

THinking bout it though, I bet the actual cost to the campaign is higher than what the recoup from the seat prices.

otto, where you first went wrong here was when you mistook Drudge for news. Rich White Folks' National Enquirer, is what it is.

McCain probably just wants to have a group of friendly supporters with him during the last days of his historic victory as the first old white guy to be elected president.

Did I get the names flipped on that report? Man, how'd that happen? So it's Obama who is replacing reporters from papers that endorse McCain with reporters from black publications? Not Obama the uniter? Well, he does try to shut down any media source that opposes him. It makes sense.

If it were McCain that replaced reporters of opposing newspapers with representatives of "white" publications, Obama supporters would be screaming racism.

OH MAN... you're so correct, Drudge never reports anything factual... (Monica Lewinsky).

Lame? I know you are but what am I?

Face the facts dc, Obama himself has interjected race throughout this campaign where nothing racial has ever been said by McCain (shame on Obama). So I see how your manufactured outrage is convenient when it suits the cause of double standards. Let's also not forget Black Liberation Theology and Rev Wright, I know most of you want to... but it is a big part of Obama's life. I think we're seeing a glimpse of what to expect from Obama as president. Just keep on swallowing the junkfood of Obama worship... all tasty Twinkies for the "useful idiots".

Yes.... but there wasn't an overt racial element to his decision.

This is a non-story regardless of the candidate. But the yellow journalism of Drudge must fan the flames... he must be just over the moon that a Democrat will be in office again.

A common misconception of racism is the belief that you can invert a situation to show its hypocrisy.

The problem with whiteness is in its crisis of identity. We only know whiteness as it compares to other races, and usually in the context of cultural and social dominance. Until white-centric political and cultural discourse can move beyond such topics as racial purity and disgruntled white men's misguided grievances, we cannot view black journalism and other cultural products as being anything remotely equal. The sames goes for First Nations, Asian, and other groups who have been known to publish from these perspectives.

This is why I view the attempted effect of the OP as fallacious. There is nothing racist with what Obama's team has done. The publications expelled were done so because a) they endorsed McCain, and b) they wanted to make room for other journalists. These journalists were picked because of the significance of this moment in black history.

I don't see how this is racist. The "double standard" doesn't make it racist because all things are not equal here.

to build a little on baraka guru's post above, which i agree with entirely...

one function of the conservative inversion of the conventional understanding of the term "racism" is as a loop which plays back into the basic grid that shapes the identity that conservative discourse imposes/articulates, that of Victim.
in this, the populist-speak of the right plays to a dangerous old game of the sort we saw in all it's grandeur in the context of the reconstruction period (after the american civil war)...what it connects to is a sense of petit-bourgeois being-injured as a function of, say, the idea that african-americans should be given a plot of land and basic equipment (40 acres and a mule) in order to begin working toward economic autonomy...reconstruction demonstrated in the 1870s how this went down amongst the petit-bourgeois conservatives of the period. it's the same move, the same resentment, the same problem: behind all this stuff about racism there is another, "real" victim which is white folk.

it's puerile and ugly and it's only because folk live in such a historical vacuum that there's any novelty or interest to it.

well, folks, had it been clear that the thread was only a troll, it would have been shut down--but it was something other than that-----until the last string of posts. at this point, if it is shut down, it'll happen as a function of the string of posts above.

let's either take the thread in another direction or let it die a quiet death
