Of Ducks and Orcs
This weekend past my son took part in March of the Monsters at our local Warhammer Shop. He entered a monster of his creation and came in second. I don't seem to have a picture of it... but I do have some shots of the other gamer's stuff.

Killing Time and London Leftovers
So I had to meet a friend at UofT... I was early. I was bored. Here are some I took while cooling my heels:

To hell with David Caruso - You didn't get a photo of Emily Procter, did you?
|
No, Caruso was the only "star" there for CSI: Miami. I did get to fly with Dennis Haysbert, the actor who played the president on 24. We stood in line checking in, getting on and off the plane and at security in Munich. I'm sure he was wondering why I was stalking him, but I was thinking the same thing about him.

I get so caught up in your pictures, you never know what/where you're gonna see next! I'd like to be your assistant for a couple of weeks, heh.
But I bet the tulips budding at home are the sweetest shots for you, hmm? |
I actually don't like the colour of the tulips in my back yard (red and yellow). I only like them when they are like the photos above. I do like the ones we have in the front yard (there are pictures of them from last year in this thread).
I don't think an assistant would have much do but follow me around and chat. I am pretty self contained. Any assistance I currently receive doesn't get to travel with me, they get to sit in the office and courier packages... It's a nice thought though. |
Well, I meant mostly that because they are at home, and you are obviously getting to be home while taking those pictures...
See, a great assistant would make herself indespensible. You'd be saying to yourself, "Wow, I never had an assistant who traveled with me before, but now I don't know how I possibly got along without her!" |

I love this thread! I just went through 8 pages of your world while I'm sitting here in Etobicoke watching a sqlplus script load data into an Oracle database.
I'd love to do a TFP get together. The problem is I live near Kingston and only come to Toronto from monday to thursday. We need to meet for Guinness on a wednesday evening sometime. |
rmarshall... most of us are available for drinks on week nights. Just say the word and I am sure you can haul a bunch of us out for Guinness or two.
And thanks for visiting the thread! Cheers |
A visit by Joe
This past weekend I was graced by the illustrious Paddyjoe and Mrs. Joe.
They were in town for a Memorial Day weekend, catching a few baseball games at the Dome. I met up with them for dinner on Sunday night and spent the afternoon on Monday showing them the distillery district, my neighbourhood, the Riverdale Farm and the Necroplis... Lots of pictures were taken, here are a few. I am hoping that Paddyjoe will post some of his when he gets his film developed. We met at the fountain on Front Street. It is right next to the place where we had our group shot for the last Toronto TFP meetup. http://static.flickr.com/72/156449146_6408e9608a_o.jpg Speaking of which, we went for dinner at Hernando's... this time I ate as well as drank... Mrs. Joe snapped this one (only the second shot in this thread not taken by me). http://static.flickr.com/47/156449196_fc5fa715e6_o.jpg This is a coffee roaster located at Balzac's Coffee in the Distillery District. http://static.flickr.com/66/156449232_3504834e81_o.jpg Coffee roaster detail: http://static.flickr.com/50/156449298_d14adecdf4_o.jpg This is a cool sculpture down one of the back alleys... the more you look at the more you can see figures. http://static.flickr.com/54/156449496_276535afd9_o.jpg There were a couple of old and rusting trucks in a back alley: http://static.flickr.com/76/156449555_166eb1648f_o.jpg http://static.flickr.com/77/156449585_af351cd783_o.jpg http://static.flickr.com/55/156449614_59ee6c9b8a_o.jpg An old bridge in the valley http://static.flickr.com/75/156449656_571d73e692_o.jpg a detail on that bridge http://static.flickr.com/74/156449699_e5ba6e9fb4_o.jpg The Toronto Necropolis (City of the Dead) is full of facinating hisory http://static.flickr.com/68/156449766_d9e42fd99d_o.jpg http://static.flickr.com/68/156449822_846a7a8413_o.jpg http://static.flickr.com/48/156449891_1d9cb7da30_o.jpg http://static.flickr.com/55/156449935_e82be1d740_o.jpg http://static.flickr.com/51/156449983_d67e63a372_o.jpg This is the Don River... it really is a cesspool but here it almost looks serene. http://static.flickr.com/45/156450015_c35e499853_o.jpg Look! Trip to Prince Edward County
A week or so ago the kids and I spent the weekend at my Father-in-Law's new cottage in Prince Edward County. I have found a new place to love...
The house is near a place called Roblin's Mill. The remains of the mill are still there. I didn't get pictures of them this time but I did get some shots of the water course that used to power the mill. The falls just seemed to go on and on... http://static.flickr.com/66/168606503_9ea998e212_o.jpg http://static.flickr.com/75/168606593_deb1b4ffa4_o.jpg http://static.flickr.com/48/168606621_8ed4a96eaf_o.jpg http://static.flickr.com/67/168606648_a45b25370e_o.jpg Some attractive Fungi http://static.flickr.com/52/168606554_329a23a54d_o.jpg http://static.flickr.com/74/168606527_ba35695fbb_o.jpg Oh look! The drugs have kicked in. Zero is a manic dog. http://static.flickr.com/49/168606679_cda9a31fb1_o.jpg The kids and I went to the Toronto Islands twice this week. The first visit was last Sunday when we went with three other families. I got G an all-day pass and he managed to have a great time but poor Z barely scratched the surface of her tickets because there were so many other kids pulling her in other directions. I felt bad so I offered to take her later this week... I ended up taking Z and G today. We spent the whole day there. We did some rides in the morning and then spent the rest of the day wandering the eastern islands, discovered a beach we didn't know, wandered the community and walked the quay... It was a great day. Sadly, most of the pictures have the kids in them so, these will seem a little absent of life. Hey Janey... thanks for checking in!
Sadly, my phone died just before my big move (walked into the lake with it in my pocket... I know, I am an idiot). I just received my new phone for work and it is a... wait for it... blackberry. with no camera. I am going to have to wait for my replacement treo to get here... or I am going to have to buy a new camera phone. Tomorrow is Saturday. Maybe I should go shopping... It really is driving me crazy... I keep seeing thing that I want to snap with a camera and don't have the ability to do it... |
No new camera phone yet? bummer.

No girly... I still have no cameraphone and no camera. I do hope to recieve my new Treo soon.

Nature Reserve and Chinese Garden
This is one of the Salvador Dali statues that are all over town for the next couple of months. I think this one is the only one that will be staying.

It is one of only two natural rainforests in an urban setting in the world (the other is in Brazil). We saw monkies a plenty and the odd monitor lizard (sorry no pics of the lizard). I have been wanting to take a picture of one of these for a while. I think it's an ingenious way to carry coffee.
http://static.flickr.com/84/250386560_e29d067f4b.jpg This is a type of kueh called Lapis Sagu. Kueh's are the Malasian or Peranekan version sweets. They are usually made with tapioca or rice flour and coconut... there are tons of different types of kueh. I was going to show you a picture of my favourite one, but I ate it before I remembered to take the shot. :) http://static.flickr.com/100/250386581_12d8aeb5fd.jpg I visited the Bukit Batok Town Park today. It features a small Lake and rocky area called Little Guilin (named after the city of Guilin in China that has similar landscape only larger). This father and son team were fishing. http://static.flickr.com/113/250386814_85d11f3253.jpg Like many big things, a picture doesn't do it justice. It really was quite beautiful. http://static.flickr.com/109/250386752_75ee82789a.jpg I decided to walk through the park and it turned out to be little more than a dirt path that climbed up the hill and came down into a residential neighbourhood on the other side. Halfway up the hill, just off the path, I came across this shrine. http://static.flickr.com/104/250386694_4a42d9c016.jpg Finally, the view from the top. I am thinking about renting a place in the condo in the middle (it's why I came to the area in the first place). While the view is nice, I think it might be too far out of town for my taste. http://static.flickr.com/86/250386638_6807f1efcd.jpg |

Hi Charlatan - the pictures you are posting are great. I love the flavour of the place that you are living in.
|
OMG Char, these are fantastic pictures. I can't believe you're living in such exotic splendor--even more exotic than Canada, which is hard to believe. :D I love the pictures of the pavement (already reposted by flyman), and the colorful floating lotuses (loti?) on the lake.
They thrill and inspire, your pictures. |
Good to see you're back up and running. The monkey on the bridge is priceless. The rock mosaic in the garden is awesome.

I was back in the France again last week, this time I managed to smuggle my wife along for the trip...

I am sure it was once a lovely massive house, now it is a number of smaller, and charming apartments... http://static.flickr.com/115/272288510_55e6a04b23.jpg The town square in Cannes... can you spot the MacDonald's? http://static.flickr.com/97/272288749_35861d0495.jpg A water fountain with Potable Water in Saint Paul de Vence http://static.flickr.com/100/272288973_323b9d8f52.jpg This statue is just outside the main gate of the walled city of Saint Paul de Vence. We came back about three hours later and he was still there... only he was cleaning himself. http://static.flickr.com/95/272289203_9d1854d50f.jpg This cat completely ignored me as I took his picture... He must be completely immured to tourists. http://static.flickr.com/96/272289454_88dde4a19c.jpg I stayed in the Hotel des Ramparts a few years ago... it was cheap and very cool. I recommend it if you are looking for something rustic. http://static.flickr.com/114/272289736_b8c84e116f.jpg A keystone. A very rough translation: "This building was constructed by R. Thanks for sharing again. I wish Toronto had such a commitment to public art.
There was a brief article in the Globe and Mail travel section this weekend about the gentrifying Quays of Singapore: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servl...uery=singapore That restaurant might be a good investment. I'd front you $20CDN, but I want free appetizers for life. :D |
That was a cool article.
It's quite true that Singapore has ignored their riverfront for some time. I remember my first visit here in 1997, Clarke Quay was pretty derelict. Boat Quay has been around for years but it's starting to show its age. I suspect it will get a makeover before long. I can only hope that Toronto's recent forward momentum leads to something beautiful and, more importantly, something that people use. $20!!! I am only a few million off my goal. Keep up the good work! It is still Chinese New Year... the celebrations go on for fifteen days. Today was the Chingay Parade down Orchard Road. Here is a shot I took of the floats marshaling for the dress rehearsal last night. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/155/4...3746fbfe24.jpg Some red leafy things I saw while out for a walk today. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/137/4...7551a9fe4f.jpg One of the many pedestrian bridges in Sinapore. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/166/4...e5a6b29af2.jpg The clouds rolled in and there was a few hours of rain today. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/137/4...918ef9432a.jpg I took this down by the river the other day. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/137/4...efa386b1b8.jpg |

G's Visit to the Lion City
So my son came to Singapore for a visit over March Break. It was a great visit and I took a tonne of photos but many of them have him in them. As a result you will have to settle for these:
This is detail on a wall sculpture that depicts early Singapura. It is located at the bottom of the stairs leading up to Fort Canning (and it is about 100 metres to the west of the fire station I photographed above). http://farm1.static.flickr.com/182/4...3e3f5d3e35.jpg This is a sculpture in the Singapore Botanic Garden http://farm1.static.flickr.com/196/4...6b621198f6.jpg and another one... http://farm1.static.flickr.com/177/4...7f18854e16.jpg A small lizard on a bridge at the Sungei Buloh Wetlands Reserve (it's a mangrove swamp) http://farm1.static.flickr.com/183/4...d7b45b803f.jpg This one was a little larger... http://farm1.static.flickr.com/202/4...4622e134b2.jpg This one was larger still... just about five feet or so. I didn't get as close to this guy as I did to the previous one. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/184/4...2c369beef7.jpg These odd shaped things are part of the cooling system at Clarke Quay. The architect says they are called "whale's tails" but as soon as my son saw them he knew what they looked like... http://farm1.static.flickr.com/190/4...f314a9c595.jpg This is the main entrance to a restaurant/club called Clinic. It's all hospital theme... http://farm1.static.flickr.com/177/4...faa577c866.jpg A bum boat http://farm1.static.flickr.com/174/4...45f646dd_o.jpg This spider was literally larger than the span of my hand... fricken huge! http://farm1.static.flickr.com/168/4...ed1dd871a2.jpg Very odd creatures of the sea, seen at Underwater World http://farm1.static.flickr.com/172/4...c933a4ec67.jpg This was on the island of Palau Ubin. You can see Malaysia across the water... this fence reminds me of something out of Planet of the Apes http://farm1.static.flickr.com/156/4...d29cfef5ed.jpg We visited Haw Par Village... a crazy place made by one of the Tiger Balm Brothers. It features diaramas from Chinese Mythology including the 10 Courts of Hell... great fun for the kids! http://farm1.static.flickr.com/177/4...892bd32e50.jpg Don't forget to pay your debts kids! or else!!! http://farm1.static.flickr.com/171/4...55159c5201.jpg From the Third Court of Hell: Yama -- Ungratefullness, Disrespect to your elders, escape from Prison? wow.
that's fucked up Chuck. i like it. |
It's totally fucked up. The Chinese have some some really strange moral code. From what I've been able to decipher, this Courts of Hell derive from a combination of Taoist and Buddhist teaching.
This list of things that would get you punished was such that there are very few who wouldn't have some sort of terrible punishment done to them. At the end of the ordeals you are given a Tea of Forgetfulness by this really kind old Auntie. Then you forget your last life and the ordeal and go onto your next incarnation. |
yup.......it's a weird world we live in eh?
glad you're bringing the other side of it to us too man. thanks Charlie..........oh did i mention that, that's fucked up?:D |
Hail Charlatan!
Excellent photo-documentation. It makes me realize that I need more giant lizards in my habitat. See you in hell, -GH |
Thanks for sharing these, Charlatan. I'd love to see all those for myself. :)

Time for some new photos.
I was in France a few weeks back. This is a building that is getting renovated. I have seen exterior walls being preserved but never just the top of the wall. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/189/4...75673b49da.jpg A piece of vanilla pie... it wasn't very good. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/210/4...ec909d9872.jpg The Forbidden Lawn... http://farm1.static.flickr.com/214/4...80c6aae539.jpg On the way back from France, I had a five hour layover in Amsterdam so I popped into the city to hang out with some friends who were there for the weekend. Me... http://farm1.static.flickr.com/201/4...1d87607fb0.jpg The streets http://farm1.static.flickr.com/202/4...031ef14a14.jpg The large ramping structure in the centre of the photo is a parking structure for bicycles. There were many (MANY!) bicycles on the streets of Amsterdam. This was in stumbling distance of the main train station so there were more than the average parked. More cities could learn from this example. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/207/4...32f2607f80.jpg I love the LRTs they have in Amsterdam, I am hoping that Toronto's plan for "Transit City" goes forward and we have a fleet of these linking the suburbs to downtown. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/183/4...c845af1fab.jpg The central train station... http://farm1.static.flickr.com/212/4...91d87eee92.jpg Last Sunday, I met up with some friends for some very tasty curry in Little India. Sundays are when most of the imported construction workers get the day off. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/223/4...3febab4a0d.jpg http://farm1.static.flickr.com/212/4...1cd4af.jpg?v=0 |

a trip to Johor Bahru
A few weeks ago I went to Johor Bahru for a wedding. JB is in Malaysia, just across the causeway from Singapore.
The queue to get across the causeway is rather long, but we made good time. The neat thing was the seemingly endless line of motorcycles crossing. http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1056/...da03da0e28.jpg Just outside the Hindu temple in the heart of Johor Bahru are a number of these shops selling garlands to the faithful. http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1133/...a33725eaa0.jpg The Hindu Temple at night http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1212/...1e5365f548.jpg These ladies were just standing around chatting outside the temple. http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1128/...1432c33eb5.jpg A side street in Johor Bahru, lined with street food. http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1229/...063a671e3e.jpg Refraction http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1021/...5b74ed6d1f.jpg These next few were taken at the night market in Danga Bay, JB. There were a bunch of other Canadians who also missed it because they were travelling so we decided that since we were about mid way between Christmas and Thanksgiving we would celebrate Thanksmas (no good Canadian would celebrate Thanksgiving in November...). While I was busy in the kitchen making the feast, my wife was busy making the table look nice. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2325/...64add0fefd.jpg Happy Thanksmas everyone! |

Over Chinese New Year the kids and I went on a few walks. The first part is in the Arab Quarter.

Palau Besar, Malaysia
A couple of weekends ago, my wife and I took a trip to a small island off the coast of Malaysia...

Wow! Amazing pictures Charlatan! I have a camera phone, and there's no way it takes pictures half as nice as the ones you take, you need an extremely steady hand to take a picture, motionless like a statue.
Someday I will travel the world like this, you know, when I'm not a starving student. :P I think my favourite picture is off the crab patterns on the beach....amazing! ^_^ I looked through these pretty fast, but I don't recall seeing any of Japan. Have you ever been there? I'm very interested in taking a trip there someday. :P I confess seeing all of those pictures of Toronto makes me so excited to move there. You'll have to give me the TFP tour so I can know where to get the best coffee, eat the best burgers, etc. :D |
Quote:
I still cry myself to sleep over it. Also, I really, truly hope you're not expecting to see palm trees and monkies in Toronto. |
Quote:
Well damn, I'll need to find another Tdot guide when I move there. :P Haha, Martian, I live two hours from Toronto now. I confess, I haven't been to Toronto in a year or two, but damn, if there's palm trees there now, why didn't I get the memo? |
In regards to the mystery bone, I suspect turtle as well. My five minute Google search has taught me that a turtle's shell is made up of a series of bone plates that are fused together in a manner not unlike the bones of a mammalian skull. The ribs, in turn, are fused to the plates. What we appear to be looking at is one of the plates from a turtle's shell with a portion of the rib attached.
Of course, I could be wrong. I'm no expert in biology, and most of what I do know relates to arthropods (creepy crawlies). |
It couldn't possibly be a turtle. They're so gooey and yummy.

Having only recently found this thread and just now finishing my view of each and every image .. I'm in awe. You live a life most only dream to live small parts of man and you are truly blessed to see and do as much as you have.
The fact that you have an incredible sense of what is actually quite photogenic and appealing to view is even more awe-inspiring, and added to that, the generosity in which you have bestowed upon us, the viewer, in sharing all of these small moments in your incredibly wonderful life thus far. I, for one, thank you kindly for your time spent in sharing all the images and what they mean to you, and hope you continue to do so in the future. The camera upgrade has been a vast improvement for me as well, since the photo quality is greatly improved for my failing vision. |
Hey Guys... thanks for the great comments. I am really glad to hear that you are enjoying the shots.
Settie: Martian is correct, I am no longer living in Toronto, but I can guarantee you that any one of the TFP member from TO can hook you up with a great tour of the city. Khan: I am glad you enjoyed them. I don't post photos as frequently as I once did but I will do my best to keep them coming. |
Your photos of Malaysia are stunning. Oh, how they make me miss the tropics!

So genuinegirly bumped this thread, and I glanced through some of the pictures. Upon doing so I realized that I'd missed the spider picture posted above. I don't know how.
You may have already come across this information, but that little arachnopodian friend of yours is Nephila pilipes, the golden orb-web spider. She also goes by the rather apt name of the giant wood spider, and she spins the largest known webs of any spiders, which may measure as much as 5 feet across. She feeds on large flying arthropods (and occasionally small birds) but is essentially harmless to humans. The male of the species has a body length of about half a centimetre. A picture of the very closely related banana spider, with a male for comparison: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...olden_silk.jpg |
Thanks Martian! I hadn't looked into it but I can say that I have never seen a larger spider so up close and personal. Massive!
I was in Amsterdam last weekend and managed to take a few shots... http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3040/...349f755def.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2094/...eddec9bf4a.jpg About five minutes after this, it was pitching down with wet snow and rain. The first snow I've seen in over a year. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3162/...54517507b6.jpg This was a detail on a bridge near my hotel. I can't help but wonder what history this bridge has seen. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2369/...41b9c7c766.jpg This just made me laugh. I know you can still find this kind of thing but it's always shocking when you do. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2248/...37eb40c600.jpg |
Cannes
One more from my trip a week ago...
Here is the view from my latest hotel room in Cannes. The hotel was only a two-star but it was close to the Palais des Festival (the convention centre). Since joining this new company I have had the greatest difficulty securing decent housing while in Cannes. Anyway, you can see the Cannes train station in the foreground. I think it's a rather ugly building. The only neat thing about it is mural on the side is a recreation of Lumiere Brother's film of a train entering a station, which is one of the first films ever publicly screened. There are many film murals all over town... this is Cannes after all. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2016/...c824d7324c.jpg |

What an interesting shot. |
When I was there in 2002 I stayed in a Days Inn (or some similar chain. My memory is hazy) across from the Train station. Neato.

It's been a while since I posted here.
We took a weekend trip to Hong Kong a few weeks back and here are some of the photos. Hong Kong at night from Kowloon. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2206/...aa8eee66a5.jpg Just out front a of a little flower shop next to my hotel. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2377/...83d7ddd048.jpg Some cool roots in the middle of the city. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2169/...af04e4df50.jpg Some pillow made in the image of one of their politicians. You were invited to cuddle up with them. We did but I can't show you those shots as they have kids in them. http://www.flickr.com/photos/charlatan/3538738324/ I can't post this one but here's the link. In on of the exhibits was an empty room with a coffin in the middle and an sign that invited you to try it out. So I did. I thought my kids might get a kick out of it. Instead this school group descended upon my "corpse". I stayed "dead" until they left. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2327/...23eab83a66.jpg EDIT: I can show this now... We went to Lantau and visited the Big Buddha. This is one of the ladies at his base. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3622/...e0cbb9.jpg?v=0 And another... http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2403/...609d09.jpg?v=0 On the gondola ride to the Buddha... work is never far away with a blackberry. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2478/...142aa4.jpg?v=0 |
Dear Sir,
I don't have permission to see the video of your corpse. I demand satisfaction. Thank you, in advance, for your immediate attention to this matter. Sincerely, your friend... Giant Hamburger, Esq. |
Hail GH
The site was doing something weird to my link. I think I have managed to tame the beast. My corpse is yours to view. Cheers Charlatan PS: I have just noticed that there are a bunch of dead embeds in previous posts. I think this is more TFP shenanigans. I will have to spend some time repairing the links. ---------- Post added at 08:34 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:23 AM ---------- I was just going through my latest pictures and I realize that most of the images I've been taking have my kids in them. Hence the lack of posting here. Here are some shots from the roof of the building in which I work. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2317/...cd1aeb.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3595/...2ae416.jpg?v=0 http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2145/...7e4555c007.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2382/...3db8d28c5c.jpg This is part of the Southern Ridges park. I have a bunch of shots of the rest of the walk but they have my kids in them. You will have to make do with these: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2458/...d5928e607d.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3301/...79f39b9cbd.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2006/...99dc4d7bc0.jpg |
