That's cool. I have fond memories of Stockholm and Helsinki. I spent most of my childhood in Tallinn, which you may know is just a few hours boat ride south of Helsinki. So we traveled north quite often. I still miss the scandinavian summer, it feels like no other. A shame I was to young to absorb the culture or notice all the blonde girls running around but I remember the beautiful cities and the nice people.

And the last I took as we were getting ready to pose together...

I do hope we can hook up some other time and like I said elsewhere, I appreciate their driving all that distance to come and see me.

Ohhh! It was the *coffee* you were taking pictures of, I see. :hmm: Funny, I thought it was something else...

Honestly, I feel all honored and stuff to have made it into your phone camera thread!

I am progressing through all these pages of photos, so far my favs are of Spain and Germany. I especially like the one in Spain with the little cherry tomatoes on the table.
Getting back to viewing and reading!
*hugs*

Ha! That's very funny... no I wasn't snapping shots of "other things". It's the little things that interest me, like coffee cups and tomatoes on the table...

Thanks for checking out the thread though.

At any rate, this is the first time I've seen this thread. Very interesting idea (quick, random pictures of daily yet interesting places and things). The only pictures I seem to have on my phone are shots of the inside of my pocket.

Charlatan 11-06-2005 04:33 PM

The pictures got better because I downloaded a new program for snapping the shots... it makes them clearer.

I too have some lovely shots of my armpit and the like... night shots seem to be the worst (no flash).

Thanks for checking out the thread, I'm never sure if people are seeing any of these shots...

start takin' some more freakin' shots bro.

optik_nerve 11-06-2005 07:45 PM

I might be missing it...but what do you do for a living where you can travel the world?

That is really cool and the pictures are great.

Thanks Flyman...

Santa Monica and Kendo Tournament

3 Attachment(s)
The first shot is one of the last ones I took while I was in Santa Monica... they have a number of leafy dinosaurs that spout water... you've probably seen them in the background in movies and on TV.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115098719354940722"><img src="http://lh4.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx7Ly407TI/AAAAAAAAAhs/RZWNgp1DSJc/s800/0235.jpg" /></a>

The next couple of shots are from the kendo tornament I took part in last Saturday. My son took the pictures. The second one I had to crop out my daughter... she was wishing me good luck.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115098719354940738"><img src="http://lh4.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx7Ly407UI/AAAAAAAAAh0/m2fMqItKFus/s800/0236.jpg" /></a>

More Kendo and Skateboarding

3 Attachment(s)
The next two shots are of my match. You can see me in the first one on the left and you can see my back in the second one as I try to score a point on my opponent (for those who don't read my journal, I was beaten but not terribly).
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115098732239842674"><img src="http://lh3.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx7Mi407XI/AAAAAAAAAiM/Z6VGzM3kt78/s800/0239.jpg" /></a>

After the tornament I had to rush my son off to his skateboarding class... I snapped this without, amazingly, falling on my ass.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115098736534809986"><img src="http://lh4.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx7My407YI/AAAAAAAAAiU/63teALr8abU/s800/0240.jpg" /></a>

WOW, I didn't know you did kendo! I'll have to check out your journal now--amp up the stalking ;P

Must say, you look rather intimidating in your kendo get up.

Supple Cow 11-16-2005 06:15 PM

Nice! Now I want to learn kendo. Karate will have to do for now. :)

Santa Claus Parade

4 Attachment(s)
On Sunday I took my daughter to see her first Santa Claus Parade. The Toronto Santa Claus Parade is the biggest Santa Claus Parade in the world and has been happening in Toronto since 1905.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115098749419711954"><img src="http://lh3.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx7Ni407dI/AAAAAAAAAi8/KUvGaab_Bxw/s800/0245.jpg" /></a>

I am pretty sure she enjoyed herself, eventhough she fell asleep about 2/3 into the parade. I did wake her in time for Santa.

The oddest thing in the parade, was the inclusion of the Falun Dala (or Falun Gong). They had a rather large showing with a procession of drummers.

I can just imagine how this went over with the Chinese embassy.

Toronto recieved its first taste of real winter this week. Snow storms and snow actually staying on the ground... or in this case the roof.

The first shot is of the roof I can see from the men's room at my office. It's the roof of the Club Monaco on Queen Street West, for those who know it.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115098775189515874"><img src="http://lh5.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx7PC407mI/AAAAAAAAAkE/oORUyoeI3No/s800/0254.jpg" /></a>

The next shot is taken from the same spot, different angle. As you can see, the landlord doesn't give this old warehouse space a lot of love. This bathroom is chilly at best.

It is a table top model... each table has one and they work. The whole place has seen better days but the place is clean and the owners are nice.

It has been a while since I posted here... I've been a bit occupied. That said, I have been taking pictures...

The first two I took last week when I went to see the film Syriana. They were taken outside on Bloor Street in front of the Manulife Centre. I was feeling very Christmas-y at the time.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115098779484483202"><img src="http://lh6.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx7PS407oI/AAAAAAAAAkU/XBwemx80tQs/s800/0256.jpg" /></a>

The next two are from my street right after the snowfall... I always love December snowfalls... so much more tolerable than the ones in March.

The third shot is taken on Front Street looking West towards downtown. It shows the Gooderham and Worts building in the middle (it's also called the flat iron building). I like this photo.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115098805254287074"><img src="http://lh4.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx7Qy407uI/AAAAAAAAAlE/TtlijmZSi3U/s800/0262.jpg" /></a>

actually that sounds like a good game thread.. we take a pic of our location, camera phone is good, and try to guess the location. It can't be too difficult, if it is to be truly fair. Who ever guesses, posts the next?

sound good?

Charlatan, the snow looks good on your street. Looks to be near Withrow park?

Charlatan 12-19-2005 11:39 AM

We could start at thread in Canada... the "where am I in Toronto" thread. I think there are enough of us in Toronto that it could be interesting...

I thought that shot was of my street but now that I look at it, I think it's Withrow Avenue looking West from Logan (probably took it while walking my daughter to school).

The animals are sweet. What is it with dogs and getting their picture taken, it's just so...human. Well with the acception of burnadatte's dogs, who are camera whores. The cat doesn't even look embarrassed.

You have a good eye for catching all the best places in town.

I would say that Bloor and Bay is the nicest area to shop. The Yorkville area is also beautiful during this season....now if I could afford anything in those shops... The front street shot is nice! So were you eating at Spring Rolls or Wendy's?

Keep us posted man.

Cheers!

Charlatan 12-19-2005 06:55 PM

Hey guys... thanks for the comments.

Mantus, I agree about Bay and Bloor on all counts. The main reason for going there is for film or Indigo.

...and my wife was eating at Spring Rolls, I was just meeting her there to take the car off her hands.

A Winner's just opened up where the Chapters used to be (on Bloor, just between Bay & Avenue). Much to the chagrin of the proprietors of the tony shops surrounding it. But Winner's has a reputation for being reasonably priced. (!!!).

I love spending time in the Indigo. Once I cought Diana Krall performing there at lunch time, and once I literally bumped into Sophia Loren at the Chapters (she was signing a cook book or something). Talk about seeing an idol!

I spend a huge amount of my time around the Bay-Bloor area. I guess that's what you get for going to UofT, neh?

I love the blue of the sky, and the brightness of the streetlights. So good.

So I took the afternoon off yesterday because I had some Christmas shopping to do and I had to get my parking permit (I ordered it but it never came... it's amazing how a ticket on the windscreen can motivate you to go and get the permit in person).

As a result I had a great afternoon strolling Queen Street in the falling snow. It was quite beautiful and these pictures don't do it justice. I am happy to say that I am finished my Christmas shopping.

The first shot is one of the memorials on University looking north from Queen.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115098822434156338"><img src="http://lh4.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx7Ry407zI/AAAAAAAAAls/jRQJfD2bL7c/s800/0267.jpg" /></a>

The second is of the fence in front of Osgoode Hall. Apparently this fence was originally installed to keep the neighbourhood cows off the hall's lawn.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115098826729123650"><img src="http://lh5.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx7SC4070I/AAAAAAAAAl0/7mBO8cfnbec/s800/0268.jpg" /></a>

The third shot is of the statue of Winston Churchill in front of City Hall. I've always found it odd that we have a statue of this man in such a prominent square...
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115098831024090962"><img src="http://lh6.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx7SS4071I/AAAAAAAAAl8/nIC8Zgf8RvU/s800/0269.jpg" /></a>

The fourth shot is of City Hall... also seen in the Resident Evil movie and as an alien building on Star Trek the next Generation.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115098831024090978"><img src="http://lh6.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx7SS4072I/AAAAAAAAAmE/lBMjVU9lWt4/s800/0270.jpg" /></a>

So my journey along Queen Street continued....

The first shot is of some air vents for the parking garage below City Hall
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115098835319058290"><img src="http://lh3.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx7Si4073I/AAAAAAAAAmM/DyImtDaDi7s/s800/0271.jpg" /></a>

The next two shots are of the model of the City of Toronto in the lobby of City Hall.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115098839614025602"><img src="http://lh4.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx7Sy4074I/AAAAAAAAAmU/aSKBfpsq8vY/s800/0273.jpg" /></a>

The last shot is of the skating rink in Nathan Phillips Square. The Zamboni was cleaning the surface at the time.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115098839614025618"><img src="http://lh4.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx7Sy4075I/AAAAAAAAAmc/9hXCkw_uOHw/s800/0274.jpg" /></a>

The first one is the clock tower on Old City Hall (right next door to City Hall). I still cringe to think that they wanted to tear down this building.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115103843250925490"><img src="http://lh5.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx_2C4077I/AAAAAAAAAmo/I8y3NhFcnWM/s800/0275.jpg" /></a>

The second is the War Monument in front of Old City Hall. It's the place where we have our Rememberance Day ceremonies.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115103847545892802"><img src="http://lh6.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx_2S4078I/AAAAAAAAAmw/V5OGSrVXETA/s800/0276.jpg" /></a>

The third is of the Christmas tree in the Eaton Centre. It's quite spectacular. The ornaments are all made of glass and they have big spot lights on it... it glows.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115103851840860114"><img src="http://lh3.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx_2i4079I/AAAAAAAAAm4/7ZApXwCVF5M/s800/0277.jpg" /></a>

Just before Christmas I made my way from my office up through Chinatown... I was looking for a teapot for my wife for Christmas.

The first is of Jack Skellington and Superman, just through the alley from my office. I actually saw the woman paint Skellington a few days earlier when I went for a coffee.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115103856135827426"><img src="http://lh4.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx_2y407-I/AAAAAAAAAnA/37PF7ML-d7c/s800/0278.jpg" /></a>

The next is of some the Val Kilmer heads that have been popping up around town. I think Cellophanedeity posted a collection of these at another time.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115103860430794738"><img src="http://lh5.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx_3C407_I/AAAAAAAAAnI/18_MIUz5PAE/s800/0279.jpg" /></a>

Finally, this last one is of the famous El Macambo... some of the famous acts that have played here: Rolling Stones, Elvis Costello, U2, Lou Reed, The Police (http://www.elmocambo.ca/)
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115103864725762050"><img src="http://lh6.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx_3S408AI/AAAAAAAAAnQ/h4nlM99Kyqw/s800/0280.jpg" /></a>

As always it was funny hooking up these folks. The White Elephant was cool. I scored the 2006 Guiness Book of World Records. When I showed it to my son last night he was very happy.

A great way to end the year and a great way to start a new one.

Much bigger than avacados... they are about the size of your head.

cellophanedeity 12-31-2005 10:28 AM

They're durians.

I really want to try one. I should march up Spadina and get one in the new year.

Lucifer 12-31-2005 12:15 PM

it's like eating a cream custard, while standing waist deep in an open sewer! If you travel in Indonesia, if you happen to have one in your possession, they won't let you check in to hotels. Bad smell!

noodle 12-31-2005 12:35 PM

Sounds like a delightful experience, durians.

You all look so warm and cozy. Never having been all these wonderful places (or truly experienced the snow/cold), it's a blast living vicariously through you, Charlatan.

Charlatan 12-31-2005 09:13 PM

Durians they are... very stinky but very tasty. They are very popular in Singapore when I am there in December.

Sultana 01-01-2006 07:35 AM

That's it! I'm traveling to Toronto sometime soon! I'm soo soo jealous of you guys, holding a meeting of TFP luminaries. And Toronto looks to have such impressive architecture, too.
I'll need a native guide. :P

Kagami biraki

4 Attachment(s)
This weekend my Kendo dojo celebrated Kagami biraki, which is to mark the opening of the dojo for the new year.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115103907675435218"><img src="http://lh4.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx_5y408NI/AAAAAAAAAo4/2bKmULu3i2s/s800/0293.jpg" /></a>

Part of the celebration involves making and eating Mochi. OUr sensei is a trained chef (he owns a couple of restaurants). He makes mochi in the traditional way, by pounding the sweet rice into a sort of dough.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115103911970402530"><img src="http://lh5.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx_6C408OI/AAAAAAAAApE/qXXqtkTPTtU/s800/0294.jpg" /></a>

The ones I ate were filled with a sweet bean mixture...
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115103916265369842"><img src="http://lh6.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx_6S408PI/AAAAAAAAApM/VxS2xfD3Z6k/s800/0295.jpg" /></a>

Traditionally this sort of thing would be eaten before going into battle... because the rice is compressed you can fit a lot more rice into a very small package... when combined with a filling, they can give you a good dose of carbs and protien... sort of like a power bar.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115103920560337154"><img src="http://lh3.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx_6i408QI/AAAAAAAAApU/IPLLsHrmlx4/s800/0296.jpg" /></a>

So I was in Las Vegas for 24 hours yesterday... I managed to take a few pictures.

The first shot is the view from my hotel room on the 17th floor of the Tropicana.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115103920560337170"><img src="http://lh3.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx_6i408RI/AAAAAAAAApc/v1FXBfmStL8/s800/0297.jpg" /></a>

The next three were taken on my walk from my hotel to the Mandalay Bay... The Mandalay Bay is supposed to be in a southeast Asian theme. I found it ironic that I was going there to meet someone from Singapore.

On Valentine's Day someone chalked hearts around all the posts for locking your bicycle. There were also a ton of pink hearts chalked all over Queen Street West.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115103976394912274"><img src="http://lh4.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx_9y408hI/AAAAAAAAArc/KGlyORM1TtA/s800/0313.jpg" /></a>

The next is a clock that wasn't telling the right time.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115103980689879586"><img src="http://lh5.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx_-C408iI/AAAAAAAAArk/u2Bvsv19LZY/s800/0314.jpg" /></a>

Finally, as I was waiting for the streetcar, standing in snow with the cold blowing across the valley I spied this indicator that Spring is on the way.

I love the juxtaposition of the "Canada Blooms" shot! Do you ever attend that event?

Charlatan 02-17-2006 11:38 AM

It's not really my sort of thing. I did buy tickets for my Stepmother-in-law and wife so they could go. They had a great time, apparently.

Fly 02-17-2006 05:39 PM

Alexander Keith's eh Charley......good beer.

That's me, Feb 21, reflected in my ice filled wheelbarrow. What's a wheelbarrow used for this time of year? Firewood. Why is it full of water? Out of firewood. Why? Damn cold. 64 degrees one day then down to 20 a couple days later. And not a flake of snow this season!

West Drayton. Seemingly in the middle of nowhere, but actually quite close to Heathrow. This is close to where my job interview was held.

Guiness and a London pub. Within a few hours of making into town, this was me enjoying some of Ireland's finest (I had some bangers and mash as well).

The next few are from my trip to Borough Market (it's on the south side of the Thames near London Bridge). Neil's Dairy is the best place for cheese. Apparently they export to North America.

We had dinner at a restaurant named Fish! (it's in Borough Market). I thought this was a clever way of putting chocolate on my coffee.

I love the tube. I love the tunnels. We are off to the V&A for fun.

Apparetnly you cannot get Clamato juice in the UK. We lugged six jugs of the stuff over the Atlantic so everyone could enjoy Bloody Caesars at the reception. Ghastly stuff.

There were many more but the camera just didn't do them very well. The best of the wierd was this one of fresh meat at the Borough Market (rabbit, doe and duck) and of the market itself.

right on Charley you lucky bastard.

can't wait for more man.

snowy 02-28-2006 06:03 AM

Looks like a great time. And if you ever get to Berkeley, CA, they have a cheese shop like that there. Simply amazing.

doodlebird 02-28-2006 07:55 PM

i'm guessing that the neil's dairy cheese is sold in the US under the label "neil's yard" - perhaps they're the same in canada?

sadly, the varieties available are greatly limited. i've never seen st. gall or doddington.

Charlatan 03-01-2006 07:48 AM

Apparently they do not sell cheese to individuals in the US but do sell to these US retailers:

Amonkie visits Toronto

So this weekend we were graced with another visit from Amonkie. This time there was no Rochester Ferry so she drove the 2.5 hours to Toronto from Rochester.

When she arrived on Saturday, I was able to take her to my local diner (featured in many pictures above).

http://static.flickr.com/37/10871964...be6f64.jpg?v=0

I can't post too many shots from this visit as they have pictures of my kids. I will post a link to this one because it looks like my son is about to make an obscene gesture at Amonkie sitting across the table from him.

Amonkie, finished eating, and the aftermath of our shared plate of homefries:

That evening we made our way to a local pub, Dora Keogh. Here is Aberkok and another of Amonkie drinking some Alexander Keith's India Pale Ale and a little Fresnelly for good measure.
