The world through my Phone...
1 Attachment(s)
My office just issued me a brand spankin' new Treo 600 and one of the neat things on this PDA/Phone is a camera...
It is a pretty lousy camera as digital camera's go but I have had fun taking pictures of people and objects as seen by me. I am hoping to make this a daily "as seen/scene by me" kind of thing... Here is my first one. This is a co-worker of mine busy at work... she is in Seattle this week and I am stuck in my office. http://lh5.google.com/StevenMurphy00.../s400/0001.jpg |

My trip on the street car a couple of mornings ago... When my car was broken into and all my stuff stolen, they also got the keys to my Vespa... it was the only set I had. With no way to unlock the scooter I was resigned to take the streetcar to work.
http://lh6.google.com/StevenMurphy00.../s800/0002.jpg |
Public transportation can be in a pain in the ass. Or at least it is for me in the mornings when i don't wanna walk all the way across campus to go not pay attention in class.

I just arrived at the office and was getting my head together when I snapped this... It is the window ledge right beside my desk... Apparently today will be sunny and warm (29C). Me, I get to spend it indoors stressing about my trip to Munich next week...

Great pics, Charlatan. It's fun to see a slice of your life. Keep us in the loop.
(PS I kinda miss TO) |

I had a hell of a time the last couple of days... My Vespa got a flat while I was going 70km/h in traffic... I managed to keep it upright and got off the road... got the tire fixed and was driving home when it poppped again... bloody hell. Stupidly, I didn't get any pictures...
(I'm still getting used to the idea that I have a camera all the time...) What I have is a cool shot of my son I took while we were walking to breakfast this morning... I really liked the effect I got. http://lh4.google.com/StevenMurphy00.../s800/0004.jpg |
that flat must have been one hell of a trip, but now it's all over (and it all turned out ok) you've got one hell of a memory! i kinda envy you... all the adrenaline...
pics are cool, especially the last one. |
Charlatan, I really hate to ask you this, but has your son been watching a video tape with a dead chick in a well? :)
Cool effect on the picture, I agree. |

fhqwhgads, why yes he has... about a week ago...
I am extremely busy today getting ready for a sales trip to Munich and a sales market in Cannes. Way too much prep work but a successful trip is all about the prep... My Mom came over on the weekend and we took my daughter out for a popsicle while we had coffee... What is it about the last peice of popsicle that it always falls off... http://lh5.google.com/StevenMurphy00.../s800/0005.jpg |

Well, my flight to Munich yesterday was rather bonus... I was at the gate, speaking to my wife on the phone when I heard my name being called over the loudspeakers... Turns out they'd oversold the flight and needed to make room in steerage... Can you say UPGRADE? Nothing beats a free upgrade.
So far I am stuck in Unterfoering... a suburb of Munich. Most of my meetings are out here and there were no rooms available downtown during Octoberfest. Here is a picture of the shoe shine machine in the stairwell... I want one of these for my house... http://lh3.google.com/StevenMurphy00.../s800/0006.jpg |

Finally made it downtown to marienplatsz today... had a very good beer in the shadow of the Golden Virgin Mary column. I also found a really cool vintage clothing store where I bought an army surplus parka from my son and a very sweet leather jacket for myself.
Here is my cab driver's arm as I was racing back to the hotel for dinner with a client... http://lh5.google.com/StevenMurphy00.../s800/0007.jpg |

Ok... I've been way too busy to update this so I will now engage in a bit of flood to get caught up...

The cool thing about this phone is that when I am shopping for things for my family I can fire off an email with a picture attached and get my wife's OK... Here is one of a pair of boots I bought for my daughter...

The market was really busy... we are selling the Michael Jackson film that debuted on VH1 in August and I didn't have time for lunch all week. On Thursday I made a point of getting out of the Palais and having an hour to myself... I wandered a bit and then had a sandwich in a little cafe on the Rue d'Antibes... which is still underconstruction...

On the last night in town, I was by myself... my colleagues had flown out earlier in the day and I was to fly out at 6am the next morning... That's what I get for booking my flight so late - no available flights on the day I want to leave.
So I treated myself to a dinner in my absolute favourite restaurant in all of Cannes... it is a little place on the Suquet called Gavroche... if you are ever there, I recommend it highly. http://lh3.google.com/StevenMurphy00.../s800/0015.jpg http://lh5.google.com/StevenMurphy00.../s800/0016.jpg |

Here are a couple shots I took from the 22nd floor of the hotel I stayed in whille in Jakarta last week... Hotel ALiLa. The pictures don't really do justice to the sprawling chaos that is Jakarta...

Here are some shots of the highway salesmen... I am stuck in traffic, hell it's all traffic in Jakarta, on a highway. It would the equivalent of an Interstate in the US or a 400 series highway here in Toronto.
Suddenly there are men walking between the traffic selling snacks, newspapers, water, pictures of the new president, etc. It makes perfect sense but was just odd when I realized I was on a highway... http://lh3.google.com/StevenMurphy00.../s800/0021.jpg http://lh3.google.com/StevenMurphy00.../s800/0022.jpg |

Apparently it snowed while I was away, but that doesn't really count...
It snowed this Saturday past though and that, to me, is the first snow of the season! http://lh5.google.com/StevenMurphy00.../s800/0024.jpg I took these as I walked home from Kendo practice, the park is just a couple blocks from my house... In the last shot you can see some enterprising young types taking advantage of the snow to partake in some excellent tobogganing! http://lh6.google.com/StevenMurphy00.../s800/0025.jpg http://lh3.google.com/StevenMurphy00.../s800/0026.jpg |

This is my gargoyle... there are many gargoyles like him but this one is mine... (and he's got a dusting of snow to boot!)
http://lh3.google.com/StevenMurphy00.../s800/0027.jpg |
Hey I experienced that snow storm this past weekend! Driving through it from New Market back to Kitchner wasn't much fun though :(
I love this series... |
Driving in the snow is never (well rarely) fun. But there is just something magical about the first snow of the season. Unfortunately almost all of it has melted now... Wow, Newmarket... you were so close, just a 40 minute drive down the 404 to Toronto...

So I didn't have time to update this over the holidays so here are few new shots... sorry no glamorous locations just Toronto and the like...
My last post above was on Dec 21 and it was a sunny day outside my window... what a difference a couple days can make. Here is the same view from about the same time of day on Dec 23... We had a nasty dump of snow the day before and then on the 23rd it was freezing rain and rain... http://lh4.google.com/StevenMurphy00.../s800/0029.jpg |
2 Attachment(s)
Getting to work on the 23rd was a real drag. My wife told me just to call in but I figured I should just get off my ass and get into work.
After trudging through the rain (and managing to keep my feet beneath me) I finally made it to the streetcar stop and had to wait almost a half an hour for a car (usually at rush hour it is less and 5 mins). The statue of Dr. Sun-Yat-Sen was looking particulaly chilly and lonely that morning... usually there are scores of old chinese men and women doing exercises at the time of the morning... http://lh5.google.com/StevenMurphy00.../s800/0030.jpg When the car finally came it was full. Halfway to work it was short turned and I to get off and catch the next car... that in turn was short turned... took me almost 1.5 hours to make what usually takes 40 to 50 minutes. http://lh6.google.com/StevenMurphy00.../s800/0031.jpg |
1 Attachment(s)
On the 24th I dutifully went into work... for a half day. The rain had stopped but it had left an icy coating over everthing... including the car's windshield.
Just outside my front door I was greeted by this beautiful view... The picture doesn't quite capture the magic of the sunrise shining through the ice but I think you get the idea... http://lh6.google.com/StevenMurphy00.../s800/0032.jpg |

On the Sunday morning after Christmas we drove up to the stable where my wife teaches... The white pony's name is Chucky... Chucky is normally a very nice pony but he was kind of ornery that morning because he had to stay in while everyone else got to go out and play...
http://lh3.google.com/StevenMurphy00.../s800/0033.jpg My daughter loves horses. I told her to pet Chucky so I could snap a shot... Just as I clicked the shutter, Chucky bit her head. I have it on film but can't post it here... http://lh3.google.com/StevenMurphy00.../s800/0034.jpg She was OK and just had a little Fred Flintstone bump on her bean... it went down in an hour or so... She had a lot of fun telling the story over... and over... and over in only the way a 2 year old can do it. |

On New Year's Day, my wife gave me the day off. I went downtown and caught a film... The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.
I had to kill a little time before the movie so I wandered around and took a few shots and just thought about the year ahead... http://lh4.google.com/StevenMurphy00.../s800/0035.jpg |
1 Attachment(s)
I took this one this morning as I was waiting for the streetcar... This is from Riverdale park looking west to downtown Toronto... the lens on this camera really isn't all that great... it makes the core look further away than it is...
It does have a spooky quality to it though. http://lh5.google.com/StevenMurphy00.../s800/0036.jpg |

My phone has not been able to synch with my computer... but I got it fixed...
A few weeks ago I took a Friday off work and my famliy and I went for a walk in the Don Valley (which is just a few blocks from my house). I wrote about it in my journal HERE This my wife... http://lh5.google.com/StevenMurphy00.../s800/0037.jpg |

I had to actually drive last night and stumbled on a movie set. They had blocked off Eastern Avenue from Carlaw running West... They had strung christmas lights all up and down the street and erected huge lighting arrays... The one shot I took looking up at one of the massive lights high up on a boom (a good four or five stories up)... The second as I drove through the intersection...

As it is quite warm in Texas, I am freezing vicariously through your images.
I love your ongoing documentation, please continue. |
I love the idea of seeing the world through the eyes of a phone, that made the pictures just that much more interesting.
|
Great series Charlie. Sorry it took me so long to stumble upon it, but I'm certainly glad I did.
Please, carry on.......... |
That stable looks so nice... I can almost hear the barn sounds and smell it as well.
And Chucky was not a happy little pony that day, that's pretty clear ;) |
Thanks guys... and yes, poor Chucky was very grumpy.

hrm, never noticed the colors they produce and how unbalanced they can be. nice, idea, im expecting someone will try to get and MFA with a camera phone here one of these days!

These were taken from the streetcar one stop short of my stop. For those in Toronto, it is at Broadview and Gerrard. This is Chinatown East. It is a mix of Vietnamese, Chinese from the north of China and Chinese from the south. The immigrants apparently came in different waves...
This intersection is facinating to me. The NW corner has a public library and the Don Jail (Toronto's municiple jail). The NE corner has a bank. The SW corner has a Vietnamese restaurant and the SE corner has a Chinese grocery store... The hustle and bustle of this mini Chinatown is just part of what makes Toronto a cool place to be. <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115098002095399266"><img src="http://lh5.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx6iC404WI/AAAAAAAAAJ8/sZhMM3GC7YI/s800/0046.jpg" /></a> <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115098006390366578"><img src="http://lh6.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx6iS404XI/AAAAAAAAAKE/u1T2pPqjChk/s800/0047.jpg" /></a> |

We went to the Toronto Zoo last Friday (Good Friday). It was my daughter's frist trip and she loved it...
The best thing about going to the zoo this time of year is that the weather is warm enough for us to wander around comfortably but also cool enough to get some action out the animals. In the summer they tend to do a lot more lying around in the heat... Here is the Siberian Tiger. Largest cat in the world. <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115098014980301186"><img src="http://lh4.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx6iy404YI/AAAAAAAAAKM/qOBPXdRKx-c/s800/0048.jpg" /></a> |

right on man.........you just made me wanna hit our zoo......i haven't been to the zoo in a couple of years.........
|
I love the zoo... haven't been in a few years. Since we moved downtown it is easier to go to the Royal Ontario Museum, the Science Centre and the Art Gallery of Ontario... the zoo is a bit of a hike.
My son and I used to go all the time when he was little. Now that my daughter is here... I suppose we should try to go more. |

Yes! Spring is finally in the air... our trip to the zoo was just the thin edge of the wedge. Today the temp is supposed to go up to +15C.
As I was waiting for the streetcar this morning I noticed a sure sign of the warm weather, the chinese ladies who exercise in the park everymorning are back! I posted a shot of the park above, covered in snow, the statue of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen standing alone... Well this morning he had company. It is a little hard to see as this is a phone camera and it makes things in the middle distance look like they are really far away... In the foreground you can see the shadow of the bus shelter and the shadow of another transit rider waiting with me... in the back ground you can just make out the statue and some figures around the base... In reality they were only about 100 feet or so from me... <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115098049340039666"><img src="http://lh4.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx6ky404fI/AAAAAAAAALE/Aiqp4OVWPr8/s800/0055.jpg" /></a> |

My new office is located in the "entertainment district" of the city... By day the converted warehouse spaces are filled with various new media, entertainment, fashion, retail types... By night it is all night clubs and parties...
I am just south of Queen Street West (for those who know Toronto) and a block or two away from the CityTV/Much Music/Bravo/Space...etc. Building (which is good because they license and commission a lot of programming from us). One of the things about moving here, is that I am getting a fresh look at a neighbourhood I have known for ages (I used to party in the area and worked a The Gap one block north of my new office). I don't know how many times I have driven by this building but it seems like this is the first time I've really seen it... The picture doesn't do it's clean lines and bold base justice... I am sure it is hell to work in (heating, cooling, etc. being antiquated) but it sure looks nice. <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115098053635006978"><img src="http://lh5.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx6lC404gI/AAAAAAAAALM/pLODnx-ty14/s800/0056.jpg" /></a> |

My new company is also a production company and our new show, has just launched on Food Network Canada and will be on HGTV Canada in the Fall. We also just got an order for 13 more episodes for the fall... I am off to sell it around the world next week.
We find out if, HGTV and Fine Living US pick it up later this week... This is from the party we had last night for the launch. I too have a camera phone now. I just need to figure out a way to interface it with my computer. I'm not sure whether to go with a standard USB hookup (I have to get a special cable) or get a Bluetooth dealie that plugs into my USB port. What do you use? |

The cheese was awesome... just awesome. I had to move to the other end of the room so I wouldn't just stand there eating it... I was standing waiting for the streetcar yesterday morning and saw one of the truest signs of spring... a streetsweeper. Clearing away the detritus of winter... <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115098075109843522"><img src="http://lh6.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx6mS404kI/AAAAAAAAALs/LeT9pJfBDgk/s800/0060.jpg" /></a> |

All of these are f/amazing, but this one really caught my eye. Would you mind if I painted some of your pictures, Charl? |
Pinkie... I'd love it... as long as I can see the results and maybe keep the painting (if you can part with it...). By the way, that really is one of my favourite places in all of Cannes... I will be eating there next week!

I have just returned from another week long trip to the south of France...
As I mentioned in the Best/Worst Airports thread, I am a big fan of the new Toronto airport. Here is a quick shot I took as I was checking in... <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115098079404810834"><img src="http://lh3.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx6mi404lI/AAAAAAAAAL0/kJXkRJmXVD0/s800/0061.jpg" /></a> |

While the new airport is underconstruction many flights to Europe load at the infield terminal... you have to take a bus to there and then wait for your flight. They finally opened a Lounge there a couple weeks before which makes the wait a little more bearable... it isn't as nice as the one in the main terminal but it is comfortable enough...
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115098083699778146"><img src="http://lh4.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx6my404mI/AAAAAAAAAL8/WEAu8CB29Fo/s800/0062.jpg" /></a> |

I had a connection in Frankfurt and had to move from one side of the building to the other... to do so, you have to take the tunnel. They have a nice light show and soothing sounds... It just seems like it will never end but eventually it does.

The layover in Frankfurt was a three hours (longer than normal for me but that's what you get when you book as late as I did).
I spent much of that time relaxing in the Lounge closest to my gate... drinking the tasty MultiVitamin drink they have on tap... and preparing my notes for the week... <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115098096584680082"><img src="http://lh3.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx6ni404pI/AAAAAAAAAMU/7xlOMbbKKqU/s800/0065.jpg" /></a> |

Flying from Frankfurt to Nice is usually when I get to sleep... it is only an hour and a half trip but I am usually exhausted... unfortunately I had a grumpy old man behind me who kept banging on my chair (as if it is my fault the seats are so close together...)
The one benefit was that I was awake to see the Alps... I forgot to take pics of the Mount Blanc and the more snowy peaks... this is more around the area where it starts to blend into the Med. <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115098096584680098"><img src="http://lh3.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx6ni404qI/AAAAAAAAAMc/UXYtSE_nM0I/s800/0066.jpg" /></a> <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115098100879647410"><img src="http://lh4.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx6ny404rI/AAAAAAAAAMk/MurimRVDWJM/s800/0067.jpg" /></a> |

The first is a shot of the steps where during the Cannes Film Festival you usually see the famous... they use it as the entrance with the red carpet. At this market we use another entrance.

I have been taking the subway a lot this week because I have been attending the Hot Docs FIlm Festival... it is a documentaryfilm festival that takes place here in Toronto every spring.
I have spent the last five day (two more to go) screening films and meeting with international braodcasters... I think I have screened something like 40 to 50 films so far (most are about an hour long but some I only watch 10 minutes or so before I more on to the next one as it is clearly a) a bad film or b) not right for my needs. Anyway... here are a couple of shots from the subway platform at Broadview Station... <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115098139534353234"><img src="http://lh5.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx6qC4041I/AAAAAAAAAN0/2fNrRL1wQbE/s800/0076.jpg" /></a> <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Temp/photo?authkey=UjR5dOgSIIc#5115098143829320546"><img src="http://lh6.google.com/StevenMurphy001/Rvx6qS4042I/AAAAAAAAAN8/BplpBVKhZxM/s800/0077.jpg" /></a> |

The delgates lounge and screening room for the Doc Shop (a place where I can screen films that were submitted to the festival but not selected) are located in Victoria College on the University of Toronto campus... It is one of the many lovely buildings to be found on this urban campus. Apparently it was used as a military headquarters during WWII... I think I appeciate this campus so much because the buildings on my University's campus (Carleton University in Ottawa) were so damn ugly...

Friday was a pretty relaxed day... I went into work early and worked at the office until about noon and then headed up to the Festival site for some screeings... When I got to the subway station, Osgoode, all of the ads had been replaced with pictures of monkeys and apes. There was no explaination, just pictures.

When I got to the festival site, I discovered that most of the screening machines were booked... I managed to squeeze in a couple hours of films and then went out and... went to see a movie. Can you guess what I saw?
