Queen and Cream together again back on tour...

Some of you may remember me talking about Queen coming together to do a concert with "The Voice" Paul Rodgers of Bad Company and Free from when I posted about it being in "The Hotseat" well I picked up the Rolling Stone yesterday and they have more info about it. The show will feature Brian May and Rodger Taylor of Queen but John Deacon chose not to participate unfortunately. The tour will begin on March 19th with an AIDS benefit in South Africa. After that they plan spring arena dates in Europe and it also says probably fall shows in the US as well. Rodgers is now rehearsing with the guys and studying the Queen catalog to see which songs best suit his rough voice. It says songs like "We Will Rock You!" and "Fat Bottomed Girls" are likely choices I wouldn't mind hearin him try "Tie Your Mother Down" and "I'm In Love With My Car" myself...maybe even go out on a limb and try "Born To Be Kings" . May says "Paul was a real hero to Freddie. And a big influence - you can hear it on the early stuff." Holy crap..It says another possibility is a version of Bohemian Rhapsody that would see Rodgers trade vocals with a video image of Mercury. Rodgers says "It's very challenging, because Freddie was a great, great frontman." When someone as notorious as Paul Rodgers is saying that about you, you know you really had something. Thank God for Freddie Mercury R.I.P.

I also read that the original lineup of CREAM will be getting back together for a short tour as well! They're planning only 4 shows in May at London's Royal Albert Hall. It also says that a DVD and possible live album are likely to follow from this small tour. It does say that a full tour is unlikely though . It will more than likely just be the four shows and thats it.

Thats all I've come across for now.

Yup...looks like the closest we in the states will get to being there is if they really do release the live DVD

I love Queen, but doubt I will attend this show if they come to Dallas. Not only is there no Freddie, but no John Deacon. And I can't really see Paul Rodgers singing Queen songs. He has an amazing voice, but I don't think it would sound right.

And I'm bummed that there's no plans for a full Cream tour. I would actually consider a trip to London just to see a show. That could be magical.

Considering I was born a generation too late to see ANY Queen performance when they were all there I'll take just about anything I can get. If they come to Texas I'm gonna try and make it. Bad Company is one of my favorite bands as well and to hear them play songs from both groups catalog? I wouldn't wanna miss that. I hope they release a DVD of that one as well if they don't come anywhere near me or if they do and I can't go.

I too don't know about Paul Rodgers. His early stuff and Bad Company I liked but with Jimmy Page in The Firm, I thought he was really flat, (not theoretically) and I think that really hindered Jimmy from taking off to the next step after Zep.

I just can't see Rodgers doing "You Take My Breath Away", or "Bicycle Races." If I had to pick one singer, and as gay as it sounds (no reference but,...) I would prefer George Michaels. At the very least, Gary Cherone. Theatrics like Mercury's sold Queen, the last two could pull it off. Paul Rodgers? We'll see.

It's been 20 years since Eric Clapton was able to produce a lick that approaches the sound of his quality output. I'm gonna go out on a limb and predict that the Cream reunion will include a series of unnamed players in the background to take up the slack.

I'd respectfully disagree. It's been some time since he put out an album that was worth a shit, but he's still incredible live. I've seen him several times in the last decade or so. 4 shows in the UK is probably pushing the limit for how long these guys can get along.

This thread needs a sound file of Freddie Mercury in it. And OFKU0 suggesting George Michael doesn't sound gay. Man has an incredible voice. I'm further reminded of this when I listen his rendition of Elton John and Bernie Taupin's "Tonight" on the Two Rooms album. Plus it's not like its such a big deal to worry about sounding gay cause you want a gay man to replace a frontman you love who was also gay. Well regardless they didn't pick George or Gary they picked Paul..who also has an amazing voice. I gotta respect that they went out on a limb and asked Paul to do this rather than just a carbon copy of Freddie..I'm sure they could have found that if they wanted to. May is obviously trying to take a different approach to their catalog..and I'm sure they wouldn't have asked Paul if he was unable to rise to the occasion. It's gonna be different...but listening to Rodgers voice in Bad Companies songs all the time and listening to songs like Bad Company, Live For The Music, Rock & Roll Fantasy, Running With The Pack, Ready For Love, etc. I'm sure he'll be able to hold his own...Freddie is a hard act for ANYONE to follow I don't care who they are. His voice was unique not just good. No one ever really wants to give anyone a chance eh? Clapton's gonna suck he hasn't played good in years granted he's arguably the best in the world....Paul Rodgers can't sing Queen just because he's not Freddie...Give em a chance then criticise

Anybody that thinks Eric Clapton has lost his edge and doesn't have his riffs - must painfully have his head up shoved straight up his ass.

E.C. is better than ever. He just doesn't have to enter a pissing contest, thank you very much. I have seen most of his (annual) tours over the last 20 years and he just keeps getting better.

Yeah but they're all in their 60s now. The spectre of death will mellow them out a little bit. I never would have thought they'd get back together at all.

Ain't no way that Queen + Paul Rodgers will make it over to the U.S. Queen hadn't even toured the U.S. since 1982. If they came over, I'd definitely go. I don't love Paul Rodgers but I don't hate him either. Like others have mentioned, George Michael would have been a great choice - but more power to Brian May and Roger Taylor for going ahead with their lives. I'm sure Freddie would have wanted them to do whatever would make them money.

As for no John Deacon...I don't really care too much. He was a competent bass player but nothing spectacular. He's made it clear he wants nothing to do with Queen anymore - more power to him.

I think I'll pass on seeing Queen Damn brilliant musicians. They show what kind of good things can happen when for music majors get together. But, even though I appreciate them, I don't really go out of my way to hear them.

Cream, on the other hand. I wish they were playing in the US.

I heard about that and was planning on going(if not only for sunshine of your love, which I love) although I guess it will either cost ridiculous amounts or be sold out when I go to get a ticket. Oh well, will have to hope for a DVD if I miss it
