Actually, it is almost all free, 'cause they don't bother to clear the samples, so they can't sell it.

There was a Bastard Pop night at Newcastle University where people brought there own creations and had them played. It wass a superb night out with a great atmosphere, no-one seemed to take it too seriously.

I took my home made version of Block Rockin' Beats (Chemical Brothers) & White Lines (Grandmaster Flash) and got it played there.

Went down quite well, if a dare say so myself.

Whereas my other creation: Tell It To My Heart (Taylor Dane) & Everybody Needs a 303 (Fatboy Slim) was a little bit nose-bleed inducing for the masses.

Damn this reminds me...last year (I think) I heard a mashup of Röyksopp's "Eple" and some other tune that goes:

"If at first you don't succeed, pick yourself up and try again."

Anyone know what I'm talking about? Or even better, anyone have it?

So, is there a difference between a bootleg, a mashup, and bastard pop, or all those all synonyms?

Where is the line drawn between a bootleg and a remix?

Where is the line drawn between a bootleg and collage (such as Negativland)?

I would say a 'Bastard Pop' tune would have to be based on a record that has had definite chart success, such as Kelis' Milkshake or any Justin Timberlake song.

My definition of a 'Mash-Up' would be a vocal track with several instrumentals played under it in short segments over the course of the vocals.

'Bootleg' was originally the name given to pirate copies of vinyl records. I've got no idea what this term means in relation to the topic but it's there and it's too late to go back now.

To do a 'Remix' used to involve getting all of the separate elements of an original tune on a multi-track mixing desk and tweaking the levels of certain parts and changing the structure of the song. Now with computers anyone can do a remix using a bit of software.

p.s. Nice links redlemon.

p.p.s. Jaded - I'll see what I can do for you. It's a big file so it'll need to be compressed before I can e-mail it.

mashup is the switching of vocal and instrumental tracks, as i understand it. bastard pop seems a synonym.
at first, it was mostly about beat matching--and of course reframing both elements (vocals, instrumentals). one of the earlier examples i can remember involved madonna and sonic youth...danger mouse's thing using jz and the beatles (from about 6 months ago) was more about looping and independent production---so the instrumental segments that are used are getting shorter and the producers more aggressive, its still a mashup.

collages are different in that continuity is not kept across the elements, and something different is made from juxtapositions. the old school precursors are almost all collage, some closer to mashup than others.

there are groups that work in between--people like us (vicki bennet) for example.

the remix thing comes out of dub. same instrumental as the track that included vocals--as jwoody said above--reggae tunes would be recorded with a house band doing well-known rhythms in one session---the vocals (usually a trio in the day) were record at a seperate time. the vocals would be done around the rhythm, but without necessarily hearing the exact backing track. producers starting with folk like lee perry, king tubby, niney the observer, etc. started issuing the dubtracks as seperate things. dick hebdige's book "cut-n-mix" is good on this.

ps--if you wouldnt mind, jwoody, please bounce along a version of your track to me as well. i'd be interested in hearing it. thanks....

Eclectic Method have done some mash-up videos to go with the songs. Definitely at higher end of the quality scale.

I'm watching Hey Ya (Outkast) / Paperback Writer (The Beatles) - well worth a download if you have the inclination.

If you already subscribed to "the confidential" like I told you to, this isn't news to you.

For the rest of you, the new Prodigy album has been mashed-up as ALWAYS OUTSIDERS, NEVER OUTDONE:
Quote:
Always Outsiders, Never Outdone is about evolving just that little bit further...

This online album features unofficial remixes and mash-ups by some of the UK's best bootleggers, giving you a chance to hear the Prodigy's new album as you've never heard it before. The album is free to download but if you enjoy it and wish to keep it you are encouraged to make a donation to our nominated charities.
Individual tracks are available for direct download, or get the entire album as a bittorrent on that site as well.

I haven't listed yet, bittorrenting it as we speak...

I'm triple-posting the end of this thread, but what the heck. I just saw on BoingBoing a new concept album mashup, and it is getting good reviews: the kleptones invite you to a night at the hip-hopera (all Queen mashups). The sample origins have been researched out on another site. I'm grabbing the torrent right now, haven't heard it yet.

I made a few 'bastard' attempts when I was younger. I made one of those Eminem vs Eye of the Tiger remixes floating around Kazaa, but then some guy took it, edited it halfway through the track, and said it was played out, lol.

Ha! Never let it be said that I'm not true to my word.

Better late than never, here's "Block Rockin' White Lines" or "White Rockin' Beats" or "White Blockin' Whatever"

You'll have to jump through a few hoops to get the download, it's 6.7MB large and I can't guarantee it'll be worth it. Did I mention the pop-ups? No? Well here goes nothin.

Firefox cleared through the popups with no issue. So, I'm listening to it, and it flows nicely; unfortunately, I don't know the 'pella, and a mashup only really works for a listener when they know all the component parts. I think I'll keep it anyway. You didn't put in the ID3 tags; what DJ name do you prefer (I'm anal about proper tags)?

and

White Lines - by Grandmaster Flash, Melle Mel and the Furious Five (can't believe you haven't heard it!)

This came up on my iPod on the drive in to work today, I hadn't heard it in a while. Right around 2:40, there's a section where you hear tight funk horns over an industrial style beat. I really like that. I want someone to go start an industrial ska band, so I can hear more of it.

Oops, looks like I missed your last one. Ah well, I don't really know Darkness either.

That's part where I usually say, "ssh! this is the best bit..."

Industrial Ska? I reckon some of my most recent bastardizations would fit under that category.

It was a Michael Jackson song at a time when he was in court. Since he was found not guilty, the song's lost it's edge.

One of my DJ mates played one of my tunes in a nightclub a couple of weeks ago. I haven't felt so awkward in my life. I've ordered him never to play it again whilst I'm present.

I'm in the middle of working on a brand new 60 minute mega-mix. Some of it I'm especially proud of - other parts need a lot more work. I'll post some up here for anyone who's interested.
