Your favorite music store, and why?
Some like Best Buy or the other big-box places, others like local indie stores, others prefer Amazon or iTunes. Back in Santa Barbara, there was this great store called Morninglory Music. Two, actually, one downtown and one in Isla Vista. Here in SF, I have Amoeba Music and Streetlight Records, among others. I went over to Amoeba today and got some Probot, Tool, Massive Attack and Perfect Circle.
I like them because they have a huge selection of both new and used, knowledgeable staff, and other things like posters, DVDs and VHS. I had trouble finding Probot, went to the info desk, and they told me it was likely filed under Foo Fighters, and it was. I just said it was "A Dave Grohl project," and the guy knew where it would probably be. What I'm really curious about are the locally-owned, independent, brick-and-mortar shops you've been going to for years but aren't known outside of your area.

There's a local chain here in the Boston area, Newbury Comics that's pretty cool, lot's of indy/underground stuff, plus all the related items - DVD's, posters, collectibles, just general weird, interesting stuff. Prices aren't too bad either.

Local Music store, called Record Time. Simply because it has a nice used selection with prices generally being either $8 or $6. Otherwise, I go for the used vendors sections at half.com and amazon.com.

Actually, for the CDs, I go to a place called Record & Tape Trader, and get them used there. If I can't find it there, there's two other used places I check, then Tower, then Best Buy. Finally, if I still want it, I go to deepdiscountcd.com.

Zia Record Exchange in Phoenix and Tucson. They carry new and high quality used and I can usually find whatever I want. I have been buying music from them since the mid 1980's.

I buy mostly used CDs at Amoeba. God I love that place, pretty much brand new albums for like ~$7. I think Rolling Stone rated it the best CD store in America or something along those lines.

There was a great store in Toledo called Boogie Records. I would have attached the link, but yesterday was the final day of operations. It was the best Toledo had to offer. In Bowling Green Oh, there's a place called Mad Hatters and it's pretty good.

The only music store I know of that's close at all and sells unedited music (bye-bye Wal-Mart) is Sam Goody's, so there's my favorite.

local record store called djangos because they have the best cheapo bin with some good finds for under $4 in pretty mint condition.
also, i find them to have the best jazz section than other record stores around the area. they may not have the best section in general but they ALSO have the best used VHS section and that's fine by me

There are a couple of cd stores here in Chapel Hill here that are pretty good.
Generally I dont buy music in stores though--I wont buy anything on an RIAA label, and most stores dont carry all that much indie music. Quote:

I usually buy my stuff my Borders, as they have hard to find and imported items. Used CD's and vinyl I buy from Mammoth Music, my local record shop in town. Mammoth reminds me of the movie 'Empire Records'

Although I've never been there, I've heard great things about a place in Phoenix called Metal Devastation. They specialize in underground metal with an emphasis on black metal. I don't understand people who choose to shop at Sam Goody, Warehouse, Virgin, etc. Those mall stores have been fucking people over with their jacked up prices for decades. I won't even step foot in those places. Fuck, you can order the shit from Amazon and have it shipped to you for less.. |

If you are an ASU student, there was a record store located in the bottom floor of the student union called Hoodlom's (it used to be a Zia's). I graduated in 2001 so I have no idea if it's still there, but the owners were cool. They were small so they didn't have the best selection however they were more than happy to order anything you want. Prices were about the same as Zia (much less than the mall stores)

Hello, good evening, and bollocks.
Location: near DC

My favorite shop has got to be One Drop Records on Florida Ave. in Washington DC!! They get reggae records straight from Jamaica almost every week, and got some real hard to find shit that you can't really get anywhere else. Another great reggae store in DC is called Action Pack, on a nice weekend when the weather's good they will set up the speakers and play music for the whole neighborhood, you can hear the reggae blasting for blocks!
City Lights, and Arboria Records in State College, PA are two other great music shops. They sell new & used records, tapes and CDs and have a lot of hard-to-find stuff too. I've been going there since I was about 14 years old.... |

About the only place around here that I end up buying CD's from is Lou's down in Leucadia. Haven't paid over $10 for a cd there yet, and they have a huge selection or all types of music. A lot of independent label stuff, and a whole used music store right next door.
