Your favorite music store, and why?

Some like Best Buy or the other big-box places, others like local indie stores, others prefer Amazon or iTunes. Back in Santa Barbara, there was this great store called Morninglory Music. Two, actually, one downtown and one in Isla Vista. Here in SF, I have Amoeba Music and Streetlight Records, among others. I went over to Amoeba today and got some Probot, Tool, Massive Attack and Perfect Circle.

I like them because they have a huge selection of both new and used, knowledgeable staff, and other things like posters, DVDs and VHS. I had trouble finding Probot, went to the info desk, and they told me it was likely filed under Foo Fighters, and it was. I just said it was "A Dave Grohl project," and the guy knew where it would probably be.

What I'm really curious about are the locally-owned, independent, brick-and-mortar shops you've been going to for years but aren't known outside of your area.

There's a local chain here in the Boston area, Newbury Comics that's pretty cool, lot's of indy/underground stuff, plus all the related items - DVD's, posters, collectibles, just general weird, interesting stuff. Prices aren't too bad either.

FoolThemAll 02-28-2004 10:46 PM

Local Music store, called Record Time. Simply because it has a nice used selection with prices generally being either $8 or $6. Otherwise, I go for the used vendors sections at half.com and amazon.com.

i love pet sounds here... they sell records and the people who work there are very knowlegeable... everything is also cheep, because it is all second hand (unless u order something in) although it is all in good condition which is good.

Nancy 02-29-2004 09:28 AM

I buy my stuff in Amadeuz... they always got some weird and very rare CD's! ;)

NoLa 02-29-2004 09:31 AM

Mega Virgin Records (or something along those lines)- New Olreans
Its huge, I could spend hours in there

Vintage Vinyl-St.Louis
They always have obscure cds, records, etc. Plus you can find cheaper used cds.

GuttersnipeXL 02-29-2004 01:31 PM

Last Vestage in Albany...Old vinyl, bootlegs and used CDS....
Other than that I get stuff of off ebay, mostly old hard to find vinyl stuff.

02-29-2004 07:14 PM

Budget. It's right by the hub of all Starbucks where we go in our area. You can order in anything you want if they don't have it. New CD at Budget- $14.00. Hell no would I ever pay $20 for a CD. That's outrageous.

Tophat665 02-29-2004 08:14 PM

Kazaa. Because it's Free!

Actually, for the CDs, I go to a place called Record & Tape Trader, and get them used there. If I can't find it there, there's two other used places I check, then Tower, then Best Buy. Finally, if I still want it, I go to deepdiscountcd.com.

mml 02-29-2004 10:11 PM

Zia Record Exchange in Phoenix and Tucson. They carry new and high quality used and I can usually find whatever I want. I have been buying music from them since the mid 1980's.

I buy mostly used CDs at Amoeba. God I love that place, pretty much brand new albums for like ~$7. I think Rolling Stone rated it the best CD store in America or something along those lines.

ToolBag 03-01-2004 12:20 PM

Chicago represent!!! RECKLESS RECORDS!!! best music store ive ever been to, an orgasmic array of joyness and all loving good awesome times! ROCK!!!

cleanx 03-01-2004 12:28 PM

Amoeba Records is the best, they have a huge used section and you can find any artist there

the chain of record and tape traders in maryland. good used selection and new releases are generally $13 or below.

There was a great store in Toledo called Boogie Records. I would have attached the link, but yesterday was the final day of operations. It was the best Toledo had to offer. In Bowling Green Oh, there's a place called Mad Hatters and it's pretty good.

Yeh, but it seems to be an acquired taste. The songs really rise or fall on the skills of the singer, and if his style isn't to your taste, then you probably won't like that track. Some of it was, IMHO, kinda dreadful, but there were some bright spots. I think I'm gonna hang onto it and give it some more listens. Fantasic drum work, and the lead guitarist from Soundgarden (whose name escapes me at the moment) lends some blistering licks here and there.

H12 03-01-2004 10:12 PM

The only music store I know of that's close at all and sells unedited music (bye-bye Wal-Mart) is Sam Goody's, so there's my favorite.

paulaboots 03-02-2004 11:14 AM

my best place 2 buy my music ,i got 2 say is woolworths , they are always having good deals in the store ,its unreal. if ur anything like me ,i luv my ,videos, d.v.d ., and c.d. they have good offers all the time, my advice is cheak woolys out. u might find its ok.:D

anti fishstick 03-02-2004 02:01 PM

local record store called djangos because they have the best cheapo bin with some good finds for under $4 in pretty mint condition.

also, i find them to have the best jazz section than other record stores around the area. they may not have the best section in general but they ALSO have the best used VHS section and that's fine by me :D

sailor 03-02-2004 07:50 PM

There are a couple of cd stores here in Chapel Hill here that are pretty good.

Generally I dont buy music in stores though--I wont buy anything on an RIAA label, and most stores dont carry all that much indie music.

Jazz = awesome. Especially when its live :D

phlox 03-03-2004 09:20 PM

Paul's or Brave New World in the burgh. But usually Paul's, because the guys that work in Brave New World intimidate me. I feel like there will be a punk rock quiz after I buy my records.

wordssmith22 03-03-2004 09:26 PM

the only good store within reasonable distance is tower records. and they serve my music needs pretty well too, if not slightly overpriced. other than that, i buy online from amazon

Great places. PDQ in tucson also comes up with some great hard o find stuff, or at least it did when I lived there.

Melllvar 03-22-2004 12:28 PM

I usually buy my stuff my Borders, as they have hard to find and imported items. Used CD's and vinyl I buy from Mammoth Music, my local record shop in town. Mammoth reminds me of the movie 'Empire Records'

Zia's is the fucking best. They always have a great selection of metal.

Although I've never been there, I've heard great things about a place in Phoenix called Metal Devastation. They specialize in underground metal with an emphasis on black metal.

I don't understand people who choose to shop at Sam Goody, Warehouse, Virgin, etc. Those mall stores have been fucking people over with their jacked up prices for decades. I won't even step foot in those places. Fuck, you can order the shit from Amazon and have it shipped to you for less..

While I am not much of a Metal fan, I just heard from a friend who is, about Metal Devastation, and he said it is unbelievable.

I am sooooo happy to see so many Zia fans.

If you are in AZ (and I guess anywhere else) and want to find rare or hard to find stuff, I recommend Tracks In Wax.

Whoa, whoa, people actually still buy music? That's a new one on me.

doomdoom 03-23-2004 12:33 PM

local music stores are the best and sometimes the worst places. they are the best when you get an owner that really loves music and they are the worst when you get the owners that are into music because of all the drugs

kutulu 03-23-2004 01:11 PM

If you are an ASU student, there was a record store located in the bottom floor of the student union called Hoodlom's (it used to be a Zia's). I graduated in 2001 so I have no idea if it's still there, but the owners were cool. They were small so they didn't have the best selection however they were more than happy to order anything you want. Prices were about the same as Zia (much less than the mall stores)

PenguinBoy 03-27-2004 07:54 PM

Theres a little store close to where i live called sound exchange, tehy have lots of great used music for cheap, some hard to find cds as well. its great.

Fearless_Hyena 03-28-2004 01:40 PM

My favorite shop has got to be One Drop Records on Florida Ave. in Washington DC!! They get reggae records straight from Jamaica almost every week, and got some real hard to find shit that you can't really get anywhere else. Another great reggae store in DC is called Action Pack, on a nice weekend when the weather's good they will set up the speakers and play music for the whole neighborhood, you can hear the reggae blasting for blocks! :D

City Lights, and Arboria Records in State College, PA are two other great music shops. They sell new & used records, tapes and CDs and have a lot of hard-to-find stuff too. I've been going there since I was about 14 years old....

drag0nmanes 03-29-2004 11:28 AM

About the only place around here that I end up buying CD's from is Lou's down in Leucadia. Haven't paid over $10 for a cd there yet, and they have a huge selection or all types of music. A lot of independent label stuff, and a whole used music store right next door.
