Most Depressing Song Ever?

This was one of my best threads ever on the music forum... so feel free to share depressing tunes here.

Just about anything by these artists gets me down:

Nine Inch Nails

Townes Van Zandt

Thom Parrott

Radiohead

Anyone who can think of any more, feel free to share.

Everybody Hurts by REM and Johnny Cash's version of Hurt
For some reason Johnny's version is much more depressing than NIN's version...

Porkchop 04-19-2003 09:48 AM

Cracker -- This is the Golden Age
----------------------------------
This is the Golden Age
It's hard to imagine
with the way I feel today
that this is the Golden Age
The Golden Age

Somewhere I failed
Somewhere I lost you
in a black crowd of crows
and shiny things
I can't remember
This is the Golden Age
This is the Golden Age
The Golden Age
It seems like I'm high
but baby I'm crawling
in the unbearable days
I threw away
but I should have savored
The flaxen light
off of the dying wheat
Your rye whiskey mouth
and your dandelion teeth
This is the Golden Age
This is the Golden Age
This is the Golden Age

----------------------------

For various reasons it always gets me low like no other... but in a good way.

oane 04-19-2003 10:29 AM

The Rose by Betty Midler.

Dunno why.

bbb 04-19-2003 11:08 AM

I always found the smith's to be quite dpressing.

"It was dark as I drove the point hope and it suddenly struck me that I just might die with a smile on my face after all."

or

" I smoke cause I'm hoping for an early death and I need something to cling to."

ChipX86 04-19-2003 02:36 PM

I'd like to nominate the whole Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence album (actually, it's 2 CDs) from Dream Theater. Great stuff. Nice and depressing, but not overly so, if that makes sense.

Jeff 04-19-2003 05:08 PM

Stairway to heaven

Back when I was a teenager, Two people I know were killed by a drunk driver..And they played that song at the funeral, I hate it now.

Xixox 04-20-2003 02:03 AM

Harry Chapin - Cats in the Cradle
Makes me think of how fast life has gone & all the times I didn't spend time with my Dad before he died.

Ben Folds - Still Fighting It
Same as above. But the added twinge that makes me feel like I'm a disappointment to my parents, or that they maybe felt like they were a disappointment to me. I sing loudly with it in my car, hoping Dad can hear me.

Everybody knows, it sucks to grow up.
... and you're so much... like me... I'm sorry...

"Ladies and Gentleman We Are Floating in Space" by Spiritualized

I don't know about depressing, but it makes me tear up if I'm in a down mood, often I feel better when it's over.

Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space

All I want in life's a little bit of love
To take the pain away
Getting strong today
A giant step each day
All I want in life's a little bit of love
To take the pain away
Getting strong today
A giamt step each day
I've been told
Only fools rush in
Only fools rush in
But I don't believe
I don't believe
I could still fall in love with you

I will love you till I die
And I will love you all the time
So please put your sweet hand in mine
And float in space and drift in time
All the time until I die
We'll float in space, just you and I
And I will love you till I die
And I will love you all the time
So please put your sweet hand in mine
And float in space and drift in time
All the time until I die
We'll float in space, just you and I

Baby I love you today
I guess that's what you want
And I don't know where we are all going
Life don't get stranger than this
It is what it is
And I don't know where we are all going

I will love you till I die
And I will love you all the time
Everything happens today
And we're out here in space
And I don't know where we are all going
Baby I love you today
I guess that's what you want
And I don't know where we are all going

YUP. Song is awesome but sad. You can add And I Love You So by him too. That song is depressing as hell too.

Doc_34465 04-20-2003 10:32 PM

Candlebox - Far Behind

And Pearljams Black at close second.

Though Stainds rendition was a bit more depressing.

I'll agree that Vincent by Don McLean was pretty sad to.

zmbabwe 04-20-2003 11:00 PM

woah, this is the most depressing thread ever. Johnny Cash doing "Hurt" really brings me down.

labob 04-20-2003 11:18 PM

1)The Smiths: Last night I dreamt that somebody loved me

2)The SmithsThere is a light that never goes out

3)Ryan Adams: Empty baseball park

Don't know if these are the most depressing songs ever, but they sure as hell bummed me out (and continue to as well)

Great music listed on this thread

flammatappa 04-20-2003 11:44 PM

Cash's version of Hurt is more depressing for me because he doesn't hit a single note the entire song and I want to kill myself when I hear it.

Junkmale78 04-21-2003 12:26 AM

I've got one to beat you all out.......

Eric Carmen(not to be confused with Eric Cartman) "All By Myself"

get ready to f'ing cry when u hear it.......

MahlerIsGod 04-21-2003 12:46 AM

Junkmale78,
That song would be better if Eric Cartman were singing (see his Styx cover of Sail Away). That song could be described in one word: kitsch.

dopeman 04-21-2003 02:11 AM

The Smiths/ Morrisey are quite depressing.

scarebearjinx 04-22-2003 10:35 PM

the most depressing song i have ever heard was christian. it's by kathy trocoli (i think thats how you spell it). it was about this mother-to-be, i think a teen, and how she was going to get an abortion. thing about the song was that it was being sung from the baby's point of veiw, like the baby was singing it. how it could hear her talking about getting rid of it and everything. it was touching and really sad. it made alot of us cry.

strife 04-23-2003 12:30 AM

Ok, in no particular order, and I am going to repeat some just for my own thought process...

Can't think of the band, but the song Suicidal Dreamer
Gary Jules - Mad World
Dashboard Confessional - The Best Deceptions
Eric Clapton - Tears in Heaven (Unplugged)
Ben Folds Five - Brick
A Perfect Circle - Three Libras
Coldplay - Careful Where You Stand
Matchbox Twenty - Bed of Lies
Guster - Rainy Day

I have more, I'll be back...

cinnles 04-23-2003 05:20 AM

How is always with me, always with you depressing? :)

I rkn Something I can never have by nine inch nails is rather depressing.

Can't decide whether I like the recent version on "still" better than the original though...

Anyone?

hiredgun 04-23-2003 08:14 AM

Nine Inch Nails - "Hurt" takes the cake.

A Perfect Circle - 3 Libras, also.

thumper 04-23-2003 11:42 AM

The *most* depressing song? Hmmm good question...

I know most of you may not be into country music, but I would have to say the most depressing thing I have ever heard was:

Little Jimmy Dickens - "Raggedy Ann"

It's a song in which a man is talking to an old Raggedy Ann doll as he walks up the hill to his childs grave. Raggedy Ann was the childs doll. As he talks to the doll, he explains the death of the child and his wife, and keeps apologizing that this will be the last time he talks to the doll, for he is about to go off and die himself. It's more a form of emotional torture than a song. So, for me it takes the cake.

dvorak 04-23-2003 01:32 PM

Eleanor Rigby depresses me every time. So does Precious Things by Tori Amos. And... well, there are a lot more. I was really into depressing music for a long time, and I guess I still am.

Look into COIL (Astral Disaster is pretty good for it, so is the song "Who'll Fall?").

I think it has to deal with my frame of mind...It is a wonderful and beautiful song, and it saddens me when I listen to it, it strikes something in me, that I seem to lack, I guess. Kind of like the song John Mayer - Comfortable. The song itself isn't really depressing, it's the way my mind processess it. I want to feel the way the music is being portrayed in Always with me, Always with you.

I know all that may sound really wierd, and I'm sorry if I didn't answer your question... I guess to sum it up: The song makes me feel like I am missing something, yet I don't know what it is.

It is one of my favorites though. I am going to add Comfortable by John Mayer to the list as well.

/me is a weird kid.

Listening to Pink Floyd's The Wall from beginning to end is the most depressing thing I've ever heard (as far as music goes).

hexdump 04-27-2003 04:46 PM

Ani DiFranco - Grey

the sky is grey, the sand is grey, and the ocean is grey
and i feel right at home in this stunning monochrome, alone in my way

i smoke and i drink, and every time i blink i have a tiny dream
but as bad as i am i'm proud of the fact that i'm worse than i seem

what kind of paradise am i looking for?
i've got everything i want and still i want more
maybe some tiny shiny key will wash up on the shore

you walk through my walls like a ghost on tv, you penetrate me
and my little pink heart is on its little brown raft floating out to sea
and what can i say but i'm wired this way and you're wired to me
and what can i do but wallow in you unintentionally

what kind of paradise am i looking for?
i've got everything i want and still i want more
maybe some tiny shiny key will wash up on the shore

regretfully, i guess i've only got three simple things to say:
why me?
why this now?
why this way?
with overtones ringing and undertows pulling away
under a sky that is grey, on sand that is grey, by an ocean that's grey

what kind of paradise am i looking for?
i've got everything i want and still i want more
maybe some tiny shiny key will wash up on the shore
