When I didn't "get" grindcore (I think that's what it is?) but wanted to understand what she saw/heard in it, my daughter and I sat down and looked at the lyrics together. This one really gets to me.

El Pinata De La Muerte
The Number 12 Looks Like You

Remember my face dirty man?
Smack me with a frying pan, maybe this will all come back to you.
You gave me a fever a long time ago, I never got better.
Remember me yet?
This is where I celebrate my recovery.
I'll find creative ways to strip your body parts and use them as weapons of torture, my mother will be proud.
Maybe you can appreciate this saw created with your nails, use it to cut off your lips and stuff them in your nostrils, empty my bladder into your dirty mouth.
Gargle my fluid.
Hum you and old tune while we dismember your legs.
Hung upside down by your waist... I blindfold myself with the skin of your thigh, ...spin 5 times... and use your leg to swing at you like a pinata.
You explode the remedy all over me.
My fever is gone and so are you.

A sure sign of getting old was listening to Roy Clark sing "When I Was Young" at Mickey Mantle's funeral.

For me, the saddest song is How To Save a Life by The Fray. I don't know why, it just stirs up really sad memories inside of me for some reason :(.

Come Around - Rhett Miller.

that song will insta depress you.

Hell throw in some Ride by Cary Brothers

guyy 03-12-2008 07:47 PM

"He loved him madly", Miles Davis. No words, but it's all about wrenching loss.

"I'm so lonesome i could cry" is another downer.

Some of those romantic lieder are pretty sad, too. "Wir wandelten" does it to me, although just going by the lyrics it's not really one of the sadder ones.

Wyodiver33 03-12-2008 09:18 PM

Fade to Black - Metallica

QuasiMondo 03-13-2008 07:10 AM

Pink Floyd - Time

And you run, and you run to catch up to the sun, but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath, and one day closer to death.

Nine Inch Nails - Right Where It Belongs

Derwood 05-11-2008 09:16 AM

read this:

Quote:

In the early afternoon of January 1, 2006, Kathryn, Bryan, Stella, and Ruby Harvey, a family of four, were found beaten, slashed and bound with electrical cord and tape in the basement of their burning house in the Woodland Heights district of Richmond, Virginia.

Kathryn Harvey, 39, was the co-owner of a popular local toy shop called "World of Mirth" in the Carytown district of Richmond, and the half-sister of actor Steven Culp. Bryan Harvey, 49, was an indie musician of note, a former member of House of Freaks, a two-man college-rock band in Richmond. Their daughters Stella and Ruby were 9 and 4, respectively. Bryan and Kathryn died of blunt-force trauma to the head, Stella of smoke inhalation and blunt-force trauma to the head, and Ruby of stab wounds to her back, one of which punctured her lung.

speshul-k 05-25-2008 03:55 PM

I actually find the Cash version of 'Hurt' quite uplifting and powerful for some reason. It is the NIN version which as the crescendo builds and the cadence in Trent's voice grows stronger that the entire song crashes into an array of feedback, cymbals and various other synth effects.

Building into nothing but eventual silence.

The pinnacle point in the song for me actually.

"Last Kiss" by Pearl Jam/Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers

Oh, where oh where can my baby be?
The Lord took her away from me
She's gone to heaven, so I got to be good
So I can see my baby when I leave this world.

We were out on a date in my daddy's car
We hadn't driven very far
There in the road, up straight ahead
A car was stalled, the engine was dead
I couldn't stop, so I swerved to the right
I'll never forget the sound that night
The screamin' tires, the bustin' glass
The painful scream that I heard last.

Oh, where oh where can my baby be?
The Lord took her away from me
She's gone to heaven, so I got to be good
So I can see my baby when I leave this world.

When I woke up, the rain was pourin' down
There were people standing all around
Something warm rollin' through my eyes
But somehow I found my baby that night
I lifted her head, she looked at me and said
"Hold me darling just a little while."
I held her close, I kissed her our last kiss
I found the love that I knew I would miss
But now she's gone, even though I hold her tight
I lost my love, my life that night.

Oh, where oh where can my baby be?
The Lord took her away from me
She's gone to heaven, so I got to be good
So I can see my baby when I leave this world.
Oooh~ ooooh~

I have to say, the original made me laugh every time I heard it. At the time it came out, there were several "My lover died" sappy songs (Leader of the Pack, etc), even one where the girl runs back to get his ring and gets hit by a train. *rolls eyes*

The only time a song made me actually start to cry was when I watched k.d. lang sing "Crying" as a tribute to the recently departed Roy Orbison, but I think that was also because my sister's husband had also just died. But, man, she really did a fantastic job on bringing the emotion into that song.

It just makes me cry whenever I hear it...

Pretty much anything by Secondhand Serenade, but that gets me the most

I always cry when I hear Johnny Cash's cover of Nine Inch Nails' - Hurt.

For a few reasons. It was played at a friend's funeral.

Funny I should see this thread now. I just came home after being gone for a few months and was presented with a minute chore; file my old vinyl.
I was looking at some platters to see if they were warped or scratched and then broke out an unopened present from last year, a USB turntable.
(I'm not too cheap to buy new, vinyl is still primo)

I thought, hmm what would Steely Dan sound like in an MP3. I realized the old song Deacon Blues is a very depressing song.

"I'll learn to work the saxophone, I'll play just what I feel
Drink scotch whisky all night long, And die behind the wheel
They got a name for the winners in the world, I want a name when I lose
They call Alabama the Crimson Tide, call me Deacon Blues"

Most of the song is like 'I'm in a depressed state and I'm just settling in to permnant depression."

Depressing for Duke grads, Duke fans, and just depressing. Of course thats why it's called blues huh?
Of course if I graduated from a Lib school like Bard I might be depressed too. It might be a graduation requirement.
(Lib as in liberal not liberal arts or Libertarian)

Eric Claptons singing Knocking on Heavens door. But I think the really sad song is Tears in heaven that he wrote for his son. That song always makes me cry. I know I'm a big baby

Fast Car by Tracy Chapman - probably the only song that ever brought me tears

Banks of the Ohio - by many people...my version is by The Carter Family

Quote:

I asked my love to take a walk
Just a little ways with me
And as we walked we would talk
All about our wedding day

(chorus)
And only say that you'll be mine
In no other's arms entwined
Down beside where the waters flow
On the banks of the Ohio

I asked her if she'd marry me
And my wife forever be
She only turned her head away
And had no other words to say

(chorus)

I plunged a knife into her breast
And told her she was going to rest
She cried "Oh Willy, don't murder me
I'm not prepared for eternity."

I took her by her golden curls
I drug her down to the river-side
And I there threw her into drown
And I watched her as she floated down

(chorus)

And going home between twelve and one
I cried "Lord, what have I've done?"
I've killed the girl I love
Because she would not marry me

(chorus)
Pretty fucking depressing, eh?

Dear Claudia by SouthFM
-----

dear claudia, you should try not to sleep with your best friends boyfriend
you've come so far since that time when you let your first boy in
and you do it so carelessly
as if you had no self esteem
a victim of apathy but you don't care what people say about you
i will let you in before you break yourself

its true that you like to sleep around
enjoy it with your backside on the ground
but you should know that its not your fault
your father killed himself

dear claudia, you leave pieces of you in each bed you lay in
and when you're done there will be somebody else wearing your skin
I will lay your fears right here next to mine
and when we close our eyes we'll be entwined
little claudia
you must find another
you must forgive yourself
cause its not your fault I killed myself
little claudia
I will forgive you

Not Tonight by Adelayda
----
Do you remember all the things you said to me
You made them sound so simple, but they're just not that easy
You swear that I could be someone to hold you for all time
Baby, not tonight

And I tried to tell you now, but I can't find those words
And I tried to show you how, but that's pain you don't deserve
And you're sitting there and asking if you can come inside
Baby, not tonight

And take a look at what we've become
A tragedy, but I can't find that love
That we started with so long ago
And I know this isn't right
It's the last time I'll be kissing you
So goodnight, goodnight

This is gonna hurt me now much more than it hurts you
A sad 'ol cliche is now slowly turning true
You can tell something's wrong and ask can we talk awhile
Baby, not tonight

Take a look at what we've become
A tragedy, but I can't find that love
That we started with so long ago
And I know this isn't right
It's the last time I'll be kissing you
So goodnight, goodnight, Yeah

We're driving home and you can see this in my eyes
Yours start to tear up, you see straight through my disguise
And you're leaning so much closer now, holding on so tight
It's the last time I'll be kissing you
So goodnight, goodnight
Goodnight, goodnight
Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah

Cry by Angie Aparo
-----
If I had just one tear runnin' down your cheek,
maybe I could cope, maybe
I'd get some sleep.
If I had just one moment at your expense,
maybe all my misery,
It would be well spent. Yeah....

Chorus:
Could you cry a little? Lie just a little?
Pretend that you're feeling a little more pain.
I gave, now I'm wanting something in return.
So cry just a little for me.

If your love could be caged, honey,
I would hold the key,
And conceal it underneath the pile
of lies you handed me.
[ Find more Lyrics on ANGIE APARO "CRY" Lyrics ]
And you'd hunt in those lies.
They'd be all you'd ever find.
That'd be all you'll have to know
for me to be fine. Yeah...

Chorus:
And you'd cry a little, die just a little.
And maybe I'll feel just a little less pain.
I gave, now I'm wanting something in return.
So cry just a little for me.

Give it up baby....whimper would be fine.
Some kind of clue that you're doing time.
Some kind of heartache, honey, give it
a try.. I don't want pity
I just want what is mine. Yeah.

Could you cry a little? Lie just a little?
Pretend that you're feeling a little more pain.
I gave, now I'm wanting something in return.
So cry just a little for me
yeah....could you cry a little for me?
yeah...cry...a little....for me.

Black Orchid by Blue October
-----
Have you ever been so lonely,
No one there to hold?
Pull me in or disown me,
And then climb inside.
My arms are open wide.
Have a look inside.

It is not that I am scared to learn,
Why I'm empty inside.
hold my hand or show some concern,
If I live or die.
My eyes are open wide.
Help me look inside.

I hear the water drip from the faucet.
It's sweetly falling in tune.
I'm gently closing the closet.
I fall to the floor,
and crawl to my room.
The thought of ending it soon...
Just let me sleep in my room.

Hear me cry! cry! cry!
I hear a knock at the front door.
Don't come in!
I try to look at you
But I can't stop shaking.
Leave me alone. Just go away.
Mother I'm so scared.

Empty bed and all of the sheets are gone,
They're wrapped around me and you.
All is quiet but the drop of a gun.
I want to belong...to someone...
But maybe life's not for everyone.

One of God's Better People by Robbie Williams
-----
You're one of God's better people
And you don't know
That's why you're special
And I cry so I can talk like this
From my downbeat existence
And I know that you can make my wish
If my wish is pure

But I don't know
I just don't know
I don't know
Let me love you so
Now I can't live this without you
I'd die without you
Without you, without you

You're one of God's better people
And you don't know
That's why you're special
It must hurt to see your favourite man
Lose himself again and again
And I know that you're my only friend
>From way back when

My wish was pure
It was oh so pure
It was pure
I couldn't love you more
Now I can't live this without you
I'd die without you
Without you
Now I can't live this without you
I'd die without you
Without you, without you

'cos I don't know no more
I just don't know no more
I jsut don't know
Let me love you so
Now I can't live this without you
I'd die without you
Without you
Now I can't live this without you
I'd die without you
Without you, without you

You're one of God's better people
And you don't know
That's why you're special

Tea and Sympathy by Jars of Clay
----
Fare thee well
Trade in all our words for tea and sympathy
Wonder why we tried, for things that could never be
Play our hearts lament, like an unrehearsed symphony

Not intend
To leave this castle full of empty rooms
Our love the captive in the tower never rescued
And all the victory songs
Seem to be playing out of tune

But its not the way
That it has to be
Dont trade our love for tea and sympathy
cause its not the way
That it has to be

You begin
And all your words fall to the floor and break like china cups
And the waitress grabs a broom and tries to sweep them up
I reach for my tea and slowly drink in

Chorus:

cause its not the way
That it has to be
Dont trade our love for tea and sympathy
cause its not the way
That it has to be
Dont trade our love for tea and sympathy

So fare thee well
Words the bag of leaves that fill my head
I could taste the bitterness and call the waitress instead
She holds the answer, smiles and asks one teaspoon or two

[chorus x 2]

Dont trade us for tea and sympathy
Dont trade us for tea and sympathy
We can work it out
Dont trade us for tea and sympathy
Dont trade us for tea and sympathy
We can work it out
Dont trade us for tea and sympathy
We can work it out

Goodbye to You by Michelle Branch (believe it or not!)
-----
Of all the things I believe in
I just want to get it over with
tears from behind my eyes
but I do not cry
Counting the days that past me by

I've been searching deep down in my soul
Words that I'm hearing are starting to get old
Looks like I'm starting all over again
The last three years were just pretend and I say

Goodbye to you
Goodbye to everything I thought I knew
You were the one I love
The one thing that I tried to hold on to

I still get lost in your eyes
And it seems like I can't live a day without you
Closing my eyes till you chase my thoughts away
To a place where I am blinded by the light but it's not right

Goodbye to you
Goodbye to everything I thought I knew
You were the one I loved
The one thing that I tried to hold on to

Ohhh yeah
It hurts to want everything & nothing at the same time
I want whats yours and I want whats mine
I want you but I'm not giving in this time

Goodbye to you
Goodbye to everything I thought I knew
You were the one I loved
The one thing that I tried to hold on to
The one thing that I tried to hold on to

Goodbye to you
Goodbye to everything I thought I knew
You were the one I loved
The one thing that I tried to hold on to

We the stars fall and I lie awake
Your my shooting star

Chandeliers by My Friend Steve
----
Crystalline chandeliers hang from your sleeping eyes
Each stone seems more than a crystal to me
They're more like diamonds that you have wiped within your angel kissed skin
Far too many time these rigid stones, these diamond tears
With the numbers so great
They've formed the chandeliers from you

All these jagged years so mean
So lean of interludes of delight
Many an eve you've wept 'til blue
Many more you've held your feelings in tight

Deep down within you carry other's sins
And you cry to the man who sits up high
So many worries see joy pass in flurries
Can leave you wrinkled to die

4 A.M. by Our Lady Pace
-----
Walked around my good intentions
And found out there were none
I blame my father for the wasted years
We hardly talked
Never thought I would forget this hate
And a phone call made me realize I'm wrong

And if I don't make it known that
I loved you all along
Just like sunny days that
We ignored because
We're both dumb and jaded
And I hope to God I figure out whats wrong

Walked around my room not thinking
Sinking in this box
Blame myself for being too much like
Somebody else
I never thought I would just bend this way
Then a phone call made me realize I'm wrong

And if I don't make it known that
I loved you all along
Just like sunny days that
We ignored because
We're all dumb and jaded
And I hope to God I figure out whats wrong

Is Anybody Home? by Our Lady Peace
-----
Goodbye, the future's sold out
There's no use screaming
Who thought we'd ever get this far
Tonight, your faith has come down

To money & a TV
Psychics who've never been to Mars
And nazis breast feeding
I know you must be upset

I can't find meaning
I'm sorry, we're sorry
We're all scared, all scared

Hey, is anybody home
Has anybody wasted tears on
The loneliness
That everyone becomes

Goodnight, the truth has come out
Everyone's needy
White teeth, a ticket to meet God

Be all that you envy
The shotgun under your bed has
Started breathing
You shot it, you shot it
I'm bare, I'm bare

Hey, is anybody home
Has anybody painted fear
On the bedroom walls that save us from

you squeezed it full of pain

with this knife I'll cut out the part of me
the part that cares for you
with this knife I'll cut out the heart of me
the heart that cares for you

I can't believe the way you took me down
I never saw the pain
coming in a million broken miles
like poison FOR my veins

Dry Your Eyes by The Streets
-----
In one single moment your whole life can turn 'round
I stand there for a minute starin' straight into the ground
Lookin' to the left slightly, then lookin' back down
World feels like it's caved in - proper sorry frown
Please let me show you where we could only just be, for us
I can change and I can grow or we could adjust
The wicked thing about us is we always have trust
We can even have an open relationship, if you must
I look at her she stares almost straight back at me
But her eyes glaze over like she's lookin' straight through me
Then her eyes must have closed for what seems an eternity
When they open up she's lookin' down at her feet

Dry your eyes mate
I know it's hard to take but her mind has been made up
There's plenty more fish in the sea
Dry your eyes mate
I know you want to make her see how much this pain hurts
But you've got to walk away now
It's over

So then I move my hand up from down by my side
It's shakin', my life is crashin' before my eyes
Turn the palm of my hand up to face the skies
Touch the bottom of her chin and let out a sigh
'Cause I can't imagine my life without you and me
There's things I can't imagine doin', things I can't imagine seein'
It weren't supposed to be easy, surely
Please, please, I beg you please
She brings her hands up towards where my hands rested
She wraps her fingers round mine with the softness she's blessed with
She peels away my fingers, looks at me and then gestures
By pushin' my hand away to my chest, from hers

Dry your eyes mate
I know it's hard to take but her mind has been made up
There's plenty more fish in the sea
Dry your eyes mate
I know you want to make her see how much this pain hurts
But you've got to walk away now
It's over

And I'm just standin' there, I can't say a word
'Cause everythin's just gone
I've got nothin'
Absolutely nothin'

Tryin' to pull her close out of bare desperation
Put my arms around her tryin' to change what she's sayin'
Pull my head level with hers so she might engage in
Look into her eyes to make her listen again
I'm not gonna fuckin', just fuckin' leave it all now
'Cause you said it'd be forever and that was your vow
And you're gonna let our things simply crash and fall down
You're well out of order now, this is well out of town
She pulls away, my arms are tightly clamped round her waist
Gently pushes me back and she looks at me straight
Turns around so she's now got her back to my face
Takes one step forward, looks back, and then walks away

Dry your eyes mate
I know it's hard to take but her mind has been made up
There's plenty more fish in the sea
Dry your eyes mate
I know you want to make her see how much this pain hurts
But you've got to walk away now
It's over

I know in the past I've found it hard to say
Tellin' you things, but not tellin' straight
But the more I pull on your hand and say
The more you pull away

Dry your eyes mate
I know it's hard to take but her mind has been made up
There's plenty more fish in the sea
Dry your eyes mate
I know you want to make her see how much this pain hurts
But you've got to walk away now.

This one?

But hands down, the saddest song has to be this old chestnut by Terry Jacks (of the Poppy Family). Just look at the pain in his face:

The Waiting Room by Fugazi…..The song really isn’t that depressing but the video is a downer in my eyes.

Anything by Nick Cave.

I implore you to listen to Sigur Ros's "()" album alone and not feel like crying. Especially the first track.

I searched this thread for a tune that I heard this afternoon. I couldn't find it, so here is the Manhattans' Kiss and Say Good'bye which is definitely sad. But sad in a different way than Terry Jack's Seasons in the Sun dirge:

I just love the soul in the choreography. It's not over the top 'look at how good I am' athleticism that currently graces our screens.

I don't see why this one is so depressing. Also, those are rumors. If it weren't called the "Suicide Song", the moniker would just go to something else--maybe something by The Polyphonic Spree.

(What Did I Do To Be So) Black and Blue (this version by Louis Armstrong)

DivShare File - 02 _What Did I Do To Be So_ Black An.mp3

Quote:

Old empty bed...springs hard as lead
Feel like ol’ Ned...wished I was dead
What did I do...to be so black and blue

Even the mouse...ran from my house
They laugh at you...and scorn you too
What did I do...to be so black and blue

I'm white...inside...but, that don't help my case
’cause I...can't hide...what is in my face

How would it end...ain't got a friend
My only sin...is in my skin
What did I do...to be so black and blue

(instrumental break)

How would it end...ain't got a friend
My only sin...is in my skin
What did I do...to be so black and blue

Acoustic version of Wake Up by Arcade Fire. Ridiculously sad.

Lyrics:

Somethin’ filled up
my heart with nothin’,
someone told me not to cry.

But now that I’m older,
my heart’s colder,
and I can see that it’s a lie.

Children wake up,
hold your mistake up,
before they turn the summer into dust.

If the children don’t grow up,
our bodies get bigger but our hearts get torn up.
We’re just a million little god’s causin rain storms turnin’ every good thing to rust.

I guess we’ll just have to adjust.

With my lighnin’ bolts a glowin’
I can see where I am goin’ to be
when the reaper he reaches and touches my hand.

With my lighnin’ bolts a glowin’
I can see where I am goin’
With my lighnin’ bolts a glowin’
I can see where I am go-goin’

You better look out below!

My list of depressing songs: some of these are quite old and obscure, but if your blue funk isn't blue or funky enough, these'll get you there:

Alone Again (Naturally) - Gilbert O'Sullivan
Toby - The Chi-Lites
The Beginning Of My End - The Unifics
The Coldest Days Of My Life - The Chi-Lites
Honey - Bobby Goldsboro
Last Kiss - J. Frank Wilson And The Cavaliers (later by Pearl Jam)

Starry Starry Night - Don McLean
Brandy - The O'Jays (NOT Brandy (You're A Fine Girl) by Looking Glass, although that's pretty sad, too.
House Of Wood - Mandrill (has me in tears by the end of the second verse no matter HOW many times I hear it).

Johnny Cash - You Are My Sunshine

The other night dear, as I lay sleeping
I dreamt I held you in my arms
But when I awoke, dear, I was mistaken
So I hung my head and I cried.

I'll always love you and make you happy,
If you will only say the same.
But if you leave me and love another,
You'll regret it all some day:

You told me once, dear, you really loved me
And no one else could come between.
But now you've left me and love another;
You have shattered all of my dreams:

In all my dreams, dear, you seem to leave me
When I awake my poor heart pains.
So when you come back and make me happy
I'll forgive you dear, I'll take all the blame.

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

I definitely agree with a bunch of these. I've got quite a collection of depressing songs, but here are some of my favorites that might not have been mentioned:

The Point of It All-Amanda Palmer
Skinny Love-Bon Iver
We Are Nowhere and It's Now-Bright Eyes
Delicate-Damien Rice
King's Crossing-Elliott Smith (or any of his songs, really)
Doll Parts-Hole
Where Have You Been?-Manchester Orchestra
Broadripple is Burning-Margot & the Nuclear So-and-So's
Everything Was Beautiful and Nothing Hurt-Mewithoutyou
Sorrow-The National
Note to Self:-Owen
This Place is a Prison-The Postal Service
A Better Son/Daughter-Rilo Kiley
The Weary Kind-Ryan Bingham
World Spins Madly On-The Weepies

Hope this helps.

SageSawdust 11-30-2010 08:49 PM

I am shocked no one has named Fleetwood Mac's "Sara" - I turn that on everytime I feel down.

"In the sea of love, where everyone would love to drown.
But now it's gone - it doesn't matter what for."

Also, if you all have never heard it before, Lita Ford's "War Of The Angels" is a fantastic song about suicide.

Nine Inch Nails - "Something I Can Never Have"

I still recall the taste of your tears.
Echoing your voice just like the ringing in my ears.
My favorite dreams of you still wash ashore.
Scraping through my head 'till I don't want to sleep anymore.

[Chorus:]
You make this all go away.
You make this all go away.
I'm down to just one thing.
And I'm starting to scare myself.
You make this all go away.
You make this all go away.
I just want something.
I just want something I can never have

You always were the one to show me how
Back then I couldn't do the things that I can do now.
This thing is slowly taking me apart.
Grey would be the color if I had a heart.

Come on tell me

[Chorus]

In this place it seems like such a shame.
Though it all looks different now,
I know it's still the same
Everywhere I look you're all I see.
Just a fading fucking reminder of who I used to be.

Come on tell me

[Chorus]

I just want something I can never have

MeltedMetalGlob 03-12-2011 07:38 PM

I scoured all 10 pages to make sure someone else didn't mention this, but then again I may have missed it through blinking back all the tears. ;)

How about Chris Mills "Keep the Corpse Beautiful" on his "Plays & Sings/Nobody's Favorite" album. (even the album art is depressing.)

A co-worker of mine brought the CD in, and there's even a warning on the damn packaging about how the music is specifically designed to bring you down! (I wanted to mention that last part more because I want to make it known that I don't make a practice of owning sad music. Life will get you down automatically; you don't need to give it any extra help, ferchrissakes!)
