Mad World by Gary Jules is insanely depressing.

funny, I never thought of Green Day's "Good Riddance" as a depressing song at all until it was featured at my ex's funeral. Now, it makes me a little sad to hear it, but it's for her, not the song.

Gotta agree with Cash's "Hurt" and PJ's "Black"...

Kevin Gilbert - Song for a Dead Friend

Danny my friend
I think you knew me better than I ever knew you
Cause you read every chapter
And I just glossed right over them and pretended I knew
But I believed in you
I loved you for your brilliance
and your way of making everything absurd
And I relied on you
To make me see the foolishness
of paragraphs that were better as one word

What could I have told you to make you think again
We draw the same conclusions but we choose a different end

When you tear it down it only looks more ragged
And when you build it up it only looks more fake
So why not let it be at least until tomorrow
And then you just might see your sad mistake
Cause life has more to give that what you take

Danny my friend
Forgive me if I break our rule but I think it's overdue
I really cared about you
I didn't think that I could love a friend
as much as I loved you
And we were always friends
We were Captain Jim and Billy
the Super-human Crime-avenging Twins
I'm gonna miss you
I truly am alone now
because there's no one to congratulate my sins

I wish I could have been for you a more consistent friend
The chapters that I skipped I'm going to have to read again

But when I tear it down it only looks more ragged
And when I build it up it only looks more fake
But I can't let it be because part of me died with you
And there's lots of pages missing from my book
You had more to give than what I took.

We met as soul mates
On parris island
We left as inmates
From an asylum
And we were sharp
As sharp as knives
And we were so gung ho
To lay down our lives
We came in spastic
Like tameless horses
We left in plastic
As numbered corpses
And we learned fast
To travel light
Our arms were heavy
But our bellies were tight
We had no home front
We had no soft soap
They sent us playboy
They gave us bob hope
We dug in deep
And shot on sight
And prayed to jesus christ
With all our might
We had no cameras
To shoot the landscape
We passed the hash pipe
And played our doors tapes
And it was dark
So dark at night
And we held on to each other
Like brother to brother
We promised our mothers we’d write
And we would all go down together
We said we’d all go down together
Yes we would all go down together
Remember charlie
Remember baker
They left their childhood
On every acre
And who was wrong?
And who was right?
It didn’t matter in the thick of the fight
We held the day
In the palm
Of our hand
They ruled the night
And the night
Seemed to last as long as six weeks
On parris island
We held the coastline
They held the highlands
And they were sharp
As sharp as knives
They heard the hum of our motors
They counted the rotors
And waited for us to arrive
And we would all go down together
We said we’d all go down together
Yes we would all go down together

Creep - Radiohead

Zar 07-09-2003 06:35 PM

Matthew Good, formerly of the Matthew Good Band, has done some rather depressing songs in his time. He's relatively unknown here in America though, as he's Canadian.

Some of his more depressing songs include Suburbia, Fated, Running for Home, The Fine Art of Falling Apart, A Boy and his Machine Gun, My Life as a Circus Clown, The Rat who would be King, and Going All The Way.

Now that I think of it, most of Matthew Good's songs are depressing =p. Good stuff nevertheless.

Edit: Just thought of another artist with a tendency to depress the hell out of you, Aimee Mann. Just about all of her stuff will make you want to bawl your eyes out, but "Wise Up" takes the cake.

Wise Up

It's not
What you thought
When you first began it
You got
What you want
Now you can hardly stand it though,
By now you know
It's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
'Til you wise up

You're sure
There's a cure
And you have finally found it
You think
One drink
Will shrink you 'til you're underground
And living down
But it's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
'Til you wise up

Prepare a list of what you need
Before you sign away the deed
'Cause it's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
'Til you wise up
No, it's not going to stop
'Til you wise up
No, it's not going to stop
So just...give up

ok, so I just asked a good friend of mine and mind you, he was a roadie for a number of years (AC/DC, Metallica, Crue, KISS), so he's a few light years beyond your average jaded music fan, but this was his answer:

"Don't Worry, Be Happy"

heh.

Mike Oldfield - Embers.
This one REALLY gets me down, if I'm feeling weary.

Elton John - Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word
Personal reasons :\

Just about every song is about rape and murder, from the rapist/murderer's point of view.

but he had just gotten out of bad relationship and seemed to be angry and women in general ath that point... but its a great album none the less

Type O Negative - Bloody Kisses

Not long ago but far away.
A rainy winter's day.
All her pain she kept inside.
Could no longer hide.
No cry for help.
She killed herself.
Both life & love could not be saved.
She took them both to the grave.

A pair of souls become undone.
Where were two now one.
Divided by this wall of death.
I soon will join you yet.
With my blood I'll find your love.
You found the strength to end your life.
As you did so shall I.

Oh no.
Please don't go.
It's like a death in the family.

A crimson pool so warm & deep.
Lulls me to an endless sleep.
Your hand in mine - I will be brave.
take me from this earth.
An endless night - this, the end of life.
From the dark I feel your lips.
And I taste your bloody kiss.

Oh no.
Please don't go.
It's like a death in the family.

Don't die on me.
Don't die on me.
Don't die on me.
Don't die.

That Lux Aeterna song from Requiem for a Dream is pretty depressing, don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet. Its a really good instrumental, there's a lot of emotion in it even though it has no words. Nirvana's unplugged CD has a couple: The Man who Sold the World and Where Did You Sleep Last Night (In the Pines). Marilyn Manson's Coma White is also depressing. Ozzy's Goodbye to Romance makes me think of all the friends I've lost.

The song "Mad World" from Donnie Darko was pretty damn depressing.

Lux aeterna is part of the catholic requiem mass, I think the version used in requiem for a dream is by faure.

The Pogues - Band Played Waltzing Matilda

Tom Waits - Romeo Is Bleeding

Nina Simone - The Ballad of Hollis Brown ( Dylan lyrics, but Simone broods better )

And of course if it hadn't been for disintegration, I might have accidently cracked a smile at some point through high school

For me, it's a toss-up between either Exit Music (For A Film) or Motion Picture Soundtrack, both by Radiohead.
Parasite by Nick Drake is a pretty depressing song too.

Bob Dylan--Masters of War
Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks

You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain

You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud

You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins

How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do

Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul

And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand o'er your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead
