Who do you wish you could sing like?

This was hard to search for so i don't know if this has come up before.

If you could sing like anyone, who'd it be. For me it'd probably be Jeff Buckley, he has such an amazing voice. Although i like to think that i am not too bad a singer (although thats in my own head where my voice resonates differently) i really wish i could reach some of the notes he could. Its funny though, cause sometimes i don't like listening to Grace or other albums cause i can't remotely sing along to the song cause i sound so bad :p
Also, it'd be so much easier to serenade a girl if i could sing somehwere in the realms of this guy, although thats another issue.

so yeah, for me Jeff Buckley and also rest in peace, another muscian who died way, way too young :(

dnd 10-16-2003 07:25 AM

if i could sing as well as play the guitar as well as Matt Bellamy (Lead singer Muse) it would have to be him,
or if i could write lyrics as well as sing, it would have to be Chris Martin (Coldplay),
but if it was just singing...hmm this is hard...
it has to be old skool Michael Jackson, from his Dangerous and Bad days, not the recent stuff. He had a great voice.

Sleepyjack 10-16-2003 07:28 AM

@dnd
alas someone else who like muse!
check out the other thread i started

nice choices though

Redlemon 10-16-2003 07:30 AM

Richard "Bob" Greene, bass singer of The Bobs.

Reuno 10-16-2003 07:36 AM

Certainly John Davis from Korn.

God of Thunder 10-16-2003 08:02 AM

Geddy Lee

Man, can that guy wail!!!

krazixs 10-16-2003 08:16 AM

Dave Matthews

quadro2000 10-16-2003 08:42 AM

Good question. Probably Freddie Mercury. He hit some ridiculous notes, and the funny thing is that his highest, most powerful notes weren't recorded until after he was quite sick from AIDS.

I'd also like to sing with the range of Jason Mraz. I don't like many of his vocal inflections (he gets a little breathy, and inserts an "h" before many vowels) but he really hits some great notes as well.

Robert Plant and Jim Morrison

krazixs 10-16-2003 01:15 PM

Sting would be awesome to, or maybe Bryan Adams, get that raspy sound that drives women crazy

mercury-hg 10-16-2003 01:23 PM

Chris Cornell, undoubtably

Rusty Cage... damn

Derwood 10-16-2003 01:36 PM

Brendan Perry from Dead Can Dance

JohnnyRock 10-16-2003 01:36 PM

Man, that is tough...so many great voices out there. I'd have to go with either Plant, Ozzy or Dio or Bruce Dickinson--all great and distinct voices.

Arc101 10-16-2003 01:38 PM

I would love to sing like Freddie Mercury. I also think Tom Jones has got a great voice for big songs.

ghezzo 10-16-2003 01:53 PM

if i could sing, id sing like Maynard James Keenan from Tool. excellent vocalist. another good rock vocalist is Chris Cornell, From Soundgarden and Audioslave.

smegal 10-16-2003 02:33 PM

Stevie Wonder

KWSN 10-16-2003 03:31 PM

Daryl Palumbo from Glassjaw.

I can't imagine ANYONE mimicing that voice, much less myself. Wish I could.

...Daryl Taberski's (Snapcase) and Jello Biafra's (Dead Kennedys)too.

I want your answer. He didn't even cross my mind until I saw your post, but now that I think about it, he has a nice rich low voice. I like Dead Can Dance to sooth my spirit when stressed out, his voice helps a lot.

K-Wise 10-16-2003 03:58 PM

Hmm though I might like to have a voice that would broaden my abilities as a front man and make me more versatile and be able to sing grunge, metal, alternative, classic rock, choral styles, etc. Like some of my older favorites (Freddy Mercury) and some of my newer ones (Daniel Johns) I don't think I'd want to have anyones voice but my own. I have a pretty good one and I can sing a pretty good number of styles only thing I can't really do is scream out a note whether it be something like Brett Scallions on Innocent or Daniel Johns on Spawn Again or Chino on Digital Bath, Serj on Spiders (I don't think I can do that..never tried), Vedder on Black, etc. It'd be nice to and all but ya know if I was meant to be able to scream like that I would have been given that ability. Instead I'll just sing period like many of the other good vocalists out there like Don Mclean and Jim Croche, Justin Hayward, Adam Duritz, Darius Rucker, Chris Martin, etc. They do just fine without it and if I work at it I could to. Never know until I can actually front a band for real what exactly I'll be capable of but maybe some day I'll be lucky enough to find out.

Asta!!

Nefir 10-16-2003 05:33 PM

Anthony Kedis from Red Hot Chili Peppers. He can do some really interesting and beautiful things with that voice.. very agile, plus the band just rocks :D

bundy 10-16-2003 06:47 PM

Placido Domingo... or Nat King Cole...

thats kind of mood dependent

omega2K4 10-16-2003 07:10 PM

Maynard James Keenan from Tool/A Perfect Circle.

MSD 10-16-2003 08:29 PM

My first thought was Robert Plant, then I thought maybe Jim Morrison, and now I can't decide.

I wish I had a wider vocal range, and I ws just listening to some Zeppelin. Then I started thinking that I always wish I could match the vocals while listening to The Doors.

rogue49 10-16-2003 09:08 PM

Robert Plant or Rob Halford

The lungs on those bastards are incredible.

Snoogans 10-17-2003 02:27 AM

Pavarotti

apeman 10-19-2003 03:27 PM

James Dean Bradfield from the Manic Street Preachers

Robert Plant and Chris Cornell close after.

anti fishstick 10-19-2003 03:32 PM

bjork. very unique voice.

also tori amos.
or maybe fiona apple.

lordjeebus 10-19-2003 03:48 PM

Isaac Hayes -- oh man that would be so sweet.

Baldrick 10-19-2003 04:03 PM

Without a doubt, Leonard Cohen.

Spritebox 10-19-2003 04:17 PM

Mike Sandman

Halx 10-19-2003 04:43 PM

call me sissy..

Peter Heppner from Wolfsheim

Spartak 10-19-2003 05:02 PM

Mike Patton. His vocal talent and range is amazing.

Stiltzkin 10-19-2003 05:05 PM

For me, Jim Morrison, even though I really don't like the guy, or 99.99% of the music his band produced. I can sing like Black Francis from the now-defunct Pixies, sort of. :D

mystmarimatt 10-19-2003 08:53 PM

Brian Stokes Mitchell. yeah, you all probably have no idea who he is. but he can sing like the dickens.

Jack Ruby 10-19-2003 09:53 PM

Devin Townsend. Listen to the song Suicide off the "Accelerated Evolution" album and tell me he hasn't got the greatest voice in progressive metal.

tikki 10-19-2003 11:08 PM

Definitely Dave Matthews. I think Liam or Noel Gallagher would be close second and third though.

Skettios 10-20-2003 12:30 AM

I wouldn't mind being able to sing like the guy from Cake.

mydragonfido 10-20-2003 01:57 AM

Maybe Adam Duritz or Bob Dylan

Gortexfogg 10-21-2003 07:35 AM

I'd love to be able to sing with such emotion and conviction as Bob Dylan. Or Bing Crosby. Bing Crosby always had a cool singing voice.

otnorot 10-21-2003 03:49 PM

Brian Johnson of AC/DC :)

K-Wise 10-21-2003 04:03 PM

How hard could it be to sing like the guy from cake? :)

Asta!!

Rubyee 10-21-2003 05:44 PM

Mike Ness, which is funny because I am a girl.

Bob Biter 10-21-2003 06:10 PM

J.C. Fogerty, from CCR. I would just keep belting out "I Put A Spell On You" all fucking day.

Esoteric 10-21-2003 06:23 PM

Frank Sinatra

gabshu 10-22-2003 03:46 PM

Maynard, no question about it, altough I am a girl so that's probably be weird. So in girls I liked Shakira before she sold out to the american market

Mr.Deflok 10-22-2003 07:12 PM

Peter Steele has an amazingly strong and deep voice which has the power to hold any woman in sexual rapture.

Bowie too, he can do so much with that voice of his.

eple 10-23-2003 01:44 AM

Jeff Buckley had the most amazing voice ever....
But I kinda like mine too.

high_way 10-23-2003 02:52 AM

robert plant, he can do rock, ballad.... just about anything and he has a great tage presence aswell

and jack black. i know he hasnt been around that long, but i love his voice. the song he sings in high fidelity... fucken love it

hawkeye 10-27-2003 10:34 AM

I'd love to have Sebastian Bach's range, or even the lead guy from steelheart (or am I the only one who remembers//liked them??)

flecktone4 10-27-2003 06:47 PM

i'm 80% Dave Matthews at the moment... the quick yodel falsetto he does 'open up my head and let me out' is quite straining...

my only problem is, I haven't got the coordination to sing and play at the same time :(

i'd love to be able to sing like:::: Robert Plant, Chris Cornell, Harry Connick Jnr.

Lunchbox7 10-28-2003 10:09 AM

I dont know his name but the singer from Crash Test Dummies.

high_way 10-28-2003 03:58 PM

mark lanegan

serge 10-28-2003 06:33 PM

I'd have to go with Maynard from Tool.

He can go from soft and mellow to dark and angry very seamlessly.

Exodus 10-29-2003 01:42 PM

Peter Steele (Type O Negative - Black No.1)
Mike Patton (Faith No More - Falling To Peices)
James Hetfield (Metallica - Blackened)
Jonathan Davis (Korn - Blind)

h2ogo69 10-29-2003 02:42 PM

chris cornell - high notes and actual singing
maynard - low notes and aggression
nate (finch) - screams and poppy style singing

Tinker 10-29-2003 03:14 PM

Lisa Gerrard!

jimwah 10-30-2003 05:34 AM

Mike Patton... the legend. Can't believe i read Anthony Keidis before Mike Patton..... Patton taught keidis everything her knows!

Evil Milkman 10-30-2003 10:57 AM

I'd want my voice to sound like Brandon Boyd's from Incubus, if I had a choice.

ledhead 10-30-2003 01:35 PM

Freddy Mercury

had the most passion and emotion for the music. imo best frontman ever.

fishin 10-31-2003 01:26 PM

Thom Yorke.

j-man 10-31-2003 04:38 PM

James Hetfield - Metallica

Guy Harvey from Elbow. Definitely.

Ho-train 11-02-2003 08:58 PM

Cedric (dont know last name) from The Mars Volta...talk about a crazy fuckin' voice, its all over the place.

Mojo_PeiPei 11-02-2003 09:20 PM

Definently David Gilmour from the Floyd.

PeaceFrog 12-02-2003 09:08 PM

Being female i'd have to say either Janis Joplin, or Fiona Apple. But if i were male, either Jim Morrison, David Gilmour or Julian Casablanca. Tough choice.

ReggErving 12-02-2003 09:29 PM

Stephen Malkmus of Pavement/Jicks. Nothing too special about it but it works.

boxcarracer277 12-04-2003 07:00 PM

Chris Carraba

taliendo 12-04-2003 11:56 PM

If I had to choose one, I would say Adam Pascal (the original Roger from the musical RENT.) He's amazing in every recording that I've heard.

Other than that. . .James Taylor, Bob Dylan (more ealier bob than later bob), maybe Art Garfunkel. . .

sadatx 12-05-2003 01:57 AM

Uh...anybody. I can't sing worth shit.

Thom Yourke from Radiohead.

BulletBob 12-10-2003 08:22 PM

Chris Cornell

sailor 12-11-2003 07:30 AM

Stevie Ray Vaughan or Dave Matthews. I like that rough sounding voice.

kajagoogoo 12-11-2003 07:30 PM

Definitely Freddie Mercury

CS733t 12-11-2003 07:53 PM

Maynard or Emerson Hart

Supple Cow 12-11-2003 09:25 PM

Sarah Vaughan!

Ella Fitzgerald is a close, close second because I'd love to have infallible intonation, but Sarah Vaughan's range is amazing AND she scats like a horn player blows. Gotta love that edge. Add Billie Holiday's rasp and you'd have a voice made in heaven.

ubertuber 12-11-2003 09:30 PM

louis armstrong - you can hear the grin on his face...

31Friction 12-11-2003 11:53 PM

I've always wished I could sing like Brad Nowell (Sublime)

Jadey 12-11-2003 11:54 PM

Ed Kowalcyk from Live. When I've seen them live he sounded just like on the CD. Also, Maynard would have to be a consideration. Justin Timberlake also has a really good voice.

Wulf_Hunter 12-12-2003 11:05 AM

Hmm hard choice.......Since someof the one's I'd pick already have been spoken for I'll go with Shannon Hoon of Blind Melon

chingador 12-13-2003 08:56 PM

Tom Waits. He has the coolest, most gravely voice I've ever heard.

Crack 12-13-2003 09:06 PM

His voice is so amazingly cool.

And call me crazy, but I'd like to be able to sing like Davey Havok, lead singer of AFI. To sing so pretty sometimes, and just scream your lungs off at other times.

John Henry 12-14-2003 02:22 AM

Woodie Guthrie. You don't realise how difficult it is until you try.

little-woman 12-15-2003 03:46 AM

I'd like to sound like Norah Jones. Her voice is so sexy and mature but it sounds so natural.

perripken 12-15-2003 06:33 AM

Well it definately ain't Axl Rose.... he sucks!
Dennis DeYoung- Styx

nash 12-16-2003 10:09 AM

Either Brian McKnight or Freddie Mercury depending on what type of songs I feel like singing.

SAM821 12-16-2003 07:23 PM

I think i would like Chris Martin (Coldplay) ... i dont know... when im by myself I try to sing along to the music... i think he's a little better though...

Hey it worked for him... he got gwyneth paltrow

SiNai 12-16-2003 08:41 PM

Daniel Johns from Silverchair. The new stuff, he has excellent range and, uhm, he has a really emotional tone to it.
