Hey guys. You might like this. It is a track that my friend Tucker is working on. He brought it into the store today and I really dug it. See what you think:

It is very thick on the low end. It had our VR-4jr's going to town when we were listening to it in store. Glad you like it Pulp.

HOLY SHIT! GRINDCORE NEWS ON THE IDM/GRINDCORE THREAD! Too bad it had to be bad news. Burnt by the Sun have parted ways with their singer and drummer. No word on whether or not Teddy and John will continue under the BBTS name.

Autechre
Red Snapper
Two Lone Swordsmen
Squarepusher

Thanks for the streaming links too

brandon11983 09-14-2004 06:28 PM

Anal Cunt always makes for some humorous song titles! Good times there.

stazen: good call on the Boards of Canada, I am always torn on whether I like them or Autechre better. Plaid Spokes is a good album you say. I have Double Figure and Not for Threes now, I guess I'll have to pick that one up based on your recommendation. I love DF, but I still am not too crazy about Not for Threes and I have had it for a while now. I love µ-Ziq too, I'm torn between Lunatic Harness and Royal Astronomy. They are 2 very different compositions and I love both of them for their respective differences. Do you care for Mira Calix at all? I picked up her Prickle maxi single (its long enough to be an EP...) and absolutely love it. I highly recommend.

cjvasco 09-15-2004 09:33 AM

Square Pusher, Aphex Twin, Mu

brandon11983 09-15-2004 10:11 AM

Yes, they are IDM composers. Now what about them?

**edit**

stazen: saw Plaid Spokes at Tower today. Decided to buy Amon Tobin Supermodified and tosca Suzuki instead...

stazen 09-15-2004 11:23 AM

Yeah, Boards of Canada served as my introduction to IDM a few years ago and they have been my favorite ever since. I've got most all of thier music AFAIK, which albums do you have? Plaid is my 2nd fav, like I said Spokes is excellent, songs 4-7 are amazing IMO. Trainer is a double cd set, and the variety between tracks is amazing, IIRC it's a compliation of old and new tracks. Rest Proof Clockwork is another great album, much more melodic on the whole. I love most anything by µ-Ziq too, Brace Yourself, Tango and Vectif, Salsa with Mesquite, Bluff Limbo and esp. In Pine Effect. I never really took to Mira Calix, but I may have to give them another listen.

Amon Tobin is great too, his tracks have a real instrument / DnB sound to them that I really dig. I haven't heard Tosca Suzuki before.

Have you ever checked out Warp Records Bleep: http://www.warprecords.com/bleep/
It's an online music store where you can sample the entire collection and buy MP3's or CD's. It's great!

brandon11983 09-15-2004 07:18 PM

From BoC I have:

Music Has the Right to Children
Geogaddi
In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country
Twoism

All I need is Skam/Hi Scores EP and Peel Session.

Suzuki has a really laid back, chill feel to it. I am listening to it now and really enjoying it. I have checked out Warp's Bleep section many times. Good stuff!

*bump
really liking I Am Robot And Proud
it's so utterly cheese and unpretentious, I love it. I want to go running through field of daffodils and fall in love with a french girl.

PulpMind 10-06-2004 09:10 AM

no, make that a german girl. the first track off of his album "You Make Me This Happy" is exemplarary (sp?).

mdrop 10-07-2004 04:24 AM

Ah, Dillinger Escape Plan is excellent. Saw them live this summer, the mosh pit was huge. I came out of the chaos with a 5cm bleeding wound in my stomach, some really sore ribs, a bit of bleeding from the mouth and naturally, a huge grin :D Haven't witnessed a gig so full of energy and positive rage in years.

Draconis 10-07-2004 05:49 AM

I'm going to see dillinger this month at Tremont. It's gonna be TIIIIIIIIIGHTTTT

brandon11983 10-07-2004 09:11 PM

I saw Dillinger with Every Time I Die at the Metro Tuesday night. Best show ever.

I'll just toss these out here.
to restate the obvious Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, AE, µ-Ziq, Amon Tobin, Speedy J, BoC, VSnares, D'atachi, Bogdan, Dntel, Plaid, Two Lone Swordsmen, and Astrobotnia are all fantastic (I'm sure I left some out but I'm not going back through all the pages to find more examples).
People I haven't seen mentioned that should be checked out would be Cim, D'arcangelo, Monolake, Dwayne Sodahberk, Flashbulb, Lazyfish, Mr. Projectile, Matmos.

I'm a real big fan or FSOL as well, especially the album ISDN. So if you've never heard that album definatly check it out. It's fan-fucking-tastic.

and on a side note, I'm not sure I'd consider Orbital to be IDM. But that's just my opinion.

illogan 11-08-2004 01:06 PM

also, BoC = Gods

µ-Ziq - Within A Sound

brandon11983 11-10-2004 08:35 AM

Oh, I bought Venetian Snares' Huge Chrome Cylinder Box Unfolding and Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works 85-92 last week. SAW is fucking amazing, but I don't think it has the "raw" ambient sound that SAW Volume II has. The VS disc is just painful to listen to. And by that I mean really fuckin' cool. Don't listen on an empty stomach though. I've been into to rococo rot. big time lately. I think I'm gonna order their first 2 discs, The Amateur View and Music is a Hungry Ghost soon. I can't recommend their new album, Hotel Morgen enough.

*bump* just saw this thread for the first time. another idm fan here, and i bet you're not surprised if i say that my favourites are autechre and boards of canada. i'm more into the emotional and melodic stuff so i like AE's early releases, such as incunabula and amber, the best. i also got a few plaid cd's but i'm still getting into them. i have to praise the band that's perhaps not been mentioned here as much as they should: future sound of london. their album dead cities is one of my all time favourites, very dark, intelligent and beautiful. definitely worth checking out. lifeforms is something totally different, slow and emotional ambient but a wonderful experience as well. orbital is another favourite and again something quite different. in sides contains some of the most beautiful tracks i've heard..

i'm also a big fan of psychedelic trance such as hallucinogen that was already mentioned here, and i think that genre would deserve its own thread.. but if you're at all interested, hallucinogen is the name you should start with.

Have you ever listened to ISDN? I'm not sure as to when it came out but I think it was before Dead Cities. However, if you liked Dead Cities you'll love ISDN.

Actually I own a copy of ISDN as well but somehow I haven't gotten into it as much as Dead Cities or Lifeforms. Maybe it's just because it was the last one I bought and I haven't yet given it as many listens as the other two. I've heard a lot of positive comments about ISDN though, so maybe I should just listen to it a few more times. Hmm.. I think I'll give it a spin tonight :)

brandon11983 11-17-2004 09:27 PM

I have Dead Cities and Lifeforms but I haven't gotten around to picking up ISDN yet. Looks like a trip to Virgin or Tower is in order...

brandon11983 11-23-2004 09:07 AM

IDM or not. You should all buy the Downward Spiral Deluxe Edition SACD. Or I will never speak to you again.

illogan 11-29-2004 11:48 AM

but... why...
is there anything super duper special that comes with it aside from remastered tracks?

majik_6 10-28-2005 04:29 PM

Hmm, interesting thread. :)

I'd never really explored the IDM genre before, but I have heard and LOVED Boards of Canada, so it looks like I'll have to give some of the other mentioned bands a listen!

PulpMind 10-28-2005 05:51 PM

The Flashbulb and Frog Pocket.
My two new favorite artists.
The drill'n'bass (similar to the more popular artists squarepusher or aphex twin), meets classical music and other unexpected forms of "other" music. Flashbulb is a little more diverse, and has things that go in completely other directions, but his best is by far the fusion with classical. Frog Pocket is more consistent and heart wrenching.
Beautiful.
