versatile guitar amplication

ok, i go into sam ash, guitar center, any local store and asks about amps...the long haired guy always says, so what kind of music do you play bro? im sick of that, are there amps out there are capable of producing more than one sound. I have found one brand rivera that seems promising...but i mean they say blues get fender, rock get marshall nu metal heavy distortion get mesa boogie. the problem with the rivera is they are almost impossible to find. any suggestions are greatly appreciated. oh and i dont have a particular style...which is why i dont want an amp that pigeon holes me to a certain sound.

The trick that Ive learned is to get youre hands on a decent large amp. 100 watts should do you just about right. Then find yourself a decent multi-effects pedal. I tend to stick with a Marshall amp of some sort. It seems to be the middle ground between clean and massive amounts of distortion. And I have a DigiTech DNX-2 multi-effects processor. I play everything from black metal to classic blues. I can get just about any tone that I want with a little tweeking. Good Luck!

you could go with a "modeling" amp, like the amps from line6, or the fender cybertwin. they allow you to change sounds on the fly. my lead guitarist had a line6 flextone 2x12 with the line6 pedal switch. he got the most amazing guitar tones and was able to change sounds/styles quickly.

awesome amp.

i've got a '76 fender twin, and it produces some amazing clean tones. i've got a couple quality distortion pedals (one which i made myself!) and with them i can make the twin rock like almost any marshall or boogie. though i stumbled on my setup through sheer luck, i think it's a good idea to get an amp that has a clean tone that you like and worry about dirtying it up with some external effects.

I can make my Marshall sound like anything I want it to. the important thing about buying an amp is that you get a GOOD amp. Not a 150 dollar Crate that sounds like ass. Next time you go amp shopping, take your guitar with you. Playing on your own guitar is crucial in amp selection, trust me (us? I'm sure there are others here who agree). Then, when the salesman approaches you, tell him to 1) get you an amp cord, and 2) fuck off. Guitar center employees are usally pretty good about this, and only bug you when you ask for it. In short, quality amop= more versatility. FYI, Mesa Boogie amps suck a fat donkey nut for cleaner tones.

I've bought myself a Fender Hotrod Deluxe recently. They say buy Fender for blues. I'd say, buy (tube) Fender for one of the most beautiful clean sounds on the market. You get a decent overdrive to go with it. And whatever else you want, there are pedals for that.

I don't believe in the modeling amps. They might be fine for studio work, but when you're playing, or learning to play, you want to hear yourself "uneffected", just so you actually know how terrible your playing is and have the impetus to get better...

I've had two 'Orange' amps, and I reckon that they are hard to beat... but they are not that cheap.
