Big Day Out 2004
According to the Rolling Stone, after 12 years, they've done it! Lees and West have signed Metallica to headline BDO 2004! (They've also shot down rumours of signing REM or Radiohead, but who cares? We've got Metallica! And they're playing the old stuff, not much of St Anger!) I'm not a metalhead, but Metallica are the stuff of legends.
But then I read on...and in the best tradition of BDO headliners, they're not coming to Perth. SHIT. I hate this stupid back of nowhere city. The number of fucking concerts I've missed in the last few years because no-one can be stuffed coming all the way over here...

Cmon guys. I heard Perth rocks and everyone there loves it???
I'd look out for some cheap Virgin flights if you're that keen for Metallica. They should come up at least once between now and BDO. Here in Brissie they've done their usual act and put BDO on the same day as the only Australian International One-Dayer for the year.

Meh. Metallica, shmeticallica. Doesn't really bother me hugely. I'm always out of the bloody country during BDO anyway...
I can't believe I missed the opportunity to go to the Auckland BDO, then the Perth one. I'm an idiot!

Bummer, auswegian. The Perth one's great now it's at Claremont. No more trying to fit a Nirvana crowd into the pavillion at bassendean, and the boiler room in the showgrounds pav can go off like a frog in a sock.
JTC, I might just start looking for those flights! No doubt there'll be another half dozen good acts who don't make it to Perth either. In the last few years, we've missed At the Drive-in, Augie March, Ozmatli, 28 days, Killing Heidi, something for kate, the testeagles,TISM, Jon Spencer, Aphex Twin...the list goes on

It's a pity there's so many goddamn nimbys in Claremont, and that the Claremont city council are such pussies. Mark my words, in a few years there'll be a bit too much noise or some minor disturbance and a legion of yuppie wankers and old people will rise out of the depths and make them move the BDO to somewhere idiotic like Kwinana.
Hey, on a random tangent, do you guys (ones in Perth) know of a man called msquared? He is famous for being known to literally half of Perth, so I'm wondering if thats accurate or an exaggeration.

msquared? What else might I know him as? I'd be surprised if he's that famous and I've never heard of him.
I agree with you re: Claremont council. But I can't really think of anywhere else you could have it. We don't have any other venues like that. Belvoir could only have 2 or 3 stages and no boiler room, there's no way they'd fit it back in to Bassendean, and Challenge (yeah, I've heard talk about this one...they were thinking about Challenge and McGillivray for a while) has too many stairs and turns. Where would you have it in Kwinana? The motorplex would be to small, wouldn't it?

I somehow get the impression that if they really do boot the BDO out of Claremont, the organisers might have to scale it down. Which means even less bands coming to Perth. This is all a worst case scenario, but I could still see it happening.
Msquared is pretty much all the guy goes by (he legally changed his name). He has somewhat of a reputation. Not for anything in particular, just by virtue of him being the point around which entire Perth subcultures revolve. Thats what I've been told, so maybe not.

Hmm...Msquared...what kind of subculture? He's not involved in Subversion, and I'm pretty sure he's not anything to do with Dominion/Nevermore either. Not one of the amplifier regs to my knowledge, and I haven't come across him on the mainstream pub scene...which pretty much just leaves the clubs, R&B or Trance-DB. Either way, it's unlikely I would've come across him. But if that's his scene, he doesn't know that much of Perth anyway.

Just did a search...he's a swancon juggler. Judging by the looks and associations, I'd guess that he's an anachronist, too. He ran GenghisCon, so a mate of mine would know of him. He looks like he's pretty well known in his demographic, but that's a fairly small demographic.

well i've never heard of msquared either?
As for metallica, did anyone seem them back in 1998 (when they came to perth), i believe the last time they were in perth. At the end of that, they said see you in 5 years, i think. Also the last time they came before that wa 1993, i believe. At the moment i am more interested in seeing Radiohead, because i am yet to see them. Also i was pissed earlier this year that Audioslave didn't come to Perth. I am a big Soundagraden fan, and would've loved to see Cornell live... |

Hmm, from the sounds of it I don't know much of the Perth scene either, really. I have to rectify that situation one of these days... What advice would you give a complete novice in these matters?
