Politics in song..... Post a song that says your beliefs

I'll start with Eve of Destruction by Barry McGuire because I truly find it more relevant today than it was in 1965.

Why? There's an oil slick that is encapsulating the whole freaking Gulf an may get out to the Atlantic, we are at war but 50% of our troops are on anti-depressants and sleep aids, we over medicate and then our waste containing the meds contaminate the fish and from there the eco system, families are falling apart, but we aren't on the Eve of Destruction. The world's economy is falling a part, there's violence in our streets, our schools and our homes, there's politicians and talking heads telling us to hate the other side because they break their egg on the wrong side.... But you tell me over and over and over and over and over again how ya don't believe we're on the eve of destruction

My blood's so mad it feels like coagulating, I'm sitting here just contemplating, I can't twist the truth it knows no regulation.... when human respect is disintegratin, this whole crazy world is just too frustrating

And you tell me over and over and over and over and over again how ya don't believe we're on the eve of destruction

I don't really feel that there's a song that captures my political beliefs, per se, but this is one of my favorite spiritual songs. It represents my endless quest for knowledge and understanding of myself, of others, and of the world around me (including politics).

"Yeah, we've got it figured out this time, we're sure.
Indecision blessed.
Put our minds to rest, onto the next term.
November 7th was just another day for the world to laugh.
It was just more of the same....
Let's look at the facts: we're sidetracked by how much we're being taxed.
What little regard we have for human life.
We fight for the scraps and blame the poor.
All the while our future is bought and paid for.
Who manipulates the economy?
And so the story goes.
Don't let your mind be guided by who you vote for,
because chances are you don't know what's in store.
Whats in store?"

Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)
by Green Day

Yes, I know about his girlfriend, I know about the interpretations, but this song, to me, represents living and enjoying the unpredictable, to make memories, to "Have The Time Of Your Life."

All to soon time (youth) will past you by and all you will be left with is the memories, make some good ones to last you the rest of your life, everyday. They will also give you lots to enjoy when you get older.

Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road
Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go
So, make the best of this test and don't ask why
It's not a question but a lesson learned in time
It's something unpredictable but, in the end, is right
I hope you had the time of your life

So, take the photographs and still-frames in your mind
Hang it on a shelf in good health and good time
Tattoos of memories and dead skin on trial
For what it's worth, it was worth all the while
It's something unpredictable but, in the end, is right
I hope you had the time of your life

INSTRUMENTAL INTERLUDE

It's something unpredictable but, in the end, is right
I hope you had the time of your life

It's something unpredictable but, in the end, is right
I hope you had the time of your life

there's a few songs that speak to aspects of my politics but none that sums it all up really.

my position on conservatives since reagan:

there are so many great lines in this song.
i like to think that if folk hadnt slept on this in 1980 that we would be in a more sane present reality. have a listen.

gang of four: 5:45

but most of the music i think of as being something like radical pays no particular attention to the crushing stupidity that is all around and just does something else, another way. of this there's many many examples but here's one i like

I can't believe nobody has posted Bob Dylan yet. Standing in somber defiance of the status quo and warning the powers that be of a coming revolution, Dylan quietly sings his lyrics as both warning and prophesy.

Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside
And it is ragin'
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin'
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'.

The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is
Rapidly fadin'
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin'.

Invisible Sun:

I don't want to spend the rest of my life
Looking at the barrel of an Armalite
I don't want to spend the rest of my days
Keeping out of trouble like the soldiers say
I don't want to spend my time in hell
Looking at the walls of a prison cell
I don't ever want to play the part
Of a statistic on a government chart

There has to be an invisible sun
It gives its heat to everyone
There has to be an invisible sun
That gives us hope when the whole day's done
It's dark all day and it glows all night
Factory smoke and acetylene light
I face the day with me head caved in
Looking like something that the cat brought in
There has to be an invisible sun
It gives its heat to everyone
There has to be an invisible sun
That gives us hope when the whole day's done
And they're only going to change this place
By killing everybody in the human race
They would kill me for a cigarette
But I don't even wanna die just yet
There has to be an invisible sun
It gives its heat to everyone
There has to be an invisible sun
That gives us hope when the whole day's done

Quote:
Come you masters of war
You that build the big guns
You that build the death planes
You that build all the bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks.

You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly.

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain.

You fasten all the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion'
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud.

You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins.

How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
That even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do.

Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul.

And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand over your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead.

Eh... I wish I could contribute, but conservatives make awful political music.

My favorite political songs are typically Ted Leo and the Pharmacists songs and I rarely feel a whole lot of common ground with them. Pearl Jam is sometimes good, too.
