OK. I have a couple of concerns and comments.
Fly ... I'm hearing only kick drum on your part. Is that correct? Or did you intend to upload other tracks for snare, toms and overheads? Grumpyolddude ... There's a little distortion on your part that sounds unintentional. Can you back down the gain just a little bit ... if possible? Also, we're going to need that click at the beginning. It's going to be rough lining up the parts without that. You might want to wait for the FINAL drum take from Fly before doing anything. ratbastid ... same thing. That click at the beginning is pretty vital to getting everything lined up. This all goes back to the fact that everybody's computer has a different clock and even though each take might start at the beginning the timing is likely to be slightly off. Unless everyone wants to study up on Broadcast .wavs (Broadcast Wave Format - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) I think we're all going to have to include the click for each track. I think the LATEST version of Audacity supports BWAVES. Sonar (what I use for recording and mixing) supports them. One last thing (I know it sounds like it's getting pedantic): save your final tracks as wavs and THEN re-save them as MP3s; that way you will already have the wav file in place to upload if it turns out to be a keeper. Once we have a workflow for these projects they will get easier in the future. I promise. |

in the tune........all i hear is toms...or bongos if you will.....i used mallets on the toms that i covered with a towel......i'm tryin' to get ahold of that clicky percussion wood block deal.....can't remember the name of it....and that will help as well (but too me it still sounds like a fucking click track)...i hear no snare.......or cymbals....or kick for that matter. to me being a drummer it's boring as hell.........it's all percussion. |

Part of the issue with this first tune is that we're sort of ironing out the kinks. That was the idea; figure out how it's all going to work with something relatively easy before we get into the trickier stuff (musically speaking).
Fly, the original is all percussion. I would encourage you to come up with your own thing, however. Let's make this our own. Keep it light, obviously, but put whatever the hell you want in there. I guess we can include anyone's mix. I just don't want to get too scattered. Trying to keep the focus here. I will check out all the new stuff and get some work of my own done tomorrow.

I understand that every track should be recorded to the click, for timing purposes. The front eight count should be there on the uploaded tracks for alignment. Fly, you can go crazy with wood blocks, maracas, bongos, congas, claves, shekeres, udus.... whatever you got laying around or can borrow. You know how to make it tasty and tasteful

Yes, please everyone keep in the front eight. I will be putting up a guide with only the count off and the rhythm parts, specifically for this purpose. Also because it's been requested several times, and I am a forgetful old coot who has had the damn thing on my hard drive but not yet gotten around to throwing it up.
Late in the guide you will hear a beat. That is my foot tapping on one of the tracks. I think it's on the bass. Linoleum and I was wearing shoes for that take (was literally on my way out the door as soon as I finished). I will be making some uploads this morning. I apologize for being late again, but Magpie and I were both out of commission on Sunday with some sort of bug. It's that time of year, I suppose. Fly, if you want it to play with, I can give you a track of just the metronome too. I have each individual part of the guide in wav format still, since that's my default when I move them onto the computer. ratbastid, looks like the solo is yours if you want it. Given that we don't seem to have any other guitarists jumping in here, we'll divvy it up with my on lead in the verses (main riff/arpeggios) and you on rhythm and the solo. You can transpose and play the original or I can transpose it for you, or you can come up with something new. In fact, I would encourage you to come up with something new, and would be happy to scribble something out if you want me to. The more original we can make this, the better as far as I'm concerned. In that vein, actually, idle thought: anyone with a keyboard or piano want to take on the arpeggios? I'd be interested to hear how that would sound. I can provide a chart for that too, although it's pretty simple.

Hello guys, where are we at with this? I imagine everyone is busy but I'm still hoping to put something out soon! I've heard what's been put up recently and it's starting to sound interesting. I'll have to do some new takes because Fly's rhythm changes it up a bit. I'll get some more up soon!

Whoa, this is crazy. Putting together music over a forum? Must be quite the learning experience. If you guys decide to do another project, let me know. I just fixed my guitar/bass rig to record directly onto my computer.

I think we can work with your track. If you get the time and the urge to put something else up then excellent. Hopefully, this won't be the only time we do something like this at TFP. |

Hey. Sorry I've been out of the pocket for a week. I've actually been able to do something I love this week: studio work for a local band that is getting some attention. I hope they make it.
It's been a hectic couple of weeks for me. Last week we rehearsed (me on keyboards; which was the easy part) and then went into Ardent Studios for tracking this week. We have a little bit left to do on Friday and maybe a couple of overdubs but I think I'm pretty much back to normal now. This has been an amazing week for me though (14 to 16 hour days); I got to hang out with one of my idols: Rick Steff (keyboard player for ... a ton of people) who was in the studio working as well; I talked with Jody Stephens for a while (drummer for Big Star); I got to briefly meet Klaus Voorman who's in town working on the final stuff for a killer CD that should be out soon. I got to jam with John C. from Lucero tonight which was a blast. Mostly I just played piano and organ and drank Irish whiskey. If I could make a living doing this my head would explode--not to mention my liver. ---And now for the relevant part instead of me gushing--- So where do we stand on finals for drums and rhythm etc.? Is anybody feeling it? Any drummers want to take a stab at it? I know that Fly is probably not in the best place to do this right now. What about foregoing drums altogether? Why don't we just upload .wavs of what we've got and try to put something together with it? Grumpyolddude do you have an upright bass? We could do a killer bass, piano, guitar, vocal thing ... even if you don't have an upright. |

Gush away, vb! I'll just sit here choking on my envy. Very cool couple of weeks you've had.
My life has been nearly as hectic... unfortunately, very little of it has been music related. No, I don't play upright. I'm just your typical pop/rock fraud. I know what I want to do for the project, just have to get my skinny butt in gear... soon.

Hi guys, I've had a crazy week myself, but I haven't forgotten our project. Unfortunately I can't really do much about the drums, though I'd love to help. So what do we do now? I really want us to get through this so we have something to show off Come on, we can do this! Anyone know any drummers? Let's put up an ad thread? lol

I think we've all gotten a bit derailed here. Real life gets in the way; Magpie and I are going to be moving at the end of the month, I'm switching jobs (possibly twice in a month), and things fall by the wayside. We've all had our issues that have been giving us trouble. On the plus side there's no deadlines here; we can take the time we need. At the same time, I don't want this to just peter out. Let's make sure that doesn't happen.

I feel for you, bro. My condolences to you and your family.
Here in the States, today we celebrate Mother's Day. I'm spending it recalling the many of the great moments I had with my mother (as well as my kid's mom!). Sending a special thought to you and yours as well. Send my a track when you get around to it. I've been super busy, but I'm still on board!
