I'll defend Dashboard to the death. But that's just me. To each their own! It would be a damn boring world if everyone liked the same music.

Overrated for me would be Radiohead. I liked Creep and Fake Plastic Trees, but then I realized that it's all whiny crap. I don't get it.... Why is it so good?

Sleepyjack 09-04-2003 07:38 AM

It seems you can't win with all this overated stuff. How can you quantify the quality of a band anyway?
Certainally not by the number os albums sales!
Also in some cases, if a band is well know and respected and you don't like them, does that make them overated?

Overated has become as frivilous term as sell out. What and how does it matter?

I pretty much agree with what Acme-143 said. Ha i just noticed the post then :p
Good job Acme :D

Just fucking with you. But seriously to put At the Drive-In up there with All-American Rejects makes me

Overrated would be:
- Metallica from Load onwards [though i'm not exactly sure anyone really feels for the words "i'm madlly in anger with you". wtf??]

- AFI's new album [the fact that it's being played on MTV makes me shudder and weep]; I honestly enjoyed the older stuff.

- Any "punk" being played on MTV and most mainstream radio nowadays. But then again why should I give a fuck, if the kids like it, then they like it -- their loss ;)

ok i cant say he's 'bad', but i CANNOT stand Dave Matthew's Band. Its not that i cant stand their style or music or lyrics, i think they are all good, but i just think he has a really BAD voice.... and im the only person ive found who thinks this..

JohnnyRock 09-05-2003 08:20 AM

The Who
The Beatles [great songwriters...not great musicians]
Nirvana
radiohead
everescence [sp]
R.E.M
Dave Matthews Band

DownwardSpiral 09-05-2003 05:32 PM

The Beatles are by far the most overrated band anyone ever mentions.

Asshole Lover 09-05-2003 05:58 PM

Rolling Stones = most overrated

Beatles = most underrated

I don't mind his voice, but what I find really annoying is the millions of teeny-bopper fans he has chasing after him thinking they're educated because they listen to something other then their usual dosage of pop.

I like a few songs from each band, but I just don't see what it is about them? I still respect them for sticking around soo long, but i can't get into the music.

I have to almost fully agree with you...neither band "does it for me" either.

But I can't respect them for sticking around so long...Aerosmith needed to take a permanent vacaction after releasing Permanent Vacation. Everything after that album sound the same.

I think Kid Rock is way overrated...and so is the White Stripes. In fact I can't stand either of them.

Yes, yes and fuck yes. Nirvana had 4 albums. 1 was a huge hit (Nevermind). No one ever heard of Bleach, because well, it sucked and I can see why they didn't get mainstream popularity from it.

Then Insesticide came out and was not very popular. Then they had another hit (not as good as Nevermind) with In Utero. Then Kurt killed himself.

So basically, Nirvana had 1 great album, one good album and 2 that were garbage.

I can't see how a band with only 50% success (2 out of 4) on albums can be considered so "great"

filtherton 09-06-2003 12:48 AM

How can the ratings even matter? I think we can all agree, or atleast i can agree with myself, that the morons have the monopoly on the consumption of music in this country. J-LO IS RICH... FROM HER MUSIC CAREER... HOW? This could only happen if someone organized a giant underground collective of morons to support financially what will amount to Paula Abdul for a new generation. Have you lost faith in humaity yet?

It is really about the immortal Wham!/George Micheal teamup. A little song called "Careless Whispers"
Way Underrated!

phlox 09-06-2003 03:30 PM

i'd say the white stripes new album is way overrated and their older material underrated. other overrated bands? oh, i could go on and on...creed makes me feel violent. you're not jesus! you're just not! nirvana too, although the unplugged cd is perfect for listening to when you're taking a bath and feeling sorry for yourself...

wally 09-06-2003 05:09 PM

I agree Creed is overrated. I used to be a big fan, but when everyone jumped on the bandwagon, I grew tired of them.

student 09-08-2003 05:51 AM

to start off...about 60%(thats a pretty conservative estimate) of americans and people in general are stupid. they hear songs from bands like creed and godsmack and whatever else the popular radio stations are playing and buy their cds. they like the music because it fits the mold, no longer than 3 minutes, 2 chorus solo, build up, chorus end. they dont really listen to what i consider to be good bands because it takes work to find them. im not trying to be some pretentious dude who only listens to unsigned band or bands on indie labels but that is most often the good bands are. their songs cant be played on the radio, they dont fit. listen to the mars volta cd, deloused in the comatorium and try to find a song that could be played on the radio. and the bands that do get played on the radio, are in my opinion probably created by the record companies because i just cant see how creed could have gotten signed by playing local shows.

lions20 09-08-2003 06:53 AM

I think all rap/hip hop is overrated.

DownwardSpiral 09-09-2003 04:08 PM

Mainstream rap is overrated. So are the Beatles. But I don't see how some of you can say Tool, Pearl Jam and Nirvana are overrated. Enlighten me.

Xiangsu 09-09-2003 05:29 PM

This post should be asking what bands do you just dont like. Because no one can really say that the Beatles are overrated and tell the truth at the same time. They have influenced the very foundation of rock music as we know it. So whether or not there music sounds good to us now they have influenced the music we loved. I would say System of a down is overrated.

filtherton 09-10-2003 05:50 PM

Tool could be called overrated just because most of their fans put them on such a high pedestal that they have to be overrated, just cause they're rated so high.
I think that nirvana is overrated for the simple fact that if kurt cobain hadn't painted the wall red, he and nirvana would probably only be mentioned in the same breath as soundgarden and dirty flannel.
As far as pearl jam goes, they're overrated just because eddie vedder(ar?) is such a complete tool.

I was thinking the same thing about Tool. They are really great and I love their music but people hold them up so high and bash you into the ground if you say an unkind word about them.

I don't think Nirvana is overrated. I liked a ton of songs off of Bleach but I think they sounded better live.

I can't see how Pearl Jam could be overrated as they've influenced a lot of music people put out now.

50 Cent is overrated, sure. His songs that aren't being played every 5 minutes though are pretty damn good for rap.

And there's no possible way The Beatles are overrated. If you don't like them say so, but they can't be overrated. Name another band that's as influential as them from that time period.

Also, any band that is playing a concert near you and they've just had one song everyone knows and the radio is hailing them as the next big thing is overrated. Some of these bands are actually really good besides just that song or two they play on the radio, but that doesn't mean they're not overrated. And I hate how DJs on the radio call a song brand new when I've been listening to it for a few months or even a year from the album it came off of.

DownwardSpiral 09-12-2003 03:42 PM

If Tool can be considered overrated because of the high pedestal that their fans place them on, then can't the Beatles also be considered overrated for the same reason? All their fans place them on this high pedestal of how 'influential' they were and the such, so if you say Tool is overrated because of their fans, then the Beatles would be too.

Mr. Spacemonkey 09-12-2003 03:46 PM

PEARL JAM! Pearl Jam is way overated . . . . lol :)

i can't believe some people actually said that.

DownwardSpiral 09-12-2003 03:49 PM

Yes Spacemonkey, those people don't have a concept of overrated.

QuasiMojo 09-12-2003 04:29 PM

Beethoven.

What a Hack.

His "Fifth" was pretty cool but....

actually...I liked "Fer Elise"

hmmmm.
OK- I changed my mind.

Beethoven is cool
