Muse - Black Holes and Revelations
Just picked this one up today. A good genre bending rock group with an outstanding guitar player. One of the few new bands I enjoy, and one of the only groups that have a good relisten value [/snob] For those of you who haven't heard of them, this is a good intro: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Cm3qH89Yr...=muse%20muscle
For those who have heard of them.... do you find it surpasses most other albums, or will you be sticking to Origins of Symmetry, etc...? |

Based on "Knights of Cydonia", "Supermassive Black Hole", and that problematique song...eh. My curiosity is unaroused. That's just a first impression based on a sampling of the album, though, so who knows. I'll most likely wait for it to drop in price on half.com, though.

I've always thought Muse sounded like "if Radiohead had gone the rock route instead of the electronic route". Which isn't a bad thing

The only thing I've heard by Muse is "Knights of Cydonia", which was interesting enough for me to copy down some lyrics and look it up later to find out who the group was. (There's no good radio in my area, I heard that song while visiting family out-of-state.)
I liked the Queen-ish vocals and guitar. Is that single a good indicator of the rest of the album?

Supermassive Black Hole is a better indication (to my mind).
The last album (Absolution) is fantastic, and having had this new one on heavy rotation for a week or two, I'd heartilly recommend it. You can listen to the whole thing (legally) here: http://www.mp3.com/muse/artists/118122/summary.html Try before you buy. Remember - it is unlawful to use software (like Audacity, for example) to record the stream and avoid buying the CD!

I picked it up today (being poor, had to wait for a paycheck), and I've only listened to the first two songs...but I'm impressed! I'm really enjoying it so far. Sometimes it's hard for me to jump into an album head-first (there has been NO play of the new Muse around me ANYWHERE), but this album is making it easy.
My boyfriend didn't understand why I had to buy it...but that picture on the back cover of the liner notes made it worth it--I find Muse's liner notes to usually be some of the best and most artistic out there. I would have thought my slavish devotion to Muse would have made it obvious as to why I had to have it. And yes, Redlemon, if you like the theatrics of Queen's music, you'll definitely like Muse--especially Absolution. EDIT: Wow, someone discovered Prince while recording this album, I think. EDIT: While I don't think it is as sonically cohesive as previous albums, I do think it's definitely moving in a new and positive direction for Muse. Even my boyfriend liked it, and he didn't like any of their previous albums. Personally, I think all of the songs are very different with some underlying elements that do tie them altogether. Admittedly, Matt Bellamy's keyboard skills are a little lacking at times. It's honestly not his best instrument, and I wish it weren't as featured here. I really do LOVE him on guitar, he's fucking awesome. But the fact is, when he plays keyboard, he tends to rely on very simplistic devices to get him through. Though given the content of this album, I can tell they wil be relying on samplers and sequencers to get them through a live show--not surprising at all. Overall, though, I very much enjoy it, and love picking out which elements of it I do like best--which bassline, which guitar piece--AND I'm glad there's finally a Muse song I can shake my booty to.

Oddly enough, there is a folk-rock acoustic quartet in the deep South (based in eastern Alabama) that has been called Muse for about 25 years. They've released several CDs over the years, and I used to see some of their songs listed on P2P servers, so I wonder how many folks try the illegal download with the new Muse and end up with the old Muse instead.

I loved Absolution, that is one great album. So when I heard Knights of Cydonia I had to run and get it. I really thought that this one may be better but it wasn't. It's a good album in it's own right but to me it seemed that KoC is the best song on the album. Starlight I just cannot listen to, sounds too pop'ish. It's a good cd but it didnt' last long in my CD changer.

Subsequently, I find it odd Matt Bellamy wrote such a song, given his romantic escapades.

I just started listening to Muse. I don't know how I missed them until recently... good stuff.

I occasionally listen to British web radio. Back in 2003, when Absolution first came out, they were huge on British radio but getting relatively little attention in the United States. Warner Music hadn't even decided whether or not to release the album in the U.S. (they didn't release Origin of Symmetry here until after Absolution proved to be popular), and so, when it did come out, it was nearly impossible to find. I managed to pick up a copy at an awesome store on the Ave in Seattle early spring 2004. Sometime that summer, my best friend comes to me and says, holy shit, you've got to hear this new band called Muse. I pulled the CD off my shelf and tossed it at him. It's the ONLY time I've ever been ahead of the game with music where he is concerned, haha, but now we're equally obsessed.
