What name do I put on the title...
My girlfriend is driving a POS ford that's about to die. She has shitty credit, so I'm gonna pay for a decent used car outright and she's going to pay me back.
I want to make sure I don't get screwed on this deal, so how do I work the name on the title? Do I need to put "my name * AND * her name", or what? Any ideas on this would be appreciated before i screw myself here. |

your name on the title alone. when she's paid for it, or when you want her to own it out right, transfer the title.
it's not a lack of trust to ask to have your name on the deed of an asset that you've paid for.

If she's going to be driving it, you put your name on the title as a leinholer and her name as the owner, when she pays you back you remove your name as the leinholder. This way she is responsible for anything she does with that vehicle (accidents, parking tickets, etc.) and you still have a financial interest in the vehicle, yet no responsibility for what she does with it.

Ahhhh ok thanks! So when i get the title from the previous owner, I just put my name on it and sign it then?
Also, how do you get the car home without a tag on it? Is that legal? If you get in an accident on the way home, is the car just toast at that point? |

cj112 thought about parking tickets, etc...which i didn't. smart.
but as for driving it home...ask your insurance agent. if it's a used car, they should be able to cover it under the old tabs as long as you have a pending registration application.
