New Yamaha R1
I read a article about the newest version (2004)off this machine. This motorcycle is the first production motor with more horsepowers than kilograms.
Don't know when you can buy it or any more specs Weight : 172kg Bhp: 180 Check the link for some fancy pics http://www.yamaha-motor-europe.com/p...el.asp?type=r1 |

I'd be very wary of what Yamaha says about that motor...
the HP numbers they are giving are at the crank with what they estimate the ram-air will add with the bike in full-swing... to sum it up, I am not concerned this thing will be stronger than the gixxer1k, although I would like it to be...

Can't wait to see one it person looks real sharp I hope it lives up to the hype. I rode an 03 R1 on a test ride and it was impressive.

my question is...what is the point of all that horsepower? the average rider even the above average ride is never going to use the full measure of their machine. I could understand if you were into track racing and such, but for your everyday rider...they are simply paying for extra power they are not going to use. Maybe I just dont understand the sport bike mentality. Im a cruiser girl. I would rather enjoy the ride, and the scenery than go racing around on the edge.

thats a very good question stray kitten, I'll try to help ya out I guess the bottom line is, that nothing is ever enough for humans.. bigger, begger, faster, lighter, smaller, whatever we can make it more of, we will, its out nature and it a good thing because otherwise I would be typing this to you on a UNIVAC.. why do people spend 10 grand on an AIR-COOLED v-twin engine for their chopper, and put a belt final drive on it when a belt drive is pretty much a guaranteed disaster waiting to happen when you have more than 100hp? (dont take my word for it, ask Eric Buell) wretched excess, its the americn way, actually, no, strike that, its the human way now, heres another reason. the Big 4 (yamaha, honda, suzuki, kawasaki) make these bikes as powerful, light, and twitchy as they do because World Superbike and AMA SUperbike (where this bike is going to end up racing) will only let you change so much on the bike. For the 2004 rules (as they sit now, they keep being changed) they wont allow you to alter valve mater, cams, cranks, springs, etc.. basically the manufacturers are going a little more apeshit with floormodels now than they did say 10 years ago because now that they are allowing inline 4 litre bikes to race against V-twin litre bikes (used to be V-twin litre bikes against 750 I-4's) they will not allow as much work to be done to the I-4's, they are trying to make it more of an even playing field for all.... now, lastly, that particular bike is NOT MEANT to be used at its full potential on the street, simply put, you can't. the manufacturers have caught on to the fact that a FRACTION of the bikes they are going to sell will be used at full potential, and as such, have sacrificed a lot of reliabiliy (if you run the piss out of it the way you would a 600) on this last generation of litre bikes... they now rev to 14k because they know that no one has the balls to do that for more than a few seconds every once in a while.... lastly, there are people who can use up all those bikes potential, not many of them, and certainly not me... at least not yet but when its done, even when done on the street, it is an amazing thing to see |

Took it home today, the red one, it is one cool machine. The underseat exhaust does make your legs a little warm though.<br>

Yeah in the sunlight it positively glows. I was sold on the grey/silver one until I saw a Red one parked outside in downtown KC in March. After that I was just bidding time until I could get a Red one.
