I guess the bottom line is, that nothing is ever enough for humans.. bigger, begger, faster, lighter, smaller, whatever we can make it more of, we will, its out nature and it a good thing because otherwise I would be typing this to you on a UNIVAC..
why do people spend 10 grand on an AIR-COOLED v-twin engine for their chopper, and put a belt final drive on it when a belt drive is pretty much a guaranteed disaster waiting to happen when you have more than 100hp? (dont take my word for it, ask Eric Buell) wretched excess, its the americn way, actually, no, strike that, its the
human way ;)
now, heres another reason. the Big 4 (yamaha, honda, suzuki, kawasaki) make these bikes as powerful, light, and twitchy as they do because World Superbike and AMA SUperbike (where this bike is going to end up racing) will only let you change so much on the bike. For the 2004 rules (as they sit now, they keep being changed) they wont allow you to alter valve mater, cams, cranks, springs, etc..
basically the manufacturers are going a little more apeshit with floormodels now than they did say 10 years ago because now that they are allowing inline 4 litre bikes to race against V-twin litre bikes (used to be V-twin litre bikes against 750 I-4's) they will not allow as much work to be done to the I-4's, they are trying to make it more of an even playing field for all....
now, lastly, that particular bike is NOT MEANT to be used at its full potential on the street, simply put, you can't. the manufacturers have caught on to the fact that a FRACTION of the bikes they are going to sell will be used at full potential, and as such, have sacrificed a lot of reliabiliy (if you run the piss out of it the way you would a 600) on this last generation of litre bikes...
they now rev to 14k because they know that no one has the balls to do that for more than a few seconds every once in a while....
lastly, there are people who can use up all those bikes potential, not many of them, and certainly not me... at least not yet ;)
but when its done, even when done on the street, it is an amazing thing to see :D
