'05 VW Phaeton R60

Volkswagen is testing a 600-hp Bentley-powered Phaeton, and sources tell us they are getting ready to launch the most powerful “people's car” in its history.

Bernd Pischetsrieder has rubber‑stamped plans for the Phaeton R, which could see it going head‑to‑head with the future Mercedes 612-hp S63 AMG. Volkswagen’s secret weapon will be under the hood: the Bentley Continental GT’s twin‑turbo 6.0‑liter W12 engine.

The W12 produces 552 hp in the two‑door Bentley. However, Volkswagen is hoping to liberate even more grunt in a bid to match the 6.0‑liter V-12 S‑Class, which could run the 0‑60 sprint in less than five seconds.

Nothing is yet official, but sources at VW’s Braunschweig engine development center hint that 600 hp is easily accessible through a moderate increase in turbocharger boost pressure.

This muscular prototype – spied undergoing driveline tests in the Alps – is testing the W12. Giant air ducts are needed up front to increase air flow to the intercooler and its associated plumbing.

The four‑wheel‑drive Phaeton will be the company's flagship racing model. The hot Phaeton will be badged R60. Expect a price tag of over $150,000 when and if the R60 reaches dealerships in the U.S.

... I wouldn't mind one but there is a lot of shit that I would buy for 150k before this car.

If they don't pull the plug on the Phaeton project before that. The thing doesn't sell.

When will the Skoda Octavia version be coming out for half the price?

Thats the thing with the whole VW range - you get the same basic chassic, engine and overall engineering in Skodas, Seats, VW and Audis. You can get a Skoda Octavia RS with pretty much the same performance as the Audi TT for 15k less.

The big question in who would pay 150k for a VW. Wouldn't this be better off as an Audi RS8. Personally I think the Phaeton cuts too much into VW's Audi A6 and even A8 (the low end A8s) buisness already.

Actually, the way I see it, the Phaeton is going to cut into the A8/A8L line in a big way. VW is touting the Phaeton as a 7-series and S-Class level of car. Looking at the features, options, and interior, I'd say that's about right. But, trying to undercut BMW (the industry benchmark) and Mercedes-Benz by up to $50,000? Not in this lifetime. It's weird, that at least from what I've seen, it's got more equipment than the A8L does, yet costs the same. What gives here? Plus, there's the whole VW build quality thing. These cars are going to be in the shop more than they're on the road at the rate VW is going.
I was hoping the Touareg/Phaeton would mark a turning point in that area for the company. We've got a Touareg that wouldn't start upon delivery...to the customer, and it's been in the shop for the last week now, for what problems, I don't know. Doesn't bode well, though.

Nobody who can afford to spend 150k on a car is going to buy a VW, regardless of what motor they slap inside it.

I agree, the motor would be much better suited in an S8's engine bay. And despite the slight power advantage, I'm willing to bet it'll still get walked by an E55.

I own 3 VW's a '71 super beetle for the ole lady, and 2 jetta's for the kids so i kinda keep up with VW stuff.

My works keeps me running quite a bit, one day i was on the interstate here in Florida, and i was in a hurry so i was speeding a little and in the 30 minutes i passed 3 of these phaetons going the same direction as me. I spent a lettle time at each one checking it out because it was the largest VW i had ever seen. All that could be seen of the drivers was their head. I thought that the styling was clean and sharp but only 1 of them had a name badge on it. Once i got home i did an internet search and found out that they will be here in the US soon enough. All in all if someone would offer me one i would take it for sure.

Are you sure that's the right picture of the Phaeton? I thought the Phaeton was suppose to be VW's break-in to the exotic sports car class? 600hp with a 150k pricetag? Sounds more like an exotic sports car then a luxury car.

hmm.... Take a look at its price tag and its competitors. It will never sell looking like that. The market its aimed at, its need to look much more luxorious and lose that "sporty" front end. it looks way out of place on a 150k luxory mobile.

Now, for 150K, you could go with a Mercedes C32 or S600 and pump up the engine. Why would anyone put that kind of cash into a Passat? Hell, even an Audi SR6 has the possibility of gettiing up to 600+ hp with the right work.

From what i know they used two of Volkswagen's narrow angle V6 engines (vr6), which have a 'V' of 15 degrees and placing them together in a 'V' of 72 degrees thus making it unusually compact for an engine of this size.

I know little about cars, but I like to try, so please don't consider me stupid, yet. But from what I understood from HowStuffWorks the crank just... 'connects' to the transmission and then down to the driving axle, in a very simplified way of speaking. I'm a little confused on how it is actually connected, but that's a question for another day.

Anyway, how do two seperate cranks work? Do they have gears on the end that connect to the same transmission 'rod' somehow?

Ah, found the answer on my own. Here's some help, if anyone else is as dumb as me. Info Near Bottom

I guess they all connect to the same crank, in one very complicated way. I thought it was more of an actual W shape.

Phew! Glad I'm not a VW mechanic!
