Actually, the way I see it, the Phaeton is going to cut into the A8/A8L line in a big way. VW is touting the Phaeton as a 7-series and S-Class level of car. Looking at the features, options, and interior, I'd say that's about right. But, trying to undercut BMW (the industry benchmark) and Mercedes-Benz by up to $50,000? Not in this lifetime. It's weird, that at least from what I've seen, it's got more equipment than the A8L does, yet costs the same. What gives here? Plus, there's the whole VW build quality thing. These cars are going to be in the shop more than they're on the road at the rate VW is going.
I was hoping the Touareg/Phaeton would mark a turning point in that area for the company. We've got a Touareg that wouldn't start upon delivery...to the customer, and it's been in the shop for the last week now, for what problems, I don't know. Doesn't bode well, though.
