Dehydrated

Apparently through blood analysis I am severely dehydrated. My blood should be 50% water and it's more like a third. In other words my blood is thick, so thick my dad had to run it a few times for it to read. As a result I feel like I'm dying. I've had painful headaches for the past 3 or 4 days in a row including today, had stomach cramping(and other stomach problems), my energy is pretty shot almost non existant. I feel tired and weak, my appetite has decreased. Drink water! Sleep normal hours and eat good food! I hope my case isn't too serious...I think I really should be on Intravenous fluids but I'm not insured because I'm not in school anymore...thats a whole nother story all together. I dunno how long this shit is gonna last it's already been about 3 or 4 days straight and I really hate this. Wish there was some other way to fight this...if it weren't for the headaches I'd feel a lot better and be willing to get up and go places Boy oh boy don't let this shit happen to you. If I don't get any better soon I'll have no choice but to see a doctor...then I'll get a fat bill.

Asta!!

You probably really should see a Doctor, but I understand your reluctance...
Drink lots and rest, hopefully you can fix yourself back up!

Were you sick leading up to this? and how'd your dad come to do blood analysis on you, without taking you to the doctor?

What about Gatorade or other drinks that are supposed to replenish you?

I've been drinking gatorade and water like crazy now. But it's also making me pee a lot, and I'm peeing out the fluids that I need to be keeping in. Which is why IV's are ideal because it goes straight to my blood. I can't sleep because that won't help me either I don't think. I can't remember if I was sick leading up to this...I don't think I was all I know is I'm in really bad shape now. My dad is a Medical Technologist. Basically what he does is look at ALL bodily fluids (Blood, urine, feces, saliva, sweat, etc.) under a microscope and analyses them and provides a diagnosis. So the other day when we picked him up from work we decided he should draw my blood and it's a good thing he did otherwise I would have never known about this and it could have gotten REALLY serious. So yeah I'm in really bad shape and DO NOT let this happen to you. Drink water regularly, when you're thirsty that is, and eat healthy as well. Boy this is gonna be a hard one for me if I get over this....Me and cola heart each other very much .

I'm guessing that the test your dad ran is a hematocrit.........it measures the ratio of solid components (red blood cells) to total blood volume.

If your hematocrit is that high and you had no obvious[/I] illness prior to having your blood drawn, then something else is seriously wrong. You would need to have tremendous diarrhea or vomiting, with minimal intake, to get your blood that concentrated.

You may have a serious but treatable condition involving your kidneys and/or bone marrow. I would urge you to get medical attention immediately. If your hematocrit really is that high you are at tremendous risk for having a heart attack or stroke. The consequences of that could effect your whole life. Don't save a little money now and pay for it the rest of your life.

I had VERY mild, slight even, like 2 or 3 loads tops of Diahrea before he drew my blood, and today this seems to have increased some. But it's not so serious that I have to spend the whole day on the john it's just when I have to go..it comes out that way. I think I'm gonna get my blood drawn again tonight to see if it's changed. I have the readings from my results.

My H&H is 18.4 and 53.2
WBC is 7.3
RBC is 6.56

All my chemistry results are apparently normal. I have more red blood cells than I need though. I don't know what any of this means though so I trust that my parents do. I don't see how this stuff can cause such bad headaches like I have but I read migranes are associated with diarrhea which I kinda have so I figure thats what it must be.

It's a hemoglobin & hematocrit and mine were way above the normal ranges.

The normal is 14.0 to 18.0

The new test I just took shows improvement and it also shows that I actually was fighting off some form of bacterial infection. Pops thought it could be Mono but it wasn't though we don't know exactly what it is I'm fighting off. Now

H&H is 16.0 and 48.5
WBC is 5.5
RBC is 5.95

Still above normal on all of them but definitely showing signs of improvement. Just got some advil migraine hopefully that e'll kill the farkin headaches! Eh wish me luck I'm almost there!

the headache is probably a result of dehydration...

if you don't have insurance, are there any clinics you can go to, or the emergency room?

Your WBC count looks fine. Nothing to suggest a bacterial infection there. Your hematocrit is on the higher side, but entirely within the normal limits at my hospital (normal hematocrit 41-53). In people who have elevated 'crits, there are often very normal reasons for them to be elevated. For example, smokers often have elevated hematocrits. Without geeking out too much, your red blood cells (RBC's) carry oxygen. We usually measure RBC's kind of indirectly by measuring hematocrit and hemoglobin. If you are a smoker, you will often be replacing some of that oxygen that you inhale with tobacco smoke. Your body compensates by increasing the number of RBC's available to carry oxygen.

Looking at your lab panel you've listed, it doesn't really support you being significantly dehydrated. Your chemistry panel is much more useful in helping determine if someone is dehydrated.

If you have been having a lot of diarrhea and vomiting, you can get dehydrated, but it doesn't sound like you've had much of that. Looking at the numbers you've posted, I really don't see too much that jumps out at me as being abnormal. BUT, if you are feeling unwell, go to a doctor!

Yeah, one of the bigger problems with people getting dehydrated is from diarrhea and vomiting. It's always good to just never get thirsty. Being up at school and being incredibly lazy led me some days to not drink much water, then the next day I'd have the worst headache of my life. But even if I tried to drink a ton of water, most of it wouldn't even get absorbed - being that it's a ridiculously slow process by this point. So I make sure that I have at least a gallon of water a day, and have been in great shape since.

Anyhows, hope you feel better soon. Sounds like something I would never want to have happen to me.

I'm actually feeling a whole lot better since about yesterday. For some reason I couldn't get on yesterday. But as of today I'm doing pretty well. For the most part I don't think I'm dehydrated anymore but whatever my stomach was fighting off may very well still be being fought. But I have no pain so far and hopefully the rest of the day will have me back to normal as well. I think I'm gonna go have a bowl of serial or something. I hope we have milk .

Asta!!

edit: And ugh no I'm not a smoker, I haven't really touched any drug since birth. No philosophical reason behind it I guess. I just never really felt the need to .

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the vast majority of Americans are chronically dehydrated, like 75 percent...

Also that most of the time when we think we're hungry, we're really just thirsty.

8-10 glasses a day!
