Health Insurance Question

My wife is losing her sight and I want her on my insurance.
Will Insurance companies put her on my plan even if she has a disability?

She had insurance on our family thru her work when she was working.

She is no longer working and I need to put the family on my plan. will I have problems?

No. If your insurance is through your employer, they can not discriminate.
Sorry to hear about your wife. Hope all turns out OK.

Could depend on semantics. Is she losing her sight, because she getting older or is there a specific reason. The key-words to insurance companies are "pre-existing condition". Most allow a vision plan out-right (if they carry it) to cover the cost of eye exams and glasses (sometimes contacts).
You need to speak to someone w/the insurance company (or HR) about the specifics of your situation. Insurance companies are in the business to make money. They do not have to insure everyone who asks.

In Maryland every insurer has the right to decline coverage for pre-existing conditions...except for one. Blue Cross/Blue Shield. Called "carefirst" in Maryland.

BlueCross/BlueShield accepted this repsonsibility imposed on them as a result of them accepting certain governement insurance needs, and them becoming the Heath Insurer of Last Resort.

I would imagine it is different in every state.

I think it is definately possible for insurers to refuse pre-existing conditions. I suspect that most states have an insurer of last result. (that doesn't mean it will be affordable).

Sorry to hear about your missus' peepers by the way. Best of luck to you both.

In the September issue of Fitness magazine, I'm home on Friday night, i can quote it exactly then, it had a bit on pre-existing conditions and a person can no longer be denied coverage because of them- if I remember the article correectly (and had a Department of Labor website reference...)

I thought of another question after thinking about william's comment on semantics. Has the missus been diagnosed with a degenerative eye condition, that was treated by an insurance plan before? Or does she just know her eyes are failing? Important distinctions.

Certainly alot going through your mind, I'm sure. Hoping for the best for you.
