Tipping

We all, from time to time, venture out into the restuarant world. Most of the time we get a waiter or waitress who does an adaquate job of serving us food and basically leaving us alone for discussion or whatever. For this, we are forced by a societal pressures to give more money to the server than what the bill indicates. This is called tipping. Tipping is a basic sign of appreciation of service and respect. But what if one was treated without respect and his or her attendance at the restuarant was not appreciated? Should the patron still feel the need to give a set percentage even though he or she does not feel the need to tip for less than adequate service? This was my dilemma last night here in Scottsdale.
My friend and I arrived at Carlsbad Tavern last night and were promptly seated at 6pm. It took nearly twenty minutes to be served and another ten minutes to receive our beers. So, that's a total of 30 minutes just to get a drink. It then took another 30 minutes to receive our cheeseburgers which appeared to have been sitting under a hot lamp for an extended period of time. Now, I realize that it is a Saturday night and the bar was quite
busy but shouldn't we feel like we're being cared for in all the chaos? The waiter offered no explanation or excuse for such a long delay for sub-par food. After eating, we sat at our tables looking at the empty plates for another half hour. All total, it took us an hour and a half to get our over-priced and to leave for another establishment.
What would all of you do in this situation? Leave the normal tip for a meal (which for me is 20 percent)? Or, would you leave something significantly less or nothing at all? I left the 20 percent to avoid a scene with the waiter. But after leaving, I really regretted doing so. This magic number of 20 percent and the sub-culture of waiters/waitresses seems to have instilled a great fear in me and many of my friends. I mean, no one wants their food tampered with the next time so we basically pay 20 percent of the bill in order to save the next guy.

What do you all think of tipping?

I have no problem tipping if the service was good. And I REALLY have no problem NOT tipping if the service sucked outright (and the person doesn't even try to apologize).

I don't feel tipping is always necessary. You don't owe them a damned thing...it's ridiculous for an employee to think that you do. In most cases I think a waiter/waitress would already know if something has gone wrong, and will know what to change with the next people to get good tips.

As you mentioned it's really supposed to be a token of your appreciation when you *do* give them a tip.
