What kind of wine is good/sweet ?

I want a sweet wine, i heard white wine is alittle bit sweeter then red wine. I want to play it out like it's a romantic movie. I know it's lame. But women love that bullshit. So if i can nail the wine, i can maybe hit it. Oh yeah, it's gotta be CHEAP. I want a sweet wine because i know alot of women like sweet/fruity type of drinks.

Oh, man... I don't have enough time in this lifetime to address everything that's wrong with this post.

There are dozens of types of wines, both red and white. There are sweet reds and dry whites. And none of them are going to be sweet the way a soft drink or grape juice are sweet.

I'm more of a beer guy, but I do I like pinot grigio (which is white) because it's dry but light at the same time. It's very refreshing.

Cheap wine usually tastes ... well, cheap. I'm not saying that some cheap wines aren't good, but you do get what you pay for at a certain level. Besides, how do we know what's cheap for you? When I was in my twenties I figured that $6-10 was cheap. Now, I'm more of a $25-30 is cheap kind of guy. I've been known to spend more.

FYI - Some women/chicks don't like sweet wine. My wife (who is a chick) doesn't like sweet wine at all. Except for dessert wine ... but that's hardly cheap (can be in the hundreds - but worth it if the chick is really, really hot like my wife.)

You don't have to spend a lot of money to get a good wine, and if a woman is a wine drinker, chances are, she won't be drinking a sweet wine.

Pinot Noir is a nice red, it's not as robust as a burgandy or a cabernet, I prefer it. If you want to impress college girls get a Merlot, but no one over the age of 21 with any taste will be impressed by it.

Pinot Grigios are nice whites.. crisp and refreshing for summer, and not heavy and oakey like Chardonneys are.

Go to the wine store... and tell a person who works there how much you want to spend (and under 15 dollars a bottle will get you very good stuff, under 10 will get you a good bottle) and what you are planning on serving it with.

you don't need to spend a lot to get a good bottle - 25 - 30 is ridiculously overpriced... Food and WIne magazine every month lists a bunch of bottles in the 10 -15 dollar range that are quite good...

Go get a bottle of liebfraumilch. Cheap, sweet German white wine. Pretty cheap and pretty sweet -- not great quality, but drinkable, especially by people who aren't used to wine. You can get it at discount liquor marts, Trader Joe's, probably even your supermarket.

Maybe you've heard of Blue Nun wine -- they used to advertise a lot in the states. That's a liebfraumilch. But most of what you find is labeled by German vintners, and is prominently labeled liebfraumilch. Which translates to "milk of our blessed mother," by the way. Don't think about it too hard :-).

Anyway, if neither of you is too sophisticated about wine, it should do the job.

I'd go for a Sauvignon Blanc (mostly because *I* like it). Not too chilled and has to be from the right region (Marlborough in NZ would be my preference...).

You can get these from around $12 Oz dollars and up.

By whose standards is a wine ridiculously over-priced? By mine $25-30 ... is not; it really depends on what I'm in the mood for. My favorite wines are Valpolicella (not the Chianti tasting crap that they serve in restaurants). Magazines like Food & Wine tend to the cheaper stuff because of their reader base; the average person would not buy a wine magazine if it only contained wines that no one can afford.

Merlot has gotten a bad rap ... there are some really good Merlots out there. The line about "no one over 21 would be impressed" sounds like something from a movie called "Sideways." A <i>good</i> Merlot would impress most people. However, Merlot is not usually sweet, so it wouldn't fit with what the poster is looking for.

White Merlot is sometimes sweet though a good one is not cheap. There are cheap ones out there ... so maybe go for that. White Merlot - it's different enough that it might be kind of cool.

If you really want sweet go for fruit wines or nectar wines. Peach wine if you can find it can be good.

Or just make Amaretto Sours and forget the whole wine thing.

I also think you should ask her what kind of wine she likes first. Just ask her if she likes dry or sweet. That may help you make the right choice. Then you stand more of a chance of "hitting it".

Anyways, my vote is white zinfandel served ice cold. I'm not a real big wine fan but I do like that stuff. Though it's really debatable if it's a wine at all.

Blue Nun or Peter Brum should do the trick, both are whites and about 8 a bottle, in my college years i used to keep a bottle in my car with a pair of cups. It brings so many really good memories!!!! Serve it chilled in nice cups, to the day, those are the bottles we drink in large reunions and when the ladies want to get a little bit drunk.

Willamette Valley Vineyards sells a wine called Oregon Blossom. It's similar to white zinfandel. It's about $8 in Oregon, probably more elsewhere. I've found it in other states. It's definitely a sweet wine.

The US wine makers are allowed to put sugar water in their wine as well as seperating the components unlike their european counterparts, so you should be able to find something sweet and cheap (correct me if I'm wrong about this). The european laws lead to higher quality wine but also led to the infamous anti-freeze laced wine scandal.

Just go to the shop and ask for some advice or purchase a reasonably priced wine (not the cheapest but don't go overboard).

LLL2, about how old are you and the random hittable chick? Back when I was in college, the wine of choice seemed to be Beringer's White Zinfandel. I don't think you can get sweeter/fruitier than that; it's essentially a wine cooler without the carbonation.

that's definately the inexpensive white wine for folks that don't really drink wine. reminds me of the chick drinking meter - and a white zin drinker was "easy." someone know where to find one of those charts for this guy??

if you want something with a little class that is sweet, look for bernkastler reislings or even a piesporter (spelling on all these). they pick the grapes much later when the sugar has developed more. some of the better, more expensice desert-type wins even have sugar crystal attached to the cork! but those are the more pricey ones.

Montevina Wines Zinfandel from Amador County 2004 Link

Check out the links for more details, but in short - cheap and sweet. Notes of ... well, hell. It's white zin. We call it Kool Aid at work. Should be less than $15 for a bottle.

Secondly, a Riesling is great for summer when it's hot outside. I like this more than the first recomendation, but its not as sweet and fruit forward. Saint M 2004 Riesling This should be cheap also - less than $15. Wine.com link

If you would like to try something different and not very sweet, try Conundrum. It's made by Caymus who consitantly put out great wine. A full bodied, impressive white. Complex with alyers of citrus, melon, subtle hints of oak. It's more "expensive." It's around $20.

LLL2, presentation is everything. You can thrifty and buy jug wine and put it a carafe or decanter to impress your lady. A friend of mine does this and works very well.

Don't be intimidated by wine or wine snobs. It's a great world to explore. Sip and reflect, "Ahh, a subtle hint of grape!"

That said, you can also try some of the savignon blancs. The ones from South Africa are fairly crisp with a sweet aftertaste. My current favorite is Mount Nelson, and I can get it for about $15 a bottle in downtown Chicago. It comes in a screwtop, but cork is so godawfully expensive these days that the technology to preserve the wine (at least the young whites) is good enough that it doesn't matter. Serve it ice cold preferably on a hot day.

There are also a bunch of desert wines (reislings, etc.) that are sweet and really good. Most of the good ones are German, but there are bunch of Oregon ones that are really good.

It would really help to know what you're going to serve with it to make sure that the wine compliments the food since that's the whole point of wine.

A good sweet wine requires a measure of balance. I like 1994 Domaine de Coyeaux Muscat de Beaumes de Venise. It's french, it's sweet as sugar (flavored like roasted pecans, cashews, and almonds; candied orange and wild berry syrup; and buttered and maple-coated waffles), and it's damn good with dessert; espically creamy desserts.

Actually a lot of winemakers are using screw tops now. It has become less of a stigma as it once was. It actually preserves a wine better than cork and it is cheaper. As well as being easier to open

I used to go to a local wine store, and tell the owner what I was making for dinner and asked what she would suggest under a certain price range. We'd walk around the store, and she would grab a bottle here and there, it's when she would pick up a bottle, kind of hug it and say "Oh I love this" than I would say "I want that". That's how I found Evolution 9. It's not super sweet, but it's definitely smooth, and after that it all comes down to presentation.

For red- try either Red Diamond or Los Vascos- both pretty deep & rich, but Los Vascos is sweeter and has less bite to it- a lot more smooth.

Best wines to get that are reasonably priced....go to a winery. Not only will you get some advice, but the wine is usually better.In fact....(just had a little brain storm), take the girlfriend to a winery as a date! You both get to taste wines, there's other things to do sometimes, like tours and gourmet food shops and you will get exactly what she likes.

It comes in a tall dark brown bottle. You will love this wine as well. it is just sweet enough that you will want that second glass. I will have to say that I had some of this last weekend, and I have discovered something. It was my birthdat on 1-30 and on the 29th we had the cake and the wine. Dont drink wine with cake ok. JUST dont do it. I was not liking the way i was feeling. There is something about the sweetness of the cake and then the wine just dont mix. I will never do that again. Goes great with pasta, and steak. even french fries, but not cake LOL
Here in the northeastern US it cost between 9 and 12 bucks, not an expensive wine, thank god. just think if it cost between 50 and 200, if ya didnt like it then look at the money you lost,its not like you can put the cork back in, head back to the store and say "when I got it home my girl said"" looks like you got the wrong wine"" that you need a different one. You can spend all your time looking for the right wine, but why not take my advice I've had it way more than twice.

Despite everything that's wrong with this thread I'll add my suggestions.

I love Saint M Riesling. Great suggestion. One thing to keep in mind is that not all rieslings are sweet. Saint M is a sweet one, Pacific Rim has a sweet riesling as well.

Another great sweet type of wine is moscato. They are sometimes bubbly, like champagne but sweet. Moscatos make great dessert wines.

Barefoot has a new Moscato champagne that is under $10 a bottle and pretty decent if you want to go the champagne route. I don't remember the exact name at the moment.

Oh and have wine glasses if you don't have them. Drinking wine out of red cups isn't very romantic. You'd be surprised how often this is overlooked.

You should really probably ask your date what she likes in terms of wine. In my experience, not all women prefer cheap wine, nor necessarily white wine.

Also, no matter what your date prefers, do NOT go cheap on wine. Cheap wine is one of the worst beverages ever. You don't have to lay out forty or fifty bucks for a bottle, but if you're spending less than fifteen or twenty, the odds are not in your favor for getting anything drinkable. Any woman with an ounce of palate will be infinitely gladder to have a very good wine that is a little drier or a little sweeter than she usually prefers, or red instead of white, or vice-versa, than a very bad wine of the sweetness or color she usually favors.

If you do end up going for sweeter wines, my recommendations are:

White: Gewurtztramminer (from Alsace, ideally, but Germany or South Africa also produce nice Gewurtztramminers), Riesling (German, Alsatian, South African, sometimes Australian or New Zealander), Semillon or Sauternes (French or Australian, NZ if you can find it is also good), or maybe a young Sauvignon Blanc.

Red/Rose: a good young Zinfandel will be an excellent choice if you're going for a sweeter red or rose. Beaujolais, if you can find a good one, are really lovely semi-dry wines. And on the more medium-bodied part of the spectrum, a nice Chianti is always a pleasant drink, and good with a wide variety of entrees.

I don't know where you live, but if you have Trader Joe's stores in your area, they often have very decent wines for extremely reasonable prices-- sometimes you can even find a good bottle for nine or ten dollars (although don't be fooled-- the wine they sell for three, four, five, or six dollars is just as bad as anywhere else). Otherwise, Whole Foods often has very good wines, and any good specialty wine and liquor store (not just some corner liquor store, but a real, quality wine shop) should be able to help you pick out a nice wine that isn't too far out of your price range.
